sped up or they looked like they were rushing their decisions they just have to slow things down and make sure that Nathan at the point is running things that they need in the sets they need same lineup for Cincinnati tonight as they had or this afternoon as they had against Northern Kentucky in their win on the road Conor Hickman stepping in for Dan skillings Jr who's still recovering from a knee injury Dongo feeds on with jackwood down low he's got the mismatch high off the glass in him that was a good bucket I would like to see onu would just take that right up don't drop it down and even give him a chance but he's a strong young man man puts it up in in at seven points and 11 rebounds against Georgia a week ago Vickman smothered by McCollum Cincinnati has an offense as that shot drops for James they're shooting 57% from the floor that's the second best team percentage in the country they got three guys averaging over 14 points per game they have so much production and then as Dylan Mitchell he's one of those guys in double digit figures he's looking really good if he can have a big day Cincinnati may take care of business as that one goes over and back and already three turnovers for Georgia Tech and here's one of them the steal from Dylan Mitchell and it starts with Mitchell he just gets over on witha pokes it away he's a little more athletic in that match up and slams it home dizzel James at point guard original five assists tonight looking for one Dylan Mitchell rattles out and by Dongo with the rebound first time we've called dango's name they got to get him going offensively he's missed a lot of close range shots but he causes a turnover there moving screen on Dongo and those are the things that Georgia Tech wants to see cleaned up like you said Dongo needs to get involved on offense he's big on the boards which we're going to be talking a lot about that rebounding battle so he needs to be big on both ends right there just got to set your well again his career at Butler last year at Cincinnati as we said shooting 70% from three in four games this season I'll be against lesser competition this is by far Cincinnati's stiffest test and Ballers everywhere you just got to go find them and a foul coming here it's going to be on vano one more look at Conor Hickman and you look at his trajectory at Bradley he went from a guy with modest minutes minutes as a freshman he was the most improved player in the Missouri Valley last year oh a huge influence to that team and Bradley he became went from being just a bench contributor and then ends up starting 30 plus games in his final year at Bradley and now he's playing in Big 12 you know especially with ciny now being a power Nate molls three-pointer won't fall and Dylan Mitchell with the rebound it's a first rebound for Cincinnati today score is not reflecting that right now no they're just not missing shots that was one area coach Miller was concerned and their win over Northern Kentucky was the rebounding and Conor hick this time from the left hand they're killing them off the dribble drive right now I mean Hickman's getting inside you're allowing lucous and Hickman to beat you in the paint right now and that can't happen offensively Jordan Tech has taking just two shots there's number three and it drops that's a tough bucket right there McCullum didn't think he had the three-pointers for Cincinnati it's tough to stick with that through the whole course of the game West Miller 3 and0 against ACC teams in his time at Cincinnati for Georgia Tech there was a silver lining that was the Collegiate debut of by Dongo and Nate George their two freshman phenoms who are now trying to take that next step as sophomores and we saw it firsthand last week that freshman of sophomore jump can be a challenge both Nate and VI struggled against Georgia it can be a challenge but it can also be a huge step in the right direction if you utilize it in the right way that's what they're going to try and do into this year speaking of debuts as Vendo hits the first free throw that was his first game playing for Cincinnati having transferred from Utah Valley where he was the whack Defensive Player of the Year and with that free throw now every starter has scored for Cincinnati and we talked about that first game as a bearcat for Beno and Coach Miller was like well yeah it was a first by many college basketball games under his belt he's very experiened and that's why I think as he just took a rest he's going to be very valuable in a huge part of this game and a great teammate too the early story for Georgia Tech's offense is turnovers they had five of them they've taken just three shots Jaden mustaf checking in for Georgia Tech freshman from buy Maryland missed a James and he's had a great open to his season he had to take a bigger role at the end of last year uh with day day out and to start the year coach Miller has been nothing but happy we're going to on the second put up a 50 spot but ultimately fell 7769 they're trying to avoid a slow start offensively today by the way you mentioned dday Thomas he's on the floor working on that foot injury playing measured minutes Ona Up and Under bandango and it won't fall those are the type of shots Jord Tech missed in the first half last week that was a beautiful move and it's rough that he