This Goodwill Tech is WILD
- This is Goodwill Computer Works. So we've done a lot of videos trying stuff from Goodwill in the past, but always online. But today we're going to go to a dedicated Goodwill, which is entirely meant for computers, video games, and weird electronics.
Let's see what's inside. Okay, so that was hands down so much better than I thought, so much so, I have two full carts of stuff. Lemme bring all this stuff back to the studio and we'll take a closer look at the incredible stuff we found at Goodwill.
But man, so cool. So as you can see, I purchased a few things from Goodwill Computer Works. So why don't we start out with the thing that is probably the physically coolest, which is our old school cheese grater Mac Pro that I paid just 39.99 for. Alex, this is a 2008 Mac Pro I think. [Alex] Yes, 2008.
- Apparently it has a bad CD/DVD drive. How much do you think this would've cost back in 2008 for the dual CPU config? - [Alex] $2,800 MSRP. - So this was an expensive PC that I got for one 100th it's original price. It's probably about one 100th as useful.
I just working my way through it very carefully. I wouldn't wanna ruin some of the aluminum. This is so ridiculously overbuilt. What the hell? So you've got your little ATI graphics card inside, a massive motherboard, a Bluetooth card. So it's got four drive bays here.
It looks like only one of the hard drives is populated. Okay, that doesn't sound good. We've got ourselves an original Apple WD hard drive from May of 2008, a whopping 320 gigabytes. So these are our dual CPU coolers. So I'm assuming that this is one CPU and the second CPU underneath here.
Look, look at this, it's just a little guy. For this Mac Pro that we paid only 39.99, we got some friends (groans). So this is an old school Apple keyboard. It's got USB one, maybe even USB two, but it's the clear aesthetic, right? So you can see that it's got the clear plastic on it. So keep in mind that this is 2008, this would be a 2003 keyboard.
Now this one was listed as $8, and then I also have a mouse in here somewhere. We got ourselves a little baby Apple mouse. This is an M5769 model. This is the single click. For a while Mac OS is like two buttons on a mouse. That's too many.
I thought I was paying $8, but I guess it was on sale for four bucks. We have, actually from our previous Goodwill videos, a slightly older but still mostly period correct, cinema display, so this is the 20 inch. We tried this at a Goodwill episode last year and it is incredibly clean. So this is from 2004 I believe. So my thought with this guy is that it's a really cool piece of hardware, but I have some ideas. So the last time I took a look at one of these cheese grater Mac Pros is with the Matt Pro.
First generation, so this would've been 2008 I believe, that we got from Goodwill for 40 bucks. - [Matt] 40 Bucks, oh, just for the case alone. - [Austin] I know it's like worth $40 in like heft. We are running Mac OS Mavericks here. - Hello, and welcome.
- It plays, but I'll tell you, it's playing at 480p and dropping frames. But this was not designed to watch YouTube videos. This was designed to create cinema masterpieces.
I have captured in the cinema quality ProRes format that this Mac Pro loves, some 720p video. Hello my friends, this is a clip of 720p ProRes shot on an iPhone. I heard that back in the day, you were a bit of a Final Cut boy, - Yep. - Not Final Cut X,
no, no, no, seven. - Five. Actually I was, I started at six. - [Austin] Was that before or after color was invented? - Okay.
- [Austin] This is Final Cut 7. Which to be fair was legendary and people loved it. - Back when I was using this, we were using DV tapes. - Yeah, look, one of the options Edit Tape. - Tape, yep. - Contains unsupported media
or invalid directory structure. Ooh. And if you would like to cut your thesis shot on tape directly in Final Cut 7- - I did that - To pretend that you're Matt and your birthdate starts with an 1800. - Okay. Okay. - This was a great device. - [Matt] It didn't work.
- [Austin] You couldn't operate it. You weren't licensed for this. - [Matt] You didn't gimme the proper equipment. - Now when I saw a $15 JVC VHS camcorder, I was excited because not too long ago Ken did a video where he got a slightly more professional, but still old school Sony camcorder. So my thought, is that if I can get this up and running, I can get some absolutely sick vintage looking footage, but actually be able to work with it in a digital format. Good job, son.
