Space Tourism Has Become Reality
[Music] in this video space tourism how it all started where we are now and what to look forward to in coming decades and towards the end of this century why space tourism is so important for future space exploration and how can space tourism quicken humanity's reach first with colonization of mars but also constructing massive space colonies and eventually moving beyond this solar system and colonizing other worlds in local stellar neighborhood [Music] richard brunson and jeff bezos made space tourism reality elon musk will take us beyond confines of earth's orbit to planets and perhaps to the stars the inevitable progression of human endeavor which for many decades was stifled by lack of competition vision and government funding has come to an end jeff bezos elon musk and richard branson proved with their innovative thinking vision and let's be honest deep pockets future among the stars is inevitable and most likely will commence new era in human expansion exploration and industrial and technological innovation earth is a tiny planet with limited resources and limited opportunities for growth be it economical social or scientific humanity is that precipice of technological and economic as well as scientific epoch that will see humanity reach for the stars [Music] in past month or so we had two successful attempts of private individuals reaching space not internationally classified low orbit but sufficiently high to earn astronauts wings as defined by us faa and nasa which in many ways is a massive technical but also technological achievement if you consider accessing low earth orbit or even hundred kilometer orbit was stuff only major space agencies and governments managed to achieve not anymore a new space age is about to begin and there is no way going back the fact that few rather wealthy individuals managed to reach space by funding their own space programs is besides the point yes right now only really wealthy individuals will be able to dream of space and benches or travels beyond this blue dot we call earth but given time and we're not talking decades here but few years many would be able to reach milestone of reaching space and experience weightlessness albeit for a very short time before the through force of physics brought back to earth [Music] in all honesty we can't really call this space tourism if all you do is reach 100 kilometer orbit for several minutes and then you are forced to return to earth but the sheer fact we are doing it right now is quite encouraging as any progress no matter how small encourages innovation and new ideas so when i see small attempts by virgin galactic spacex and blue origin working towards reaching space and succeeding this opens doors for others to look for opportunities in vastness of space virgin galactic whose share skyrocket in recent months has already secured nearly 800 would be future astronauts each paying virgin galactic up to quarter million dollars for the privilege blue origin no doubt has similar number of would-be astronauts paying undisclosed amount for privilege of reaching karman line or 108 kilometer altitude however if you think this is the limit of virgin galactic plus to offer you have another thing coming [Music] spacex a third player in future space travel and space tourism is hard at work on its future rocket system that will blow any potential competition out of the water the starship rocket spacex is developing will ensure spacex remains massive player in future space exploration and not just space to them which no doubt will become massive vehicle progress and development for earth-based businesses and new era of future economic growth elon musk founder spacex has vision which would see space travel affordable for everyone with plans for a massive mass base and city that would eventually be fully sustainable and home to millions of humans spacex is developing all the necessary technical expertise in an effort to be ready for future challenges of mars and lunar basis as well as future yet undisclosed plants spacex is developing in cooperation with virgin galactic and others short term spacex has secured some exciting technical and technological demonstration projects for nasa which would see spacex develop a lunar lander orbital refueling system as well as a number of other systems that will be used by future nasa luna bays as well as developing mass architecture that will enable spacex to fulfill its own objectives of mass human lending by 2028 an establishment of human outposts and bases around the time spacex space tourism plans are also quite wide in scope and include low earth orbit visit with a starship with altitude of 160 to 320 kilometer plan initially and with cooperation of international space station space expands to bring number of paying tourists to visit iss a module specifically designed for this purpose is being designed and built it allows paying tourists to visit iss for up to one week stay although in most cases it will be only three days they offering spectacular views of earth and space [Music] there is a potential for commercial project between spacex and virgin galactic in offering longer stays in proposed virgin galactic suite hotel virgin plans to build before this decade is out this fence is still on a drawing board but if virgin space tourism venture bears fruit it will be rolled out towards the end of this decade spacex and virgin galactic joint venture is only potential for future cooperation but space expands beyond earth or with a serious