apostles in and made them stand before the Sanhedrin the high priest questioned them we gave you strict orders did we not to stop teaching in that name yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and want to bring this man's blood upon us but Peter and the apostles said in reply we must obey God rather than men the god of our ancestors raised Jesus though you had him killed by hanging him on a tree God exalted him at his right hand as leader and savior to Grant Israel repentance and forgiveness of sins we Are Witnesses of these things as is the holy spirit whom God has given to those who obey him when they heard this they became infuriated and wanted to put them to death verbum Domini [Music] in there [Music] I would bless the Lord at all times Grace of him is always in my mouth in testimony whoever does accept his testimony certifies that God is trustworthy for the one whom God sent speaks the words of God he does not ration his gift of the spirit The Father loves the son and has given everything over to him whoever believes in the son has eternal life but whoever disobeys the son will not see life but the wrath of God remains upon him [Music] today we celebrate the 100th anniversary of mother Angelica's birth it's a great celebration for us here at EWTN and our Studios across the world and it's been wonderful to hear some of the employees sharing just beautiful stories about how they were touched by Mother Angelica maybe why they came here while they work here it's wonderful reflection in uwtn's programming on on mother's life and just some of my thoughts something that strikes me about her life that she had such a prophetic voice in the church that echoed really the themes of Vatican II they resonated in her loudly remember Vatican II you know is this was the intention right was to share the sacred deposit of Christian doctrine to be safeguarded John the 23rd said and taught in a more effective way to a contemporary world that people could hear it you know to present it a new there was a deep stirring in the church Pope Benedict the 16th wrote that to Proclaim to announce the gospel to pray Proclaim Christ to the contemporary man in all his struggles so there's a renewal an updating of the church in order to evangelize in order to evangelize to sanctify the world and interestingly Vatican II had a an address on women the role of women is said but the hour is coming in fact has come when the vocation of woman is being achieved in its fullness the hour in which woman acquires in the world of influence an effect and a power never hitherto achieved that is why at this moment when the human race is undergoing so deep a transformation women impregnated with the spirit of the Gospel can do so much to Aid Mankind and not falling women impregnated with the spirit of the Gospel I remember after mother's passing the local NPR affiliate did a a positive story about Mother Angelica they centered on her the fact that she was a woman you know starting the network in uh and battling for its existence and and all the obstacles she had to overcome and it it never occurred to me that how just that story appealed appear appeals to modernity and this emphasis on women and the culture Vatican 2 goes on to speak about these characteristics of women that are especially important today that they serve life that they console people present to people in the departure of death it says that they can humanize a culture that is racing ahead with new technologies and achievements and experiencing many forms of conflict that they can be peacemakers that they have a spiritual these are my words a spiritual maternity that women who like our Blessed Mother stand at the foot of the cross of human suffering to strengthen and intercede for others you know to be present to people and their suffering and I think mother had that quality such an extraordinary way due to her own sufferings in life you know being a product of divorce in a sense we could say she'd say she saw our father seven times that's a very modern experience in Family Life divorce and what it means in her age especially to grow up with a stigma of divorce in her the poverty that she and her mother and struggling to provide a living without the support of a father and a husband in the family and they gave her such a great compassion for other people's suffering and we saw that again and again in the show as she did EWTN live and or Mother Angelica live and and just people that came here to want to talk to her to share unburden themselves to her that compassion it seems like in the show oftentimes she could be doing this teaching and have a caller that expresses some suffering and it's like everything kind of came to a screeching halt that she was there for that person and had compassion for them Vatican II into consecrated virgins would say that in a world where egoism and the search for pleasure would become law be guardians of Purity and selfishness and piety that they especially model this and and witness to this call I was thinking of piety you know so much of the mass that mother wanted televise here on EWTN was to have reverence to point us to God to have this veneration of God to place God first and in doing that to have this mysterious fruitfulness to our life and we put the kingdom of God first all these other things will be added unto us that Jesus is the source of fruitfulness in our life today we hear in the first reading from acts Peter and the apostles are called in told to stop preaching and their answer is we must obey God rather than men okay it tells that to the religious leaders the Sanhedrin to put God first you know in an age that not only pushes God aside but has been said makes war on God today what we see at a frenetic pace we ought to put God first I think that was a continuous theme in Mother's teachings that the scriptures today tell us that we Are Witnesses of these things as is the Holy Spirit who God has given to those