Kick the ball harder. Clearly someone donated this camcorder, but without any of the battery, cable, anything like that. So there is a possibility that it doesn't work. But I will say it is in very good sort of physical condition.
- [Alex] My best guess is that this is from 2005. - 2005? People using VHS-C in 2005? Oh, we're up and running. Look at that. I'm trying to find out if there's actually something in here or not.
It sounds like it's spinning, but I dunno how to open the door. Let me see if I can figure out a way to mount Ken's monstrosity on here, and see if I can actually get this into the digital age. Behold my friends, Joanna's masterpiece. So what we've got here is the JVC, which is connected via an a series of arms to this USB-C battery and to our actual recorder, which is getting power, it's got microSD and it has AV. Yo, let's go! So this my friends, is the authentic old school experience. Look at the zoom on this guy.
Look at that. Zoom in, zoom in, zoom in. This is like if tech YouTube existed in 2005, like oh yes, this is my new Mac Pro. As you can see I paid 39.99 for it. It's got a 2.8 gigahertz Quad Core Processor. What's up bro? Ah, what is this thing? Ugh.
So I'll be exclusively shooting all my content now on a $15 camcorder that I bought from Goodwill. I dunno if it's gonna clear the battery, but we'll find out. Oh wow, that was aggressive, and it does have a tape in here.
Look at how tiny that little VHS-C tape is. That's adorable. Also, look at the internals of the camera, which work even while open. For $15, it is a look that you're not gonna find on any digital camera today. That is so sick.
So this is an Xbox One. Now I couldn't help but grab this one, not only because it was only 39.99, but also because this looks like it is a unopened console. I mostly say that because when I looked in the back, it still has the original seal.
This is built in 2016. This is not a complete Xbox One. It is literally the console and nothing else. So no power adapter, no controllers, short of a little bit of like scuffs and scratches, this thing is actually in like fairly good shape. eStarland charged like over $200 for an Xbox One like this. To go along with it, I got a bunch of games.
So we got ourselves Immortals, Phoenix Rising, which I think works on Xbox One, Need for Speed Unbound for $10, Dead Space for 15, actually just wanna play that remake. And most importantly, Shrek Forever After for Wii. All of these games are sealed and original. You can see that it has what I think is a Target sticker on it, right? So this was 59.99. It was marked down to $42 and then no one bought it, so they donated to Goodwill and I bought it for 4.99.
The only thing is these are only for Series X, but this is for Series X and Xbox One. One of the things that Joanna found, which is interesting, is this. This was essentially a screener of a bunch of different shows and movies and whatnot that were nominated or potentially nominated for some kind of award, I don't know what. Now what's cool about this is that this was given to people who are some of the who's who, and then they donate it to Goodwill for five bucks. Let me start by just making sure that the Xbox One functions. - [Alex] You know, fun fact, there are over 17,000 people that get to vote in the Emmys, so.
- Oh, so this is one of 17,000. - Yeah. - That's less cool. I'd drop it off at Goodwill too (laughs).
(Xbox pings) That's a great sign. Fan is spinning. There we go. - Hey. - Oh well, oh (laughs). - Wait, hold on a second. Now, that's not right. - So it's not updating, it's preparing.
Maybe they just reset it and then unplugged it before the reset was complete? - [Alex] Oh yeah, that does happen. - Patience, you may not know is my middle name. - Hmm. - Oh, oh. - Oh, no. - No, wait. Yeah, so it's got, it's basically, it's like booting into like recovery mode or something. - [Alex] Oh, hey oh.