and visionary nature they include construction of large mass base by 2050 could grow into self-sustainable mars city lunar bays that will be used for space tourism as well as research and potential industrial exploitation of the moon nasa is getting ready to send astronauts to explore more of the moon as part of artemis program and the agency has selected spacex to continue development of the first commercial human lender that will safely carry the next two american astronauts to the lunar surface spacex spinning nasa's moonlander competition is a significant milestone for spacex as it will allow the company to spread its reach and capability ensuring company continues to generate necessary revenue from nasa but also widens scope of its cooperation in space serving not only luna outbursts which most likely includes the international team that will be permanently present on the lunar surface but future growing marsh and outposts as well as growing earth orbital presence [Music] [Music] the space is endless and early on only strongest and most innovative players can secure their future in space but as innovation and space travel become very relevant number of companies interested in space exploitation and space travel will grow what virgin galactic and blue origin managed to achieve just a month ago will ensure humanity's future among the stars with someone who grew up on star trek shows i can only be very excited at prospects that lie ahead yes we have earthly problems and quite concerning one as well global warming and ongoing climate change are most radical events in our lifetime but one must have hope space exploration for me offers that hope [Music] [Music] people dreamt of visiting the moon since 19th century back in 1634 john wilkins an anglican bishop proposed a conceptualized idea of a one-day humanity exploring and living on the moon mars and beyond in nineteenth century constantine tsiokovsky who lived in 1857 to 1935 proposed similar ideas but it was not until recently that we managed to send humans at the surface of the moon and that was back in 1969 myself and many of you who watched this video wouldn't have witnessed this event as it was before we were born but we might witness manned moon landing for the first time in not too distant future and mass landing perhaps even before that back to first ever space tourist on april 30 2001 u.s millionaire dennis tito arrived on international space station with the russian soyuz rocket becoming the world's first ever space tourist subsequently further seven tourism is to visit iss [Music] it was not until early 2000s when we started to see some glimpse of what future space exploration might look like nasa was looking at various rocket systems that will eventually replace space shuttle program which proved costly and limited nasa on its tiny budget on what can be done alternatives on offer went cheaper and although massive campaign to promote first constellation and various other programs proved massive drain on nasa limited means but glimpse of things are changing started emerge in the year 2000 jeff bezos founded space flight company blue origin with explicit idea of moving humanity beyond confines of this planet into loth orbit and beyond his vision would initially be financed by utilizing and promoting suburbs or space flights garnering support among space enthusiasts initially and eventually becoming mainstream commercially blue origin began testing its new shepherd vehicle in 2015 a small rocket is named after alan shepard the second person and first american in space and the first flight is time to mark 52nd anniversary of the apollo 11th moon landing with massive windows to give an apparel view of earth and comfortable seating for up to six people new shepherd is explicitly designed to serve the space tourism market and after besso's inaugural flight seats on future trips will be made available to the general public for the undisclosed price the system comprising of single stage rocket and crude capsule a month ago managed to perform first successful manned flight to 107 kilometers orbit or what is called carmen line virgin galactic company founded in 2004 by british billionaire richard branson had similar ideas without backing of trillion dollar companies such as amazon branson approached bert rutten for inspiration who came up with the design of a spaceship space plane that can take would be space travelers to 80 kilometers or 110 kilometer orbit to experience weightlessness for 10 maybe 12 minutes before returning to earth all these efforts pale in comparison when compared to spacex vision which is not only at this world literally [Music] spacex which formed in 2002 by elon musk has managed to transform how humanity accesses the space using reusable rocket design falcon 9 which relies on reusable rocket engine marin 1d rocket engine that made reusable rocket possible something until most recent seven eight years was never attempted commercially space expision goes beyond falcon 9 rocket and beyond low earth orbit which falcon 9 was designed for spacex ambition lies among the stars with first step being orbital flights supporting nasa efforts spacex managed to out-compete its direct competition in form of unite launch alliance which dominated space launch business in u.s for many decades [Music] spacex managed to out-compete unite launch alliance which relied heavily on u.s federal agencies launches in particular department of defense nasa federal aviation authority and other federal agencies by being drastically