didn't get missed this year and you wonder how do you score 19 points in one half and then 50 in the next well Lance Terry was the answer he attempted just one shot on Friday against Georgia in the first half didn't score he put up 20 in the second half and I think we're noticing that because he's feeling it and he's taking it to the rim as much as he can he's taking shots when they're available and he should I mean you're going to drop 20 and a half if I'm coach I'm saying hey do that as he great effort play there too and I think coach statamire really singled out Lance for his leadership there in the second half against Georg especially late felt like the outcome may already be decided but Terry continued to attack and C star talked about the mental makeup of his team as Cincinnati to turn it over Hickman lost his footing good pressure by Nate George yeah it was good pressure Hickman slides a little bit there that gets unlucky but hey now yellow jackets with a chance to turn the tide a little bit get they're already within 10 at nine get that lead a little bit lower start trying to hit your shots they' been pretty cold to start this game in the corner moof not a perimeter threat on Rua thought about pulling up 4 seconds on the shot clock George has to create for himself but hangs it high and it won't fall yellow Georgia Tech has the re rebound on the third opportunity on wua difference so far and now you're just down by seven and for all the things Cincinnati did well in their first road game of the season against Northern Kentucky rebounding particular the defensive obviously ER playing for one of the greats at UNC and seeing so much success there these are two amazing basketball minds and great players too they have played in some big games both trying to lead their programs to the in tournament since their arrival West Miller's gotten s to the NIT quarterfinals the last couple of years2 games this feels like it could be that first tournament team for the Beats under Miller it really does this program is such a good program just over the years under Miller but even before that and tongo battling and we've got a jump ball coming and it'll be Jord Tech basketball good job by Georgia Tech now possession arrow goes the other way so Cincinnati has that to keep in mind like I said work something out of the Baseline start to run some stuff now that you're out of the timeout you just got to talk to coach St me take the deep breath let's start seeing some shots fall here for Georgia Tech stop turning the ball over need those shots to fall we check with kick out three-pointer for wasy Reeves swirls down that's what they need if Reeves can get hot get going then this whole team will follow him with their first three games Ki Reeves led the ACC and three-point field goals attempted he was noticeably absent there in the second half against Georg as Dickman floats it down we talked to Coach tar about that felt like it was more the flow of the game he's still just as confident in kaasi Reeves as he was at the start of the Season another foul reaching in this one on Day Day Thomas yeah Day Day Thomas just getting a little bit aggressive there reaching in grabb the arm clear foul for the official but Thomas is working his way back I mean he had the injury at the end of last year and then he had a separate injury that extended the timeout so you know it takes time when you're not playing live ball you got to work your way back in no and Coach Miller mentioned he's got a future after basketball we got to do what's best for him and in some ways it might be best for Cincinnati in the long term as well well now you got jizzel James and see him what you have in him you're really happy McCullum racing down the lane throws it up to Dongo and there's two that worried me for a moment didn't know if they were on the same page but Dongo gets up there it's not an alley dunk but nice laying that's dango's first shot of the day and James throws it away saved by Bano and this will be a back court violation yellow jackets have cut it to seven starting to add some turnovers they now have four compared to seven for Georgia Tech so if they can get them to turn the ball over you know get a little bit more possessions Cincinnati shooting so well just keep the ball out of their hands you got you can't let them get lots of shots yeah of those seven turnovers for Georgia te offensively six then came in the first five minutes they've done a better job recently hanging on with the ball on their side Reeves trying to get past trying to break down around lucous and it won't go and that's the second time as amucha gets called on the foul there that they really with Terry just it's bounced out Ona had the one where you felt like he deserved the bucket that's two that just you wish you had four points there but hey that's ball it's going to sometimes not go your way still in very much in this one down south early reminiscent of some of the misses we saw in the first half against Georgia a ton of opportunities in the paint but you don't want to let that knock your confidence keep shooting keep doing that go to he hits it his father NFL Hall of Famer Eden James he kind of looks like a football player physically does I mentioned that to you in shoot around I he's built like a running back not not a