IT IS MY PLEASURE TO WELCOME PRIME MINISTER YOSHIHIDE SUGA TO THE WHITE HOUSE AND THISIS MY FIRST IN PERSON MEETING AND THE FIRST HEAD OF STATE I HAVE ASKED IN MY ADMINISTRATION TO COME TO THE WHITE HOUSE. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THE LONG TRIP TO WASHINGTON BUT WE HAVE MET SEVERAL TIMES VIRTUALLY AT THE G7 SUMMIT AND I GREATLY APPRECIATE THE CHANCE TO SPEND TIME WITH YOU IN PERSON AND EXCHANGE IDEAS FACE-TO-FACE. THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR FACE- TO-FACE DISCUSSIONS. WE ARE STILL TAKING COVID PRECAUTIONS AND BEING CAREFUL. BUT OUR COMMITMENT TO MEET IN PERSON IS INDICATIVE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THE VALUE WE PLACE ON THIS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES.

I VISITED THAT AREA SHORTLY AFTER IT HAPPENED AND IN OUR PRIVATE MUCH THE PRIME MINISTER AND I TALKED ABOUT THAT WHEN I WAS VICE PRESIDENT VISITING THE FAMILIES IN THE GIONTO SHOW SUPPORT OF THE UNITED STATES. WE CONTINUE TO MOURN THE LOSS OF ALL OF THOSE FOLKS AND TO HONOR THE EXTRAORDINARY JOINT EFFORT BETWEEN JAPAN AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN THE WAKE OF THAT TRAGEDY, TO RECOVER AND TO REBUILD. THIS PERSONAL BONDS OF FRIENDSHIP AND CONNECTION, THEY ARE THE ONES THAT WILL KEEP THIS ALLIANCE STRONG FOR DECADES TO COME. I'M ESPECIALLY PROUD THAT TODAY WE AGREED TO RESUME WHAT IS CALLED THE MANSFIELD FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM.
TO PROMOTE PEOPLE TO PEOPLE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN OUR COUNTRIES. BEFORE, MIKE MANSFIELD, THE BELOVED AMBASSADORS JAPAN BECAME AMBASSADORS, HE WAS A MENTOR OF MINE AFTER HE CAME TO THE SENATE AFTER MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER WERE KILLED. HE HELPED ME ALONG IN WAYS I CANNOT EXPLAIN IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE.
I AM PROUD THIS LEGACY CONTINUES TO BE HONORED AS PART OF A CLOSE AND ENDURING PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN R NATIONS. AND YOSHI , I KNOW HOW PROUD YOU ARE AND THE PEOPLE OF JAPAN ARE, AND YOU HAVE A JAPANESE BOY COMING OVER HERE AND GUESS WHAT? HE WON THE MASTERS. HE WON THE GREEN JACKET. PRESIDENT BIDEN'S COMMENT ABOUT DISCRIMINATION AND VIOLENCE THAT IT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED AND HE FIRMLY OPPOSES WAS EXTREMELY ENCOURAGING FOR ME AND HAS RENEWED MY CONFIDENCE IN AMERICAN DEMOCRACY ONCE AGAIN. I TOLD THE PRESIDENT ABOUT MY DETERMINATION TO REALIZE THE OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC GAMES THIS SUMMER AS A SYMBOL OF GLOBAL UNITY. PRESIDENT BIDEN ONCE AGAIN EXPRESSED HIS SUPPORT FOR THIS DETERMINATION. JAPAN IS LISTENING TO COME AND LEARNING FROM, WHO EXPERTS AND DOING EVERYTHING POSSIBLE TO CONTAIN INFEION AND TO ALLOW SAFE AND SECURE GAMES FROM A SCIENTIFIC AND OBJECTIVE PERSPECTIVE.

ONCE AGAIN I EXPRESS MY HEARTFELT GRATITUDE BEFORE THE KIND INVITATION. THANK YOU.>> NOW WE WILL EACH TAKE A FEW QUESTIONS, I WILL BEGIN BY RECOGNIZING THE ASSOCIATED PRESS.
MR. MARY HAD THE FIRST QUESTION. >> THANK YOU MR. PRESIDENT AND MR. PRIME MINISTER RUPERT MR.
