24 HOURS IN BANGKOK Hidden Bangkok Tours + Khao San Road revisit

Show Video

okay so I've just landed in Bangkok one my way from Taiwan to the UK and I've got 24 hours here in the city now I've been here a few times before so what I got planned today is to do some new things like I'm going to go on this really cool hidden Bangkok boat tour which should be great going to revisit some old favorites just for my own Nostalgia sake hopefully going to have some amazing food going to meet with some friends including my good mate Patty but also last time I was here was January 22 when it was like just coming out the pandemic was like the PNR time it's the whole test and go thing so it's going be interesting to see what it's like being back here now everything's properly open so yeah lots to do in a short space of time so let's get to it first up I need to get some cash out to pay for my train ticket into town because the ticket machines and a ticket office don't take Card all of it is cash only but only the uh ticket stands rather the machines can use mil to G 100 so yeah you got to get cash out if you want to the train yeah the great thing with the express train is obviously you skip all the traffic and it only takes 20 minutes to get into the center of the city so just changing from the airport express to the Metro One Stop let's get ass when I'm stay all right I've made it to my hotel I'm staying at the coach hotel which is in asog suum vit area now from when we landed and the seat belt sign came off to arriving here took an hour and 50 minutes so on paper it seems fast but all those little bits add up and there's like the queuing for tickets and all walking from one place to another all those bits and pieces so it still took nearly 2 hours to do all of that but anyway I've D my bags in the room I'm going to enjoy the hotel a bit tomorrow morning have a bit of a lazy morning by the pool but for now let's get exploring I'm staying in sukumvit which is the modern Hub of Bangkok with skyscrape luxury hotels restaurants shopping malls rooftop bars nightclubs there's loads going on here but today I'm going to be exploring the older part of Bangkok starting with a quick stop in Chinatown to get some food look who I met up with it's Patty Doyle how you doing buddy good to see you again very good to see you welcome back to Thailand yes good to be back with thing everything open and normal and not tests every two seconds and stuff like last time I was yeah that was a weird time very weird time made for a fun film though but very weird at the time uh where have you taking us to First anyway I just thought I would give you a little insight into some local street food this lady here she's here four or five times a week she gets all of her seafood and ingredients delivered fresh from the coast and she cooks a bunch of curries um but you've got to get here early and we've come a bit late so she's only got about five or six dishes um I've ordered for you I think you're going to get the same Canam Jean which is a really famous Southern Thailand Curry basically with noodles really yummy and uh it's super cheap and it's super local and when it's gone it's gone and where are we in Frank we are just in Chinatown Chinatown yeah so all this whole area is Chinatown right you saying it's it's the Venice yeah I haven't taken to the most scenic part of Bangkok they are live or it's sunbathing right okay this was not used for the food here but yeah all right let's [Music] try oh that is amazing it's like a really oh that's a spice it's like a really good green curry spice C the back in my throat but it is fantastic delicious just tasting this made me glad that I've done this stop off in Bankok this is so tasty one best meals I've had in a while but it's very spicy I get the max level of spice I can enjoy I think but it's so good bye see you later hey guys just thought I'd quickly jump in here whil you're see me spending money on trains and hotels and street food and talk to you about travel money because I often get asked what cards do I use abroad to save on fees with payments and cash withdrawals and what I've been using is actually this week's sponsor which is curve now I've used other CS in the past like monzo and revolute that save you on the fees but these are actual bank accounts that you need to load with your money whilst with curve you don't need to do that because curve connects your existing debit and credit cards into one so it's the only card that you ever need to carry so you can pay with curve but tell it to take money from this debit card or that credit card but you don't pay any of the international fees associated with those original cards and they can often charge you up to 3% in fees so curve can save you quite a lot not only that you can use the go back in time feature to move payments from one card to another so let's say you've paid with curve but it was linked to your personal account but you meant to spend it with the business account or you wanted to free up some cash so you wanted to move from your debit card to your credit card with curve you can go back and move that payment from one to another without incurring any fees also if you sign up to curve pay X you can get up to £300 worth of fee-free foreign ATM withdrawals so with great exchange rates rewards and insights across your accounts you don't need to move Banks to improve them all you need is curve so sign up to curve using the link in the description and start saving loads of money on fees when you're traveling right let's get back to Bangkok bye see you later we've just been dropped off by this amazing Temple I'm not quite sure the name of where we are but we're about to do this hidden Bangkok boat tour uh where you can just sit on this boat and just cruise around like the back canals and just sort of see lots of really cool stuff so that's what we're doing for the next couple of hours [Music] so they got a little restaurant here and a fridge full of drinks so you can just stock up for the boat journey and take them around as you cruise around the uh B canals of Bangkok I'm excited for this though like uh Patty and I nearly did this at the end of our Thailand trip last time but I was just too knacked by the end of it to do anything interesting at all uh but this should be good fun leave the way buddy leave the way all right you got your live jackets on yeah first of all like to introduce you guys to the boat driver her name is St hey been ding this for more