point guard but hey when you're built that way that's what makes you a D1 point guard by tongo from the top of the key taking to the rim it'll go to the line and we will step aside Cincinnati still with a Saturday afternoon in midtown Atlanta little early basketball action normally this time of year it's all football for Cincinnati it's been all in the paint the Bearcats with 18 of their 23 points coming from down the lane and that's really where they've gone to attack so far Nick they really have I mean this team shoots 45% from three they can kill you just that way well right now they're getting into the paint they're driving in the turnovers are not helping Georgia Tech and Cincinnati if they can drive on you and get points in the paint and then hit threes right now they only have shot two three threes they haven't needed to so they're using their their point guards allowing them to drive in a lane allowing guys like Paige to set up in the paint so there's more ways than one that they can beat by Dongo at the line and in joria Tech's two losses they've really been beaten by twos it has not been the threes Georgia went just three of 18 and ofer in the first half and North Florida a team known for shooting the three they get most of their work done down in the lane as well and now by Dongo who's at the free throw line hits the second that's one area he's improved considerably these last couple of times out he's missed a couple today though it really has that's something if you're a big I think work on free throws all day long cuz I mean you look at Zach EDI last year got so many points at the line because he could draw fouls if you learn that you're going to double your points for game just off that James tries to get it to Josh Reed Reed going against O'Brien nowhere to go with it kicks it out and wide open and there's jizzel James it won't fall Betsy with the put back and here comes McCollum the other way George goes up and gets it they need George to get going he's someone who brings everyone up with them but Cincinnati moves quick in transition that was a point of emphasis for Jordan Tech they've got to get back on defense at that point you just kind of surrendered what was a really solid defensive possession and an easy two it's really tough because you get George getting a great bucket on one end like you said after awesome defensive play and now you let Cincinnati cancel that bucket out hacats have been denying the jackets attempts to drive in O'Brien weasles his way down the Baseline but he leaves it short little short but I want to see O'Brien take his chances more he's a big 68 Wing that can shoot threes he's a coach's dream Al attemp and there's another one turnning the rim black and blue Cincinnati and Dylan Mitchell now a 10-point lead and coach statamire wants a timeout the Bearcats their stiffest test of the season and so far they are dominating inside [Music] [Music] Dylan Mitchell with a earth shattering alleyoop here see jizzel James he had plenty of space Georgia Tech's guards aren't doing the best job of keeping them out Cincinnati's in this their bench is in this everyone loved it backto back lobs I mean they're feeling themselves right now and jizzel James like I said the guards for Georgia Tech aren't doing the best job of keeping Cincinnati out of the paint which allows James to take advantage he's a smart player sees that open space and utilizes it so he can open up his big man to get the alley Dongo trying to get open there against lucus he gets it but well outside the paint he'll try and back him down here comes the help and Dongo turns it over it's James and Mitchell will they go to the sky again yes and the Bearcats are raining Terror Dongo trying to answer and he has it swatted from behind and right now cincin exerting their will as Dongo wears one off the head he wasn't looking it is just not good right now for Georgia Tech everything's going Cincinnati's way tongo tries to take the charge they'll say it was a blocking foul inside the restricted area everyone's just got to slow down if you're the yellow jackets right now I mean Cincinnati the Bearcats are doing everything right right now you see the lob up Mitchell they're connected you can tell the chemistry between this team which is something we talked to Coach Miller about with all the guys returning and the depth guys he said it was just easier to get them all together to buy in together cuz you know they're returning which isn't always common in this day and age in college basketball so huge run right there for the Bearcats going into this season Cincinnati had nine returning players Dylan Mitchell was not one of them a transfer coming in from Texas at that big game against Yukon last year and hopefully he's not shaking up getting a little bit of attention as first free throw won't fall for Josh Reed trainer Bob manene in his 23rd season in Cincinnati eighth working with the basketball [Applause] [Music] team Reed playing in his hometown out of Pace Academy won a couple of state championships just 6 miles away from AAS Pavilion and now he's on the for gets to come home and play in his home City Atlanta born and raised set families in the area and that's what coach Miller said a bunch of Georgia Connections a lot of Georgia guys here for Cincinnati yeah three coaches