PRESIDENT IN YOUR LAST PRESS CONFERENCE YOU SAID SUCCESSFUL PRESIDENTS PRIORITIZE AND YOU WOULD FOCUS YOUR AGENDA ONE THING AT A TIME. I WOULD ASK WHAT DO YOU SAY TO MANY AMERICANS WHO VOTED FOR YOU ABOUT LEGISLATIVE PROGRESS ON GUN CONTROL AND POLICE REFORMS. GIVEN THAT WE CONTINUE TO SEE THESE INCIDENTS WITH SHOOTING, AND POLICE SHOOTINGS, A LOT OF IN CHICAGO MOST RECENTLY, THE FEEL THE NEED TO REPRIORITIZE YOUR AGENDA?>> I HAVE NEVER NOT PRIORITIZE THE SPIRIT NO ONE HAS WORKED HARDER AGAINST VIOLENCE OF PEOPLE WHO VIEWS THEM AND I'M THE ONLY ONE WITH A PASS ON ASSAULT WEAPONS AND A 10 YEAR BAN ON CLIPS WITH MORE THAN 10 BULLETS. I ASKED THE ATTORNEY GENERAL TO PUT TOGETHER THE THINGS I COULD DO BY EXECUTIVE ORDER, INCLUDING DEALING WITH NEW GUNS THAT COULD BE MADE, IT COULD BUY IN PIECES AND PUT TOGETHER, AND OTHER INITIATIVES.
I STRONGLY SUPPORT THE UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS, WHICH I CONTINUE TO PUSH. CONGRESS HAS TO STEP UP AND ACT IN THE SENATE HAS TO ACT AND I WILL NEVER STOP SUPPORTING THE BAN ON ASSAULT WEAPONS AND MAGAZINES WITH MORE THAN 10 BULLETS. IT DOES NOT MEAN I CAN'T ALSO BE WORKING AT THE SAME TIME ON THE ECONOMY AND ON COVID. IT IS NOT A QUESTION OF MY BEIN THE SENATE IS WHAT THEY WILL MOVE TO FIRST. I CONTINUE AND I STRONGLY URGE MY REPUBLICAN FRIENDS IN THE CONGRESS WHO REFUSE TO BRING UP THIS BILL TO BRING IT UP NOW. THIS HAS TO END AND IT IS A NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT.
IT IS A NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT THAT IS GOING ON. IT IS NOT ONLY THESE MASS SHOOTINGS THAT ARE OCCURRING, EVERY SINGLE DAY, EVERY SINGLE DAY THERE IS A MASS SHOOTING IN THE UNITED STATES IF YOU COUNT ALL OF THOSE KILLED ON THE STREETS OF OUR CITIES AND RURAL AREAS. IT IS A NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT AND IT MUST COME TO ANY AND. THE FOCUS ON WEAPONS AND THOSE WHO OWN GUNS, THEY SUPPORT UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHEC D A MAJORITY OF THEM THINK WE SHOULD NOT BE SELLING ASSAULT WEAPONS.
WHO IN GOD'S NAME NEEDS A WEAPON THAT CAN HOLD 100 ROUNDS OR 40 ROUNDS OR 20 ROUNDS IT IS WRONG. I WILL NOT GIVE UP UNTIL IT IS DONE. DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION? OR RECOGNIZE SOMEONE MR. PRIME MINISTER? >> THANK YOU.
AT THE SUMMIT I BELIEVE THAT CHINA POLICY WAS ONE OF THE CENTRAL AGENDA ITEMS SO MY QUESTION IS ON CHINA POLICY. BOTH GOVERNMENTS NSID ACE AND STABILITY OF TAIWAN IS OF GREAT IMPORTANCE AND THAT HAVE BEEN THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES. WHAT KIND OF INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED IN TODAY'S MEETING? IN ORDER TO DETER CONTINGENCY IN THE STREETS, WHAT CAN JAPAN DO AND PUT AN END TO WHEN CONTINGENCY OCCURS IN THE TAIWAN STREETS. DID YOU DISCUSS WHAT JAPAN CAN DO UNDER SUCH CIRCUMSTANCES? AND WHAT ABOUT THE HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE, GREAT CONCERN IS SHARED BY THE TWO COUNTRIES.