- I don't know how I accidentally did that. I accidentally, I double pressed the button, but it let me in, okay. I wish I, you know what, I'm almost kinda curious in the edit what that frame was when I accidentally pressed the button. 'Cause I was trying to get the controller to pair and then I blasted through it. We're gonna download a bunch of updates and get this Xbox up and running and make sure, but I think we're okay. So while we wait for Xbox One to download very, very many gigabytes of updates to get up and running, let's try our copy of Shrek Forever After for the Wii, which is only $3.99.
Well... - What? Nevermind. - Yeah, you know what? I agree. I agree with you, I must say, I agree. Be right back. (cartoon running sound) (digital ping) You know, I ran, I don't think I needed to run. I forgot how slow the Wii is (laughs).
Hello Ken. - Hello. - You've come at the perfect time to play Shrek for Wii. - [Ken] Yo! - That's some gameplay.
That's some Wii high definition graphics right there. I'm Shrek and you're about to get Shreked my friends. - The world actually looks kind of nice. I'm not gonna lie. - For a Wii game, it's actually not too bad.
Let's change the, - Wait, she's not supposed to be here that early. - She looks like she's playing in World of Warcraft right now, okay. (copyrighted tune plays) Get donkeyed. Can I direct your attention to this beautiful deal we got? 40 bucks for an Xbox One. - Okay. - But while we wait for this to finish, since it's not done yet, we got you something.
It's on this side, I don't know. While we were there, it was a plethora of amazing items. But I got one thing that I think you'll appreciate. - Oh my god, it's a Watchman. - To my knowledge, I think it was like early nineties, but this is a little portable Sony TV, that also had radio and everything like that.
And Mega Bass. It will not be able to pick up any TV signals, right? That's all like 5G and stuff now. But theoretically, - All 5G. - [Austin] But it should work with radio, and I bet there's a way to get a video signal in there, 'cause it looks like there's a connector back here. - We're east of LA so we have to point west.
- It's, but, what? Okay, all right. That screen does look a little like, a little worse for wear. Oh. - To those authors who are feeling - There you go. You got it. (classical music) This is before copyright was invented, it's fine.
I'll be honest, I just got this 'cause I thought it was cool. I actually don't know if we're gonna do anything with it. It was like for what, 25 bucks or something? What does it say on the side? - It is 25 bucks. - Yeah, we got it
for 25 bucks. Have fun with this. I'm gonna try our Xbox One now, which seems like it actually is functional. We just did two whole segments of this video while we're waiting for the stupid Xbox to get up to date. Oh my god.
All right, I thought it was done. We'll be right back after I log in and finish setting up our Xbox. Also, here's Shrek for Wii (laughs). - [Ken] Did it just puke? - And so our Xbox seems to be functional. So it looks to me like download games and everything.
Like it seems like it's a completely ready to go Xbox. But my big question is really just with these older consoles, and I say older, it's not that old, is does the disc drive work? Let's watch Future Man. That seems generic and not good.
This is my favorite part of this generation, just waiting. (clock ticking) Non-commercial purposes, you cannot reproduce or loan or give away any viewing rights of this. Someone did not protect their intellectual property. Oh, okay, that's good, it works, okay, we're gonna move on. I guess the only other thing is just making sure these games are all good, but I mean they've got to, right? Look they're literally still sealed in the wrap.
- Yep. - Obviously still brand new. We'll put it in, make sure it works. There we go. Immortals, Phoenix Rising. Now mind you, it did not come with the power adapter or a controller, but I mean, I don't think anyone can argue that $40 is not a terrific deal for an original Xbox One.
Even if it needed a little bit of coaxing at the beginning to remember how to run an operating system. Next up, we have ourselves an original Xbox. So when we were in Goodwill, they had a couple of different tiers of consoles.
So they had consoles like this that were in the little locked shelf, that have the full set, right? So we should have a game here. Controller, cables, all that kind of stuff, for the low, low price of $49.99, we've got ourselves an original Xbox and all the goodies. It's a little dirty for sure.
It's got some like scuffs and whatnot. But I would say on the whole of it, it looks clean. At least on the outside. It does have the screws, oh, it's been opened. Oh, well I'm sure it's fine. Maybe someone modded it for me.
