Drum Tech POV | A New Tour Begins
Waddup, dudes :) Long time no see! Did ya miss me!? I missed you :( We are sooo back. Back in full force for the rest of the year. Let's see how production is doing as far as set up. What do ya know? We have plenty of time :) This is the third show of this tour.
HOLY LED carts!!! Time to find the backline truck. It apears all of Auburn is here waiting for me. Drums don't get to live on a riser this time :( Breaks my lil heart... Chris is back! Surely you guys remember Chris, right? W's in the chat for Chris. Guys... I got new drum cases!!! Shout out to "Just In Case Road Cases" for getting these done in such short notice!! I had them made to stack to save space if we ever needed.
And we definitely needed it on this tour. I just want to get them out of the way for now. I won't be building the kit for another couple hours. Gotta thank the hands for saving my lower back every day. Shall we explore the venue a little??? We shall. I've got nothing else to do for a while.
Major Gilford vibes. This is Logan. He's doing Front of House on this run. He hurt his finger so I didnt want to fist bump too hard Big ole' rock show about to go down here Let's check out FOH (front of house) This is where the Front of House engineer and the Lighting Director live during the show.
They get the best view. ...well some would argue I do idk So much nature at this venue. Pretty neat! This rail would be great to 50/50 grind down Hell yeah.
You could get some overpriced Taco's here probably Let's go up to the top. Cool! Had to post on IG that I was making a new video lol @matthorndrums Alright. Let's get back to work. It's Pip! He forgot his tour pass. Logan "They actually have a g*n that they're gonna shoot you with" XD This is Paul, our stage manager/carpenter. We're going to get my drum risers set up so I can start building the kit. Watch your fingers! There's A LOT of pyro so I have lots of fans to keep Luke cool.
I've already added another since this show. Oh, and we added two air conditioning units as well lol The new Pelican is starting to collect some stickers finally. Man I love having real drum boats... Thank you again Just In Case Road Cases! KickBlock also sent me a bunch of stuff for this gig! I wont do a gig without them anymore. Super strong velcro bottom that keeps your kick drum and pedals from sliding around.
My pelican is a mess... sorry I need my tape measure to find the center of this deck. Just gonna use this marker to mark center for now. 8ft deck means 4ft is the center.
I'll throw some spike tape there later. Looks good to me! The ole DW's are back in action! It's a Stone Cold Steve Austin/diet Coke shirt that says... "100% Pure Whoop Asspartame" Hey! It me :) I like to pull the mic cables out for the audio guys. Then re adjust the muffling inside the kick drum.
DW 9002 XF's Making sure none of the tension rods came loose. The KickBlock keeping that pedal in place. We added an 18" floor tom for this tour! This is D2. I keep the 16" floor, rack, main snare, spare snare, hardware, and sticks in here. We also got a new cowbell! LETS GOOOO!!! All DW hardware on this kit. The CC guy is gonna go take a break during the hardware section.
"Do you have any tours after this?" Not changing any heads today. It's day 3 with these guys. I'm get the cymbals on the riser so I don't have to take the cases to the stage later. All cymbals are Meinl. Might as well put the ones I can reach up. Luke Holland Signature Baby Stack.
21" C Squared Ride 14" Pure Alloy Hi Hats I brought my own throne to sit on finally lol No more sitting on my Pelican lol Crazy Susan is back! Luke will sign these old heads and send them to the merch table. Can't forget the spare snare. Let's do some tuning! I use a mallet to tap tune. No attack. Just tone. I also grabbed a Tune Bot.
We had the drums sounding real nice at reahearsal. So I took some notes down on my phone to match that for the whole tour. We're aiming for around 195 Hz on the racks bottom head.
193 is close enough. This is only my third time using the Tune Bot But so far the drums have been VERY consistent. I bought this by the way. They didn't give me it and tell me to tell all of you that it's sick. Nice. We're aiming for 175ish on the batter head. The top was about 10-15hz too high all around.
I'll bring each rod down by an eighth of a turn and see what that does. Damn guitar players... I'm not too worried about getting everything EXACT. I'll fine tune once I get on stage if I need to.
I mean... damn. It's pretty even! Sick. Getting that Snare Weight M80 back in place. For the 18" floor tom I'm doing an even 100hz on top and bottom. They had all loosened up to about 90hz so i'll tune each rod up a bit.
