Manufacturing a Resilient Future with Microsoft Cloud for Manufacturing | BRK228
[Music] hello i'm charlie anarchan vice president of manufacturing and supply chain at microsoft for our colleagues who are visually impaired i'm a white male with no hair and i do have glasses i'm wearing jeans a button button-down shirt and a blazer i'm joining you today from maxwell studios on the redmond washington campus the manufacturing industry has witnessed a sea change over the last 18 months a significant disruption in terms of business continuity operational visibility supply chains remote work employee safety and the list goes on and on we have seen manufacturers rise to these unprecedented challenges and adapt to new ways of working to new business models as they accelerate their use of digital technology we have seen evidence that those manufacturers who are already embracing digital transformation have been more agile in weathering recent disruption and now more and more companies are realizing the urgent need to accelerate their move to digital 62 percent of manufacturers are forging ahead with their smart manufacturing investments increasing by 20 percent this year alone these investments in smart manufacturing are also generating an explosion of data for example a smart factory can generate one petabyte of data per day but most companies are not even using one percent of their data let alone extracting net new value from it such as new business models to truly understand your data and drive the right outcomes from it you need capabilities that empower intelligence at the edge and in the cloud in satya's own words move from systems or record to systems of reality i love this when we look across the ecosystem every manufacturer we have talked with has a new appreciation of their partnerships from their cloud technology provider to their industrial automation partners to their supply chain partners and further we are proud that our manufacturing customers have been quick to adopt microsoft teams as in their own words a mission-critical platform for keeping the lights on this is not just about their front-line workers though teams has been a critical platform for manufacturers in terms of keeping their customers businesses online as well gartner predicts that 35 of customer service workloads will be performed through some form of remote work by 2023 and that by employing iot and remote services capabilities manufacturers can increase technician productivity by an average of 25 as we look at the impact of these trends we have seen our customers accelerate investments in five key areas transforming your workforce which is about closing the skills gap and re-skilling your workforce unlocking innovation and delivering new services which is about accelerating your cycles using digital twins simulations additive manufacturing and more building more agile factories which moves manufacturing operations to digital enabling remote operations leveraging digital threads building itot convergence creating more resilient supply chains and gradually moving to sustainable and autonomous supply chains and finally engaging customers in new ways by embracing online sales on delivery connected field services contact life cycle management etc these are areas where microsoft and our partners have been securely connecting experiences across the end-to-end value chain with microsoft cloud capabilities however we know that one of the biggest blockers to digitalization efforts is around cyber security concerns securely connecting factory assets for smart manufacturing or supporting remote access by frontline workers for always-on service are just some of the ways we are helping manufacturers accelerate digitalization and cloud adoption at scale and with the utmost trust compliance privacy and transparency as with everything we do we strive to advance opportunities to create a more sustainable future as we reimagine every step of the product and service life cycle journey we have been working diligently with our customers partners and across our engineering teams to identify where we can deliver the most value in manufacturing across these key areas accelerating digitalization of manufacturing and empowering the modern workforce so i am extremely excited to announce today our initial preview of the microsoft cloud for manufacturing the micro microsoft platform manufacturing uniquely connects experiences across end-to-end product and service life cycles using a set of capabilities that safely and securely accelerate digital transformation and core innovation with our partner ecosystem across businesses of all sizes and increasing resilience for sustained growth and profitability you will find these capabilities like asset productivity learning and knowledge management always on service supply chain visibility and more as showcased on our microsoft platform manufacturing website and i'm particularly excited about how we are integrating microsoft teams front line worker and mixed reality across these capabilities this will allow manufacturers to surface critical insights from securely connected iot assets and products in dynamics 365 business applications now let's hear from satish thomas on the industry-tailored investments we have been making across data capabilities and partners to accelerate time to value for the microsoft cloud for manufacturing and our other industry clouds satish over to you cool thank you chalian i'm super excited to talk about our microsoft industry clouds a year ago we launched our first the microsoft cloud for healthcare today i'd like to share what's coming next over the past year the global pandemic has proven to be a catalyst for digital transformation organizations across industries were compelled to fit years of change into just months and use technology to compete and grow this means investing in people and the capacity to create new solutions to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing economy our deep commitment to industry is not new but it's taken on a new sense of urgency and we're committed to helping every organization to use technology to improve time to value increase agility and reduce costs we recognize every industry is unique our aim is to deliver solutions tailored to their specific needs as you've heard from charlie earlier we're announcing the preview of the microsoft cloud for manufacturing today furthermore this event we're also announcing that the microsoft cloud for financial services and non-profit are generally available every industry cloud has three key pieces data capabilities and a rich partner ecosystem it all starts with data we're investing both in industry data models and data connectors to bring in high value data to power business processes tailored for each industry these new industry clouds bring together the breadth of