A little smelly condition, but it seems fine. Importantly, it's not a Duke. We also have the Arcade game, not to be confused with Xbox Live Arcade, even though it's called Xbox Live Arcade.
Now, to properly test this, we gotta plug it in. We got a CRT. This is the way that this was meant to be played.
Now mind you, this is a little bit of a smaller screen and it's probably like a 13 inch display. They did say that it had VHS bad. This is one of those TVs that you couldn't get to the input, like the video input without the remote.
See it goes straight from channel two to channel 69. Let's just see, does the Xbox fire up at all? - Oh. Oh. - Okay. Sound. - Nevermind, it works. - Hey. - Xbox. - You got the Xbox rabies.
- Oh, oh, oh. It is modded, it is modded. Let's go! Oh, look at that, we've got Nintendo Emulators, DVD. We got dongle free DVD player, hard drive, loader, bro. Oh dude, it's loaded up with ROMs too.
Oh, brother! Bible Buffet, I'm playing Bible Buffet. You better believe it. (gaming tune, "When the Saints Go Marching In") - [Alex] Wow, that is Loud. (gaming tune, "When the Saints Go Marching In") - [Austin] Which question category.
Sure. What I'm in veggie land. Oh, it's like a board game. - [Alex] So Evolution X is one of the oldest mods that you can, you know, have for the Xbox. - Yeah. - And it will let you do tons of stuff, like you can do like different skins, you can flash a different BIOS all altogether.
- There's gonna be a mod chip inside here, huh? - [Alex] Yeah. So you do need to have a mod chip inside. - And someone just donated this to Goodwill, I had no idea.
- [Alex] Yeah, I mean I, as far as I know, like more than half my friends have modded Xbox's- - Of course - Because literally you just go down to like some random dude, you pay him 20 bucks and it'll just do it for you. - So the fact that it's got like an old school mod chip and everything inside, I'm playing Bible Buffet for Super Nintendo or something right now. Well, this gameplay could use some work. Okay, now does the disc drive work? Yes it does.
All right, let's try Xbox Arcade. My Games, Miss Pacman. That's my only game. What, new releases? None, I thought that this was a collection of old like arcade games. Was Xbox Live actually like a downloadable service on the original Xbox? I always thought it started on 360. - [Alex] I think you could do it for the regular Xbox and then 360 had its own version a little bit after.
- Wait, whoa, whoa, hold on a sec, hold on a sec, wait. So you're trying to tell me that you buy the disc, Xbox Live Arcade, and then you could download Xbox Live arcade games? (funky upbeat tune) Hi, I thought I knew a lot about Xboxes. I'm learning some new stuff today. I like how all we've done in this Xbox is just play old school emulated games.
Yeah, boy. Ya fell for that one, didn't ya? I got this, I got this. (Pacman winner tune) Pacman legend. Call me Billy Mitchell. No, no, don't, don't, don't.
This is incredibly dope to have found, not only fully functional Xbox with controller, pretty much everything I need for 50 bucks like that I'm already happy with. But on the top of the fact that it's already modded with like an old school mod chip and stuff like now I really wanna crack this thing open and see what's inside. Thanks to people who donate your old Xboxes. Why would you donate Xbox? This is a perfectly good Xbox. You just keep it.
When I saw a vintage 2010, 2011 gaming pc, I could not resist. Not only is the case in surprisingly good shape, the yellow looks good, there's a couple of little port covers or little five and a quarter inch drive bays that are missing, but whatever, that's fine. Look at the size of this side fan.
That's like what a 200, 250 millimeter fan, like it's absolutely enormous. So this is the first generation of the Intel Core series, which is a huge leap over the like the Core 2 Duos and Core 2 Quads, but on top of that, this is the higher end, almost more workstation style where I think this is actually a six core processor back in like 2010, 2011. This was an expensive PC when it was first built, like that CPU alone, I wanna say was like $600 or something.