Close enough. And finally for the 16" floor tom, I'm aiming for 120hz on the top and bottom heads. I'll just tune the batter heads by ear if I need to today.
I at least know I wont have to be flipping drums upside down up on the riser. The key was never seen again. Locking the decks together. 18" Byzance China Luke Holland Signature Bullet Stack 18" Pure Alloy Crash 19" Byzance Medium Thin Crash I have three Snare Weight M80's on the 18" floor tom.
This thing will resoonate for and eternity. Also the 16" floor tom makes it resonate as well. Thanks for the vibey lights, Alex.
Even though we're not changing heads. We can still try and make them look new. Gotta have a clean work enviornment. I'm using Music Nomad Drum Polish and a micro fiber cloth. Let's see how these bad boys sound. Sounding pretty musical! Gonna crank the snare up a tad. Eff it.
That'll do! I'm aiming for the 12" and 18" to be octaves. Sounds pretty close! Just admiring the kit for a sec. I FORGOT TO PUT THE COWBELL UP!!! I'll never forget about you again little dude! :( Here's a look at the production for this tour. The video wall will fly up and sit between the two lighting trusses. Pyro Time to line check! Adding the 18" floor tom allowed me to tune the other drums up a bit more.
I feel like this is where they've wanted to live the whole time. I'm super happy with how the drums have sounded on this tour so far. No crew jam today :( I'm so sorry lol First video back...
The band needed to make some changes, so they obviously have priority. We still do it though, so don't worry. Waddup Dylan! Dylan is out main audio tech. You've met hiim before. HEYYYYYYY The one time I turn the cam off something crazy happens IDK what this part is called but it broke right off.
I've never seen this in my 25 years of playing drums. LOT'S of pyro on this one lol PTSD sets in... Time to rest lil guys. The ole' practice kit. Let's go eat food! It is now time for the catering segment. My original plan was to eat on the bus so I grabbed a to go container.
Flank steak kicked ass. We'll do a little Jasmine rice. Load up on the veggies. Green beans. Sure. Why not. You know your boy has to hit the salad bar... This little short cake thing was fire.
Pip showed up so I decided to eat with him on the patio. I forgot to get a drink. Woulda grabbed a DC 100% There were puppies today! They wanted nothing to do with me. :( Black Veil Brides tearin it up! Time for changeover! Time to wake up! You have a big show ahead of you! idk what theyre talking about on radio lol I had my in ears in.
Making sure everything is secure on the pedals. Let's see if they still sound good. Sounds good to me! A quick line check to make sure everything still works. Logan wanted a quick diddly What a tease. The boys get that fancy water now.
I obviously have never had it haha Spurs are tight. Check. We got these cool light boards for set lists. But i still have the lamp just in case the board dies. Grabbing a thumbnail These fans help with pushing the heat away from the kit and Luke. Double checkiing that all the hardware is secure. Five minutes to show! I'll go have a seat.
The guys have a really cool intro. A live camera follows them from the green room to the stage. GO FOR SHOW!!! It gets announced in our in ears, so you won't hear it on radio like normal. There's our boy! Very crucial fist bump. Lukes solo was tight tonight, but I forgot to turn on the gopro.
This is why he gives me his phone every night. So I can film clips for his socials. New cowbell rippin the band walks off stage after this song.
I clear his walkway for him so he doest trip on anything. Theres a whole live skit that plays on the LED wall and the band comes back out for the rest of the show. ...in cowboy hats haha So much fire, dude...
Every night I pray I get a hand that plays drums. Just blank stares... Wake up kids. It's time to go to work. Hell yeah! We got one! I've gotten so much better at deligating hands. Originally there was a part where the drummer sings. So Dylan would bring me a mic and stand at one point.
So we just stared at eachother confused during the show If I don't constantly remind hands to ONLY break the legs down... They'll take the whole stand completely apart. Never fails. These new cases have made my load out so much easier... I feel way more organized.
The other fork lift driver was jealous I skipped her. Who needs light anyways. Thank you all for watching! STF Crew YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO!!! Please like the video! And subscribe if you haven't already. Lot's of cool new experiences coming the rest of the year And i'd love it if you'd join me :) Until next time... PEACE!