our offerings across the microsoft cloud azure power platform microsoft 365 and dynamics 365. in addition we've added new capabilities templates connectors and standards unique to each industry finally and most importantly our industry clouds can be augmented by an unmatched global ecosystem of trusted partners we work with leading isvs and system integrators so our customers in every region have a comprehensive set of solutions to address their unique business challenges we're bringing all these investments together in an end-to-end vision to help manufacturers with their digital transformation the beauty of the microsoft cloud for manufacturing is that we can meet you where you're at we can start with your greatest pain points and identify how to best overcome them first then you can continue the journey with us to identify other areas to transform your customer engagement and optimize your operations be it from microsoft solutions or partner solutions let me show you how this looks like from a customer journey perspective so i'm first going to start with the microsoft cloud for manufacturing website so as you can see here it has the value prop it has essentially some of the key capabilities that we're seeding with built the top of the entire microsoft cloud you'll see some of the customer use cases and more importantly the partner ecosystem that helps us provide the most comprehensive set of scenarios for the manufacturing industry so one of the things you'll notice here is if you look at a lot of these use cases and partner solutions they built across multiple technologies uh within the microsoft cloud and one of the things we've done as part of our industry cloud efforts is build a microsoft cloud solution center so what the microsoft cloud solutions center does is it helps customers and partners consume the set of scenarios that you just saw that are part of this industry cloud across each of these technologies so you'll you'll see a few examples here such as you know connected and front line worker the use case that's leveraging microsoft 365 for frontline workers you will see scenarios around asset productivity that leverages azure defender for iot dynamics 365 and more and then finally just one more example always on service that leverages dynamics 365 a remote assist customer service etc and and we're just getting started one of the most important parts about all of this is in addition to these use cases that we seed with we also enable a rich partner ecosystem to build scenarios and enable scenarios that show up alongside these and together with the microsoft cloud those seated scenarios and the partner ecosystem we're able to provide the most comprehensive set of scenarios for the manufacturing industry in every region with this preview we're getting started there's a lot more we plan to do in this area and i'm really looking forward to all the feedback and collaboration with our customers and our partners with that thank you and i'll hand it off to chalian thank you satish i hope you all are as excited about these investments as we are we invite you to join our ask the expert session to learn more about these microsoft cloud for manufacturing preview capabilities and now i'm extremely excited to introduce arun baskarababa and zikar dywood from johnson and johnson to talk about their use of microsoft cloud capabilities to help them fulfill their vision for next generation manufacturing thank you chilean my name is zikar dawood i'm the vice president of information technology and supply chain for research design and engineering since the founding of our company johnson and johnson continue to use the technology of time to advance health around the world in peril johnson and johnson use the technology to help and enable us to shape transform and change our company in order for us to meet the most or most important need of health in society around the world hello everyone i am arun kumar bhaskar baba my team supports all of the manufacturing operations of johnson and johnson as zikar said we are on the trajectory to change the health for the humanity and we see technology at the core of this change the technology is the enabler so that we can really unlock the power of the data and insights and help our business and we see that that is also a critical aspect of digital manufacturing when you look at our johnson johnson we have all types of manufacturing whether you have process manufacturing or discrete manufacturing or high velocity manufacturing you name it we got it if you think about how we produce biological products in our pharma operations like vaccines or biologicals the chemical manufacturing that we have in our pharmaceuticals the assembly that we do with our medical devices the foundry operations with our global orthopedics and then our high velocity lenses where we produce our contact lenses every aspect of our manufacturing is going to be transformed through the digital capabilities overall our supply chain we are in a journey to become customer-centric pull-based supply chain and we see digital manufacturing at the core of it in order for us to enable all of this it has to be about our business drivers for supply chain innovation it starts with the customers and ends with the customers and to do that we need to have the visibility of our operations or manufacturing operation this gives us the ability to orchestrate our operations around the world across our plans by enabling that now we have the ability to anticipate customer read and respond to them in a productive manner that also give us the ability to build the resiliency in our operation in order to continue our product flow globally and meet our customer needs this is also a critical component of our digital manufacturing business drivers and that's really around increasing the accum digital acumen across our manufacturing floor what we're talking about here is raising the skills of our manufacturing people in order for them to become the future of digital workers we see that digital capabilities are going to touch every aspect of our manufacturing operations whether we talk about bringing the orders and dynamically syncing the orders with our operations whether we look at our overall manufacturing operations and providing the flexibility to drive the agility that is needed in the line whether we look at the resilience of our manufacturing operations our driving quality and compliance and regulatory aspects of our manufacturing we look at digital the aspect of it for example looking at dynamic operation sensing so that we can immediately sense what is happening at the customer end and tailor our manufacturing whether we are looking at real time release in our pharmaceutical operations so that we can actually use the data to prove that our production processes are in compliance and