We paid 69.99 for this beautiful vintage, 14-year-old PC. - [Alex] Well actually in a pleasant surprise, it was actually on sale for half price. - We got this for $35? - Heck yeah. - Goodwill,
you're gonna make me cry, this, this, this is great. So you see they taped up in every possible spot, including the front panel. So I was not able to actually open it, but whatever.
I like voiding warranties and also, fight me. Oh man, it's one of those like pealy, gross ones. Oh dude, it's leaving all kind of goo on here, 'cause it all freaking looks stuck on. Aw man. Ah! Why is this like the world's cheapest tape too? Like come on, look at the residue. Oh, it's so dirty.
And we actually take a lot more off too 'cause like the front panel has it. Ooh, that's act, wow, wait a minute, that's actually pretty clean also, wait, it's not a 5800, it's a 5850. This is an X58, and EVGA X58 motherboard with SLI. You could have done triple SLI. You've got six gigs of RAM in there. You could have loaded up a whole lot more.
The little arm to get the PCI out, it's never been like used or it hasn't been used in like so long. It's actually like stiff. (metal clicking) Oh there we go. Behold, the HIS Radeon HD 5850, Modern Warfare 2 edition. What was the launch price on our CPU? - [Alex] When it first launched, that chip was over $660.
- So when this first generation Core i7 came out, you would have a quad core processor, it was like the high end, right? Like that was fairly new for the time. And yet this guy was rocking six cores. Like six cores didn't become popular until like seven, eight years later. The GPU, so what was a 5850? - [Alex] That one was like around 260, 280. - Okay. Yeah. 320GB hard drive.
So I will say that hard drive is gonna date the system. I mean, I wanna play Modern Warfare 2, but I'm gonna play StarCraft 2, 'cause that was a better game. So we have our gaming PC up and running. So this is a Core i7 950, not 970. So it says on the little label, you can see here, first gen Core i7 970 six core. Well in fact the 970 was in fact the six core, but this is the quad core.
Also, I will say that the hard drive lives at 100% utilization all the time, because it is a very slow, very old hard drive. Why don't we actually go and play a little bit of StarCraft 2, shall we? 1080p on high settings, that, sure. Now if you're unfamiliar, StarCraft 2 has a very special place in my heart as one of the games that I was most invested in, in this kind of era, right? Like StarCraft 2 is part of the reason why I even wanted to build my first PC. (Austin gasps) - [Alex] Spoilers. - This came out in like 2012 I think, Heart of the Swarm.
This hard drive is so slow. Even back in like 2011, Mr. Big Spender over here bought a 120 gig SSD for like $450. So if you're unfamiliar, StarCraft 2 is the greatest game of all time.
I will have no arguments. 98 FPS. Boy! That's actually pretty good. I feel like it's pretty safe to say that this PC is actually legit.
I mean, we're playing high settings 1080p, freaking a hundred FPS man? Get them boys! (laughs) There's no doubt that this is a solid pickup for 35 bucks. Like I think if this has an SSD, that's pretty much all you need. So what can we say about Goodwill Computer Works? It honestly is terrific. Now, there's nothing against buying stuff from Goodwill online, you can still get good deals there, but the shipping adds up really quick, especially for like items like this. Like this probably would've cost more to ship than it cost to actually buy.
But if you can go in and actually pick stuff up in person, it's really nice. But with the caveat, that we went to the Goodwill Computer Works. Most Goodwills, I'm honest with you, don't keep these kind of things around. Like they get shipped out either to like a Grid location, or one of the major sort of hubs.
Most of the times you walk into a Goodwill, you're gonna find a bunch of mice and radios. If you live in the SoCal area, Goodwill Computer Works is absolutely worth checking out. They've got a ton of stuff, at least when I went in and believe me when I say, I will be back. I'm not kidding, I'm going. Y'all wanna come? Let's, let's, we'll see. You know, just, another shopping cart never hurt anyone, right? - [Alex] We buy everything at a Goodwill, yay.
(door closes) (soft outro music)