who obey him from the gospel that that Holy Spirit witnesses to the truth of Christ and is poured upon the whole church that all are called to evangelize I remember Mother Angelica telling us the brothers is where the Franciscan missionaries an eternal word that she wanted us to you know work with the people that come here to talk to them to hear their stories to help them and I remember one talk she gave us that you know a missionary maybe when they're traveling in an airport they shouldn't just sit in the seat you know in the lobby of the airport or whatever you should talk to people engage people share the faith I think about that every time I travel it's you know the the airport culture supports this witnessing you know walls come down you have easy conversations with people and I found it so true that we should feel this stirring to share what we have been given the good news that the Holy Spirit has been given to all he doesn't ration the spirit he's not God's not miserly with his spirit he pours that Spirit upon the entire church he fills the church with charisms to build up the body of Christ and it flourishes when we put Jesus at the center of our lives and I think that's part of the call why mother was raised up to do this work she's a poor Claire Perpetual adoration she's a cloistered nun and yet their life witnesses to the whole world in a very concrete way to put Jesus first they have adoration you know as part of their daily schedule it Witnesses us all that maybe we don't as a lay person have time to go to church and spend time literally in adoration but certainly to put Jesus at the center of our life that God does not ration his gift to the spirit that is poured upon the whole church that all are called to Holiness it's a great theme of lumengencium the document on the church religious and laity and Priests all are called to Holiness all are called to love Jesus this is the foundation of her life as a nun she would wear a wedding ring speaking of her betrothal to our Lord how many times did she say that with this show just echoing that call of Vatican too that we're called to be saints that it's really possible whatever state in life that you're in and of course she herself was most definitely a Spirit-filled woman in the 70s one of the sisters describes it the community experienced a Pentecost you know a priest had prayed over mother and then they prayed over the sisters and there was this fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon her that her talks and many books just took on a a greater energy in life with new insights the scriptures were opened up to her and that that word the scripture renews the church it renews our lives and we meditate upon that remember she sold fishing lures raised eleven thousand dollars to come down by the property to build this modest the monastery in 61 it was dedicated and to keep it going by roasting peanuts and then to rely completely on Divine Providence in 1981 she you know started the network went on the air and you know the idea started with she had 200 bucks in the bank and a foundation for a garage today after 42 years EWTN is available in 408 million homes 160 countries radio internet print media a news Department 200 bucks and the foundation of a garage right 12 sisters and she began with Incredible faith and trust in Jesus trust in his Divine Providence and that's what she says the message not what was done but how it was done trusting on our Lord and faith who does that unless you're driven by the Holy Spirit at 58 years old to start a global television network and it started slowly didn't start as a Global Network where I started four hours six hours eight hours eventually 24 then when International but that she had that Fidelity and following God's will in her life and always radiating this heart for the people to teach the scriptures and she began with local groups here that were you know involving all denominations she would give Bible studies at a local Episcopalian Church here in Birmingham to teach the beauty of the church which in a Time and I think this is should always be remembered that after the council was a time in many ways of of confusion people ask us why do you have Latin in the mass and the council directed his document of liturgy said that the Latin language is to be preserved in the Latin rights John Paul II Benedict the 16th spoke the importance of the use of Latin she very much could see the need for a better translation of the missile that had more sacral language more you know language with greater reverence 2010 we had that translation I think she was prophetic and all of that and two the Primacy of the vertical dimension of the mass where you know as often spoke of as a just a meal this horizontal influence which is certainly part of it but it's both and first and the mass were entering in the prayer of Jesus to his father that first is truly a sacrifice offered up by the son to the heavenly father the sacrifice of his life represented every Mass and then to receive him truly present really present in the Eucharist and to emphasize adoration poor Claire is a Perpetual adoration Saint Augustine would say we do not consume what we do not first adore that that adoration leads us to communion prepares us for communion it makes the mess more meaningful and yes the mass builds up the body of Christ and incorporates us into his mystical body the communio of the church that we are united together in Christ not apart so he is the focus he is Central he's first and again I think mother God raising up a poor Clair nun Perpetual adoration to do this gives us that message that Jesus is at the heart of all of it another had a prophetic voice and simply being a nun a religious the family Spirit she offered she fostered in her communities our emphasis on personal prayer the importance of that our emphasis on loving Jesus that this whole network is done out of love for Christ that we are to seek