producing high quality products we see that digital is touching all of those areas and most importantly digital worker is a key enabler for us hashtag operator rules we want to make sure that every operator is empowered to leverage all these digital technologies to really enable that lean efficient operations that produce the products that our patients customers and consumers globally trust and rely on and for us what we call the foundational enabling or smart factory or what i refer to must-have enablers is start with the digital visibility of your assets to do that you will need to have an integrated data architecture that allow you to interconnect all the different pieces across your factory line that gives you the end-to-end visibility of your assets and by doing that now you have an integrated manufacturing system platform in your shops and that will help you now integrate partners in different ecosystems you do that with what we call cloud disk capabilities and leverage what we call the intelligent of the cloud in order for you to build that end-to-end digital asset capability and you do that with secure compliance manners and our view is that the traditional level four level three level two level one from enterprise systems to the manufacturing equipment need to be disrupted we have to rethink that it is no longer a hierarchical model it's going to be a connected network model enabled by edge and iot devices enabled by modular manufacturing systems so we really see that no longer we should think about them hierarchical it should be a connected network of layers all the way from equipment to the enterprise systems our equipments are becoming very very smart so how do we actually take that power and connect them if we continue to do hierarchical we will never be able to gain all those benefits so we are really thinking about it totally differently as a network model and this is where we actually see what we call the disruption and how we look into our digital stack and all what we call building the future of our smart factory what you see in here level zero to level four we see them as one integrated model this is what we're doing is creating the of architecture in our manufacturing this starts with your core manufacturing execution system you build on top of that what we call intelligent modular applications and that will give you now what we call the hybrid capability between core technology and your applications so how do we go about to do something like this johnson and johnson technology manufacturing approach is really to move into the manufacturing portal is what we call transforming from our traditional manufacturing into the next generation manufacturing to do that we're looking into moving into the cloud and this is where we're leveraging microsoft cloud to enable us to move from something what we call today traditionally the macro services macro services is really when you start to build your manufacturing platform and applications and anytime you touch something you have to disrupt the entire operations our goal leveraging microsoft cloud is to move from these macro services into many services what many services is allow me right now to build core functionality and application intelligent application into different domains without really impacting the end to end operations the benefits of many services with microsoft cloud give me a great flexibility or give us a johnson johnson great flexibility to enable us to be able to adapt to changes whether that's market needs customer needs or even adopting a new technology faster better and cheaper with that now we could enable the next generation manufacturing capability that gives me a real-time visibility into my manufacturing operation end to end using ai and data science will help me take a look and understand what are and what's happening with our material and product of law it also enabled me to interconnect my devices in what we call smartly connect my devices across the manufacturing floor and finally which is really most important erasing the digital acumen with our people on the shop floor which what we call the digital work and when this comes together with this partner ecosystem based on microsoft cloud and the partners like mes and lims and other partners when we get into the cloud we see this connected intelligent enterprise becoming a reality and that actually helps us to drive the productivity of our operations with lean mindset but more importantly helps us to deliver our promise to our patients and customers and consumers globally and this is not just on paper we are actually seeing these results we have given back uptime to our manufacturing with the close to near zero downtime platforms and we have seen our operators becoming more productive by leveraging these digital capabilities and actually we are so happy that five of our sites have been recognized as lighthouse sites by world economic forum but more importantly we are able to deploy advanced capabilities into our manufacturing floor with significant speed we reduced our time to deploy by close to 25 percent especially during covet when every single plant of ours was expected to operate because we were producing life-saving devices and drugs we were supposed to run all of our plants and this digital capability has enabled us to deploy remote monitoring of our equipment smart collaboration advanced analytics tools real-time release capabilities into our floor in a much more faster way yeah definitely that has helped us to reduce the cost to deploy but more importantly it helps us to deliver on the promise to our patients our customers and our consumers globally it is in our credo that is our first statement in our credo is our responsibility to our patients customers and consumers globally and the digital manufacturing capabilities are enabling us to do that thank you and back to you chaglian thank you arun thank you zikar as our ceo satya nadallah shared at the world economic forum's global lighthouse network event earlier this year it has been a privilege for us to work with johnson and johnson to leverage microsoft cloud technology to develop your vaccines and we're proud to continue this journey to accelerate your digitalization efforts in your factories as a manufacturer ourselves passionately dedicated to creating a resilient and sustainable future we look forward to working with more manufacturing customers across the globe to accelerate the rto possible and transform the workforce using the capabilities of the microsoft cloud for manufacturing powered by the innovation of our extensive partner ecosystem i invite you to join our ask the experts session to engage directly with our manufacturing team and stay updated at microsoft.com forward slash manufacturing thank you for joining microsoft and our guests from johnson and johnson