on staff that either coached or played at the college level here in Georgia Nate George around the ACC loo has to push it back out 5 Seconds to shoot Reeves has to let it go and it won go batted back by O'Brien an offensive rebound for the jackets second chance look from Terry and it'll be Georgia Tech basketball great effort play honestly all over George at the end there to make sure it stays with Georgia Tech Luc O'Brien comboed there with Terry to keep everything in and get that initial offensive board back just got to keep fighting stay fiery stay aggressive that's something coach stod wanted to see more of see that fire in these guys y jackets have missed seven of their last eight shots George is going to get called for the push off another turnover for Georgia Tech that is 10 now and it's not a great formula for winning basketball games having 10 turnovers already in the first half and we have just under 5 minutes to play that's going to be the point of emphasis in the halim speach or at least a big part of it and in some ways Cincinnati may feel like they haven't taken full advantage of all those turnovers just 11 points off of them they've got the won't drop and it'll stay with Georgia Tech this feels quite similar to Jord Tech's last game where they're just struggling so much offensively difference is Cincinnati they shooting much better than what Georgia did that night they've over 55% from the floor as a team honestly right now now Yellow Jackets just need to see something go in at this point and Duncan pow draws the foul just checked in Cincinnati has to the state of Georgia eron Paige went to Wheeler high school about 15 Mi Northeast of Atlanta Pace Academy just 6 miles away from the yellow jackets campus and as you see Chad dollar an assistant at both Georgia Tech and Georgia and Coach Andre Morgan he played at Buford High School and also at Kennesaw State and North Georgia and we didn't have room on the graphic for Jaylen Stow who played at Mercer and is also on the Cincinnati staff so again Georgia ties everywhere and it makes sense because there is so much talent in this state yeah we mentioned St to coach Miller and he it's like how do he connect to Georgia and he forgot he played in Mercer against Miller when he was at UNCG and then after he graduated playing socon ball at mercery joined the staff coach Miller's had a lot of these guys with him for many many years and like I've said Cincinnati's program as a whole before Miller has been so well respected and continues in his tenure Duncan pal at the line hit his first free throw the second Falls in as well transfer from Sacramento State he did not play against Georgia Jord te trying to deploy some press they force a turnover Reeves goes up but he's blocked from behind by chizel James now Cincinnati can run lucos is on the other end that is so tough for Georgia Tech cuz they won that battle they did great job on the full court press got the set by vano colum slow to get up and there it is again I mean it's tough for vano the big body he planted the feet and colum just didn't have the eyes up and running into a brick wall it's tough yeah great play gets knocked down the momentum doesn't go his way hey I don't care other end I'm going to lace it Mitchell with a game high 10 first half points chizel James has space and lucos and Reeves battling and they're going to get no whistle will be out of bounds that was pretty physical on both ends I thought we might be getting a foul on lucous but no call there instead it just goes out another good effort play from Georgia Tech they're starting to Poke Balls loose you saw the Miss shot from jizzel James honestly with this defense they're just waiting for Cincinnati to cool down a little bit from the field be shooting 57% from the floor today over 40% from three an was spins and it won't fall I like that play though getting a pick opening things up and then as he goes towards the rim play that bounce pass off the pick and roll rather than just sending it straight into the paint digel James around the corner and Spins it in and James like we said built like a running back he lowers that shoulder he's hard to stop you got to stay upright on on him you got to move laterally really well to cut him off when he drives in like that but he makes it so hard 205 lbs coming downhill you haven't watched much Cincinnati or weren't with us earlier his father Edan James an NFL Hall of Famer and Lance Terry before he was able to Ricochet it off of James had his foot in the line and it's cool jizzel James where is name comes from he's actually a Junior and his dad passed jizzel on to him but he says jizzel is my Alter Ego it's not it's not who he is on a daily basis but when he gets on the floor that's when he's jizzel and that's when it's time to go and he becomes a baller so far six points four assists for chisel lucous he does not miss this man is automatic you saw that go off his face and you just felt like it was going in he's got a beautiful stroke gets enough space I mean you could give him barely any I feel like he'd still hit Final 5 Seconds the first got to get them going they really do and we talked earlier about that freshman to sophomore jump and for for Reeves it's in his senior year how can you step up to be that go-to guy for your team and George