IT IS THE ONLY G-7 COUNTRY THAT HAS NOT IMPOSE SANCTIONS ON CHINA YESTERDAY? WERE YOU ABLE TO OBTAIN ANY UNDERSTANDING? AS WE ENGAGE IN IT INTERVIEWS OVER THE RECENT SITUATION ALSO DISCUSSED THE CIRCUMSTANCES IN TAIWAN AND THE AUTONOMOUS NATION AS WELL. I REFRAIN FROM MENTIONING DETAILS SINCE IT PERTAINS TO DIPLOMATIC EXCHANGES. BUT THERE IS ALREADY AN AGREED RECOGNITION OVER THE IMPORTANCE OF PEACE AND STABILITY BETWEEN THE JAPAN AND THE UNITED STATES.
AND THIS WAS REAFFIRMED ON THIS OCCASION. I ALSO EXPLAINED JAPAN'S POSITION AND INITIATIVES REGARDING THE SITUATION IN THE AUTONOMOUS REGION TO THE PRESIDENT,HO THINK UNDERSTOOD MY POINT.>> NEXT QUESTION GOES TO TREVOR AT REUTERS.>> THANK YOU. MR. PRESIDENT IT HAS BEEN A WHILE SINCE WE'VE HEARD AND UPDATE FROM YOU ON HOW THE TALKS ARE GOING WITH IRAN.
HOW ARE THEY GOING AND DO YOU REGARD THEIR DECISION TO ENRICH TO 60% AS A STEP BACKWARDS AS A SIGN THEY ARE NOT SERIOUS ABOUT THOSE NEGOTIATIONS? AND FOR THE PRIME MINISTER, A QUESTION ON WHETHER IT IS IRRESPONSIBLE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE OLYMPICS WHEN YOU HAVE PUBLIC HEALTH EXPERTS TELLING YOU JAPAN IS IT READY TO DO SO.>> LET ME RESPOND TO THE IR QUEION. WE DO NOT SUPPORT AND DO NOT THINK IT IS AT ALL HELPFUL THAT IRAN IS SAYING THEY WILL MOVE TO ENRICH TO 60%. IT IS CONTRARY TO THE AGREEMENT. WE ARE THOUGH NONETHELESS PLEASE THAT IRAN HAS CONTINUED TO AGREED TO ENGAGE IN DISCUSSIONS, AND WITH OUR PARTNERS, AND HOW WE MOVE FORWARD, AND WHAT IS NEEDED TO ALLOW US TO MOVE BACK INTO THE CONFERENCE OR PART OF IT WE SHOULD NEVER HAVE GOTTEN OUT OF IN MY VIEW, WITHOUT US MAKING CONCESSIONS THAT WE ARE NOT WILLING TO MAKE. DISCUSSIONS ARE UNDERWAY AND IT IS PREMATURE TO MAKE A JUDGMENT AS TO THE OUTCOME BUT WE ARE STILL TALKING.
>> IF I MAY COME HAVE A ESTI TO IME NISTER SUGA REGARDING THE TOKYO OLYMPICS AND PARALYMPICS PLAN FOR THIS SUMMER. DID THE PRESIDENT MENTION ABOUT THE CONCRETE PROMISE OF SENDING IMMIGRANT ATHLETES OR ANY POSITIVE COMMENTS? IF YOU COULD TELL US WHAT THE EXCHANGES AND THE CONVERSATIONS DURING THE MEETING ABOUT THE COVID VACCINES AND CLIMATE CHANGE. , AND THEN PROVING THAT ICS WERE 2030, A REDUCTION TARGET, ANY ACTIONS WERE DISCUSSED PLEASE.
AND AS WAS MENTIONED IN THE BEGINNING I EXPRESS MY DETERMINATION ABOUT THE. PRESIDENT CONTINUE RATION ORDER . REGARDING THE CLIMATE CHANGE THIS IS ANOTHER BOTH PRESIDENT BIDEN AND I EMPHASIZE. DURING THE TALK TODAY, WE HAVE CONFIRMED TO STRENGTHEN FINANCIAL COOPERATION AND COLLABORATION IN THE AREA OF CLIMATE CHANGE AND WE HAVE AGREED TO LAUNCH THE JAPAN/U.S. CLIMATE PARTNERSHIP, WHICH IS EXTREMELY MEANINGFUL AND SIGNIFICANT.>> THANK YOU ALL
VERY MUCH AND THANK YOU MR. PRIME MINISTER, TAKES AGAIN EVERYONE. >> LADIES AND GENTLEMEN PLEASE REMAIN IN YOUR SEATS UNTIL TH PRESIDENT, PRIME MINISTER AND THE DELEGATIONS HAVE DEPARTED.