than 10 years wow I know even she look only 17 years right she didn't start to drive when she's 7even years old she's actually this is her daughter her daughter is okay anyway so um right in front of you guys like these houses back in 1960 this guy were rich people the reason why I said this because back then boat was the main transportation so the financial district is on the other side this is more like the local people where the local people live okay yeah this is like the history of Bangkok okay let's Cru back to Bangkok 1960 let's go okay [Music] come if you look around here it's very fra there's no skyscapers out here because no one want to come and invest here because everybody wanted invest and then they build skyscapers so pros and cons good thing is when the when the temple own the land like this restaurant the The Temple at entrance own the land the other side the another Temple own the land in this old waterways you guys will see so many um abandoned houses and almost like collapsed and some of the house collapsed too okay that because my generation and younger no one want to live in this kind of houses anymore because they cannot park their own car and scooter inside let's say if you're 35 years old you have been working for 10 years you have saving money you're not going to spend this money to renovate houses because it's not your own [Music] [Applause] land so yeah we got a we got a cool box full of drinks and then we have we have uh cup holders of the minimum back then like my grandmar said when she was young she showered here because we didn't have um tap water until [Music] 1970s right in front of the doorstep like right in front of the [Music] entrance this is such a cool way to see a different side of the city you know I was gutted when I was here in January 22 for my tour uh we did this back street bike tour which I didn't get to do cuz I was uh waiting for my PCR test so this kind of makes up for it especially I'm an arm do explain everything that one that building is used to be the [Music] school I've never seen that before got a monor right here just sitting on top of the rock look at that it looks so uncomfortable yeah he's just he's just up there going I regret this it almost looks like he was impaled like it looked like it was just like [Music] maybe make a right turn going straight over there on Saturday and Sunday you guys can you guys can go in the morning you can go to the froing market yeah just done a quick stop on the canal trip got a little shop selling all the pack of star kits Like Elephant pants and things like that this is great though going on a little boat trip like this you get to see a completely different side of Bangkok so this is the artist village that we stopped [Music] at car watching [Music] fans see got lots of things here like stores where we can make bracelets can do different bits and pieces of Art about yourself yeah poy so the whole bridge is like covered in Old pots like teaps stuff it's for it's a you chew it yeah and it it's like gives you like a speed high it's like a drug [Music] yeah see all the catfish down here in the river apparently no one wants to eat these catfish cuz they live off the stuff in the canal which isn't ice that means it don't taste good so they just stay there forever and get left alone and but look it's not just one or two it's like hundreds me water get away from my so all right back to the boat guys let's go back to the boat let's [Music] go so behind us is the amazing giant gold Buddha statue covered in scaffolding but it's going to finish in in January January all right in January it's going to finish cool so yeah if you see this and you're coming from January 25 uh it'll be open again there's a smaller one here though this is still pretty cool [Music] [Applause] go we've got a solitary monkey buy bars over [Music] here yeah I haven't even been introduced it to we got will and Jose here from Chicago hey guys how you doing good how are you good good tell us about your channel promote promote yourself all right Channel you know what go to this one okay all right uh our channel is probably nomatic uh we are a couple just traveling the world and showing the beauty of the country through its culture its food and its experiences through our lenss what he said see that was good this is why I said go to him that's why I said it every word you said has been terrible but that was that L that's fair that's fair I'll just you know [Laughter] what no okay my name is okay cool yeah nothing was said there so yikes just all relevant information Yik totally [Music] irrelevant today is her birthday you want to sing her happy birth to you happy birthday we're heading up to lock here so we're going to go through this lock to get onto the main river and then uh get some good views of the temples lock locks where where that word comes from English language for you know boat going up and down so are you saying like British people are so genius yep genius sometimes less so these [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] [Music] days what a great into the trip look at that for all right guys please say thank you to the bo drivers thank you oh thank you so much thank you so much everyone C C thank you that was great so we're now going to get a Tuk Tok to Coan Road or near it he we're in to Tuk Tok [Music] way so yeah just before we head to Coan Road just ran a corner from it this the hotel we had to quarantine in for 10 days when we didn't have Co and it turns out that there's also a day five PCR test and not only that because we're traveling in a group if one person tests positive the entire group will have to quarantine one out of us came up positive now we find out what happens next but basically yeah we all now need to quarantine for 10 days having to quarantine for 10 days days when you don't have covid you're negative and you're triple jabbed and I've passed every test so far is the dumbest stupidest thing I could possibly imagine it's so so so stupid what a crazy weird time I was almost tempted to stay in there but I thought might just get PTSD but yeah this is we were sat out here that's the 7-Eleven We snuck our beers in from and this is the bar we used to go to so this bar here we were getting drinks and food from each evening whil we're stay at the hotel at the start of the tour then once we put in quarantine we could see the bar owner here just standing outside looking for customers there's no one around and we were stuck inside