he runs the point he's got to be able to control this team and be a leader on the floor and right now all five players on the floor for Georgia Tech are in their first year with the program and been a crisp performance so far for the Bearcats great feed from lucous and and Taran Paige from point Blake finishes it this team is really good inside to out this definitely could be a team that gets West Miller to his first NCAA tournament they look really really good very early on in the season but first test is going well yeah year four now for Coach Miller he's taken Cincinnati to the NIT a couple of times Musta follows his own miss too strong but he will go to the free throw line he did take UNCG to a couple of tournaments in the Southern Conference but it seems like it's been a steady rise for Cincinnati here and they're one of six teams in the Big 12 ranked in the top 20 they've got three in the top 10 you got Kansas number one Iowa State five Houston seven this is a deep leag very deep the Big 12 is possibly the best in college basketball the ACC obviously who they're playing against right now very tough as well yeah there it is Arizona fell a Duke last night Baylor took a loss to Tennessee but Kansas Iowa State both undefeated entering play this afternoon how do you think that feels you're 18th in the country and you're the fifth or sixth best team in your conference well I think for Cincinnati after being picked 11th last year they're excited just we moved up in the preseason poll of their own league but I'm sure that's something coach Miller probably hadn't brought up too much not at this point in the season but he's got to be if not satisfied at least most ly satisfied with what he's seen from his group today lucous the net hardly moved I'm pretty satisfied with that I'm sure he is too lukosus you got a shooter like that taking it from Deep we've also got a guy who's two for two I mean from Beyond in Betsy these guys are [Applause] crazy and for B Dongo he's now got five points only taken four shots been a featured piece of the offense for Jordan Tech really ever since he started play him last season but hasn't gotten as many looks and Taran [Applause] Paige strong take Jaden moff and Paige gets it to go I thought we were going to be talking threes all game long but what's really stood out for Cincinnati is their ability to lower the shoulder and get into the paint and Luke O'Brien starting to find some space down there underneath but and Taran Paige just the latest Bearcat to have success down low Cincinnati with a we've talked so much about Cincinnati's offense today Nick but their defense has also been a strength early on this year and look coach Miller first one to tell us today their first real test they've played Northern Kentucky Nichols State Morehead State Arkansas Pine Bluff but regardless I don't care who you're playing those numbers are loud all top 10 in division one yeah like you said it doesn't matter who you're playing if you're putting up top 10 numbers in all of NCAA basketball you're doing pretty good they're great protecting the glass we've already talked about how they are around the rim that goes into that aspect and then holding opponents to just about 55 points per game something that they are nearly doing here against Georgia Tech it's a recipe for success I think one number that coach Miller is particularly proud of today is that they're even on the glass against the Jordan Tech Team where that's been a strength of theirs this year against Northern Kentucky they were outrebounded by 15 granted they also shot close to 60% so you know more shots you make the fewer misses there are PAL picks off the pass three on two Terry going in and he draws the foul I love Duncan pal he has been the spark Off the Bench that Georgia Tech needed they couldn't get anything going like I said they had the Spurt of steals in the second half but Duncan Powell has come in and done exactly what you just saw just effort plays getting offensive boards for for put back opportunities and just right there good positioning and taking a steal a severe injury for Powell his senior year in high school forc him to miss two seasons originally committed to Arkansas the injury put him at North Carolina a where he registered a year played a season transferred out to Sacramento State now here at Georgia Tech it was kind of a one-of a kind path is how he describes it back to the power four level it's a journey he really went on a journey to get back and credit to him for going through all of that to get back to this [Applause] level and he is the self-appointed Shag man as well that's a reference to his haircut seven to shoot dday Thomas to the Lane kicks it out bets he's got to let it go and air ball Dongo the rebound Here Comes Georgia Tech Jaden mustaf at the point guard position his first real run and a little out of control in transition Hickman gets Terry in the air and there it is that's why Cincinnati's so good they can take you off of any mistake and make you pay for it almost immediately mustaf has been good at the point as of late but like you said drive straight in kind of chaotically to the rack and then Cincinnati makes you pay at the other way and that is his game he is a dribble Drive guard Terry out to Luke O'Brien who's had some success here in