cheap alternative to united launch alliance slashing costs launched per kilogram into low earth orbit from 20 to 22 000 united launch alliance charge down to twenty four hundred dollars and now seventeen hundred dollars per kilogram launch into low earth orbit unite launch alliance which relied on same old designs that lacked innovation but were full of marketing spin lost heavily to spacex which went from strength to strength with current projections putting the company at 32 billion evaluation [Music] spacex hasn't launched space tourist yet however it plans to initiate orbital and beyond earth space tourism which could see spacex initially launch futuristic international space station and perhaps to upper reaches of low earth orbit something spacex plans to do in coming months in fact with axiom 1 mission spacex plans to send four would be space tourists to international space station and another mission on yes scheduled would see space theories reach for one thousand or even two thousand kilometer low earth orbit using dragon 2 crude dragon capsule up fitted for long term mission lasting several days however longer term in 2023 space expands to fly yasuku mazawa around the moon using spacex starship currently under development [Music] we are at the infancy of mass space travel and space tourism has barely started so it's hard to talk about future space travel and space tourism when we don't know what we are facing presently that being said it is not too early to make some assumptions of what we can expect in coming few years decades and towards the end of this century but i'd also like to emphasize why space tourism is so important as a kid who grew up on star trek deep space nine and babylon fire shows i can tell you space and space travel expansion into space was something i always dreamt of the possibility of what space offers and what future holds for humankind if we assert and commit ourselves to space exploration but also exploitation many issues that we find over on this planet such as resources water oil and so on become redundant as a large asteroid has more resources than we ever need in our current consumption and there are billions upon billions of asteroids out there to be explored and mined future will be dominated less by state actors and more by multinational corporations such as spacex boeing lockheed martin blue origin virgin galactic rocket labs and so on yes china is seriously expanding in space and they are catching up with nasa really fast the fact that chinese managed to put space station into low earth orbit at the same time land rover on mars is astonishing china is second nation to succeed in doing this after u.s
but as with commercial interest in u.s which dominate u.s space program or about to eventually same thing will also replicate in china and elsewhere simply put government run programs are beset with rules regulations and are open to external pressure commercial programs are pretty left to themselves if they can prove they are not a hazard to humans or our little planet [Music] space is vast and untapped no company on this planet can or will be able to control this vastness spacex might be among the first companies developing ideas and technologies that will see humanity move beyond confines of this pale blue dot however this is a long game and no company can be the only one that innovates explores and brings vision that will see humanity go beyond there's room for many companies and many ideas in space and early day competition might be ideologically led there'll be supporters for one idea which might be spacex driven but there are russians chinese europeans nasa and not forgetting richard branson's virgin galactic and jeff bezos's blue origin so what is the role of space tourism all this well space tourism brings interest and attention important for commercial success without it there is little hope we could move away from this planet elon musk is doing some brilliant work in expanding our horizons mentally but also giving us hope and vision that we could one day become interplanetary species colonizing inner three planets and move on beyond our solar system space tourism is the vehicle that allow for people to dream to aspire and to support such endeavors prompting space commercialization at much faster pace than this was possible in the past space tourism in other words will encourage commercial companies other than spacex to plan and execute their own ideas related to space exploration this in turn will encourage innovation a large investment necessary to move humanity of earth and deeper into our solar system [Music] spacex already plans to explore the idea of moving to another solar system before the century is out in fact elon musk once mentioned that he hoped to see interstellar travel possible before this century is out i genuinely hope and i think we are living in an exciting era at no point in our past humanity was capable or able to do so much with such a rapid technological pace humanity will colonize venus mars and some of the jovian moons before these centuries out build giant orbital space stations that span the solar system that are home to millions of humans however space tourism will play important role in bringing this vision [Music] thank you for watching next week on tuesday another video at 8 30 uk time if you like this video please press like subscribe and consider supporting me on patreon links in the description also i'll be making videos on a weekly basis so please come often thank you [Music] [Music] [Music] you