without Co thinking we could be spending money what a crazy time so we got some food and some drinks at that bar Just for Old Time sake and then we made our way down a couple streets towards coam road so we're about to head to a very rare spot in Bangkok and one ever check Hidden Gem called coam the reason we're going back to it in this short time here is cuz when I was here in January 22 coming out of Co it turned into a ghost town was dead having experienced it in 2013 when it was how you expect it to be it's like nearly 3 years later I'm just curious to see how it's rejuvenated what it's like is it like the old version is like a new version who knows but we'll find out very soon yeah First Impressions it seems quite classy almost there's like proper bars there's like food court area it's almost like a night market when was the last time you came here I never come here really maybe 6 months ago yeah yeah yeah I wasn't thinking like last week but I just say after 10: p.m. though it's very different all the food goes away it's just loud obnoxious music and everyone's drunk the real Cowan comes out but I'm surprised that what time is it now 73 it's like a Street Market it's like a night market quite nice good PRO Sound first big change is a year ago they've legalized Weeds now there like Cannabis shops everywhere not for me well you can smell the weed everywhere that's different it's back obviously in terms of what it was after lockdown it when it was a ghost town it's back The Vibes there it's busy the business is doing well but it seems like it's kind of upgraded a bit I I I I Vibe with Cal sanro now like I think they've got the balance right it's not too obnoxious they've got lots to see lots to look at lots of food options there's actually some nice places to eat nice place to get drinks there was fewer people offering ping pong shows and things like that so it felt a lot more bit more classy without losing some of its Edge as well so it's it's changed but you know the music hasn't been turned up to insane levels which I'm sure it will do in a few hours but 8:00 9:00 this is a really vibrant interesting place to come if you're on your holiday for sure and I'm definitely going to come back but it's good it's good I'm glad I'm glad is back anyway cuz it' just be a shame if it just died during Co so anyway let's go get a drink give me give me me Patty went home and I stuck around crand Road a bit longer myself and once it got past like 9:00 it then became a lot more like the old coam road right it's 9:00 volume's gone up once it got to like 9 or 10:00 they turned the volume up not to not to 11 to like 1100 I'm know I'm going to sound super old like oh the music was loud but it was like deafening and then there was a usual trying to sell your scorpions to eat guys going around offering sex shows you know all that classy stuff 11 years later still the same [ __ ] twice as loud but I sat down in a bar and ended up chatting to some younger Backpackers and it was really great chatting to them they were lovely people you know and they were just starting out on their first backpacking trip but my god did I feel my age difference was talking to them I kind of felt like Bilbo talking to the young Hobbit regaling stories of his adventures you know when I was your age and I first went backpacking social media didn't even exist all right good morning from Bangkok today before I head to the airport I'm going to just relax by the pool for a bit and then go get some lunch for Patty finish off my time here BR up [Music] the most important thing to get when you're back in Thailand 71100 [Music] toast oh I missed you all right so just before I head to the airport come to get some lunch and Patty's taking me to a local place what are we doing Patty so this is my local spot since you're here I thought I'd take you it's very affordable very cheap very very local and it's not the most spectacular dish it's just alond guy which is rice with chicken and then it comes with a sweet Ginger sauce the rice is cooked in chicken carcass so it's really flavorful fragrant rice and it's just simple delicious and extremely cheap don't go wrong yummy it's great it's just like simple but effective like true Thai comfort food yeah Thai comfort food there you go yeah I was just saying it's it's kind of funny that just up one levels the super modern bit with the you know shopping malls and uh well patties patties p uh and you just come down the street level you got this little local place just tucked underneath there all right so that's been my 24 hours in Bangkok um kind of curious how this video is going to turn out actually cuz it's a bit different to the normal sort of long form documentaries that I make I just thought it' be fun to make little short video of my short time here um probably could have squeezed in more activities this morning if I wanted to but to be honest I'm just pretty knacked from just done the Taiwan trip then here so it's nice just relax the hotel pool and just get some lunch with Patty so but yeah I'm about to get my plane back to the UK I'm heading to the UK for a bit um for my friend size wedding if you saw the midnight trainer Georgia series that's high uh his wedding's coming up which is going to be amazing if you haven't seen a midnight trainer Georgia series stop what you do and watch it now cuz it's one of the favorite ones I've ever done seel com 2025 and speaking of weddings I'll probably be uploading a little edit of our wedding uh from the summer just be like a 10 15 minute kind of highlight thing it's not going to be like all the speeches and full all the ceremony full or anything like that just to give you give you a little flavor of the fun we had in that amazing day so and then also coming up soon will be the film from Taiwan the Taiwan trip I've just done and that'll just be that'll be a documentary and uh probably just be one episode probably like an hour long and then once that's done I'll get the Africa series finished as well so yeah that's what's coming up soon hope you enjoyed this little little Vlog I guess from Bangkok and thanks for watching as always and to all the new subscribers that recently joined thanks for signing up and if you want to sort of see what I normally get up to then check out the ultimate binge playlist where you can see all my documentaries in chronological order that will keep you busy for quite a while and there's loads more stuff coming soon so stay tuned cheers this [Music]