his will and that's that's primarily how we express our love for Jesus it's not identified with maybe great powerful feelings we have or great words that we might have to say but are we obedient to him are we obedient to his voice and our life and she would emphasize that we find that that will we hear his voice living in the present moment at all times that's where we encounter Jesus not in the regret of the past or the fear of the future but right here right now it is God want us to do to focus on him in the now we do that we seemingly can can bear anything you know I get stirred up and all my wreckage of the future that I think about might happen usually doesn't stay in the present moment that's where we find strength that's what we receive Grace and living a sacramental life how often did mother talk about going to mass spending time in adoration and going to confession going to confession and she'd get upset if if the priest was ever an impediment to someone going to confession look out that we are we are to confess our sins receive his grace and she'd say you know go grab a pizza after celebrate God Has Lifted the burden from us removed our guilt or no nothing else no one else can do that in our life not a therapist we can't drown it out with endless activity pleasure thrill seeking we still have that guilt unless we turn to God and confess our sins to be renewed there's Grace in that sacrament to strengthen us in our fight against sin the religious sister and especially images the church as bride totally given over to her spouse dependent and trusting in Him models the Holiness of what the church is to have so that's I think why God called her other she's a model of that Holiness that trust and dependence on God and at the same time mother had such as I mentioned a heart for the people a compassion towards the suffering and this is the lens which I see or that I always come back to growing up in the 70s and 80s that who speaks for the Sheep who speaks for the sheep that are suffering in this culture you know in an era of the church especially after the council will we're fought where false doctrines interpretations were put forth you know she was speaking for the people that were suffering EWTN started you know in this Blasphemous movie was shown on television the word and she started her own network to get the truth out there and yes there is attention at times between those who have received charisms and the church's hierarchical structure the church is to guide to Foster those charisms given but we see in people that receive charisms this holy restlessness to do what God's put on their heart to do and sometimes there's tensions there but thank God people have responded with the gifts they've been given by the Holy Spirit you know it's so vital today even more to proclaim the truth the truth of Jesus Christ what he taught a moral life how we are to live because it's liberating and it gives hope that there's a way out of the suffering that people experience especially due to the sexual Revolution that seems to be Global and this Fallout on the world to proclaim a truth that the world mocks the church is teaching about sexual morality and ethics we see the breakdown of the family the hookup culture sexual confusion to have to know to hear a truth that there is a way out gives hope and yes it's challenging and yes we can't live it without Grace but if we don't Proclaim that truth people don't have hope because they feel like they're they're stuck in the suffering of secularism how important it is to get that and to Proclaim that truth to get it out there there is a way out Jesus does offer us real liberation and yes it's a struggle I I think back you know some things that strike me about our life that I remember being a young postulant and hear her talk about her anger her struggle with anger and everything okay mother we get it you've said that before right but it's consoling to me today when you realize after you're at it for a while that sometimes these faults don't go away overnight she struggled with her own you know things that her own faults and it might be a struggle for us too to grow in consolation and two also I think another great theme of life is the value of Redemptive suffering we could be tempted to run from suffering at all costs and she the whole of her life you know had suffering we talked about you know the divorce and things the breakup of our family but her back pain her asthma you know various illnesses digestive stuff she had to struggle with just you know just all kinds of things and I think it was so extraordinary about her was her willingness to suffer for the Lord to take this on and there's many beautiful quotes in Raymond's book and on the website that how she saw her sufferings to help others to help the church in this time the willingness the willingness to embrace suffering that that's extraordinary and God brings a mysterious fruitfulness out of the lives of these women religious that Suffer Well the church teaches that there's a mysterious fruitfulness to their life EWTN continues today made up of viewers employees the EWTN family continues the mission of Mother Angelica together and she very much wanted to create a family through EWTN and also the people coming here to make shows that they're enlivened by the spirit filled with the Holy Spirit and they they bring that Spirit to EWTN that's so important I have the privilege being here and doing some travels with the network to meet many people that watch pilgrims come here to hear their stories I love to hear their stories met a gentleman just the other day who he lost his wife back in September she had a form of palsy palsy and a growing paralysis last nine years of her life and he talked about how God was good to them and how the network helped them and to me that's the most incredible thing you can say if the network helps someone in carrying their Cross or being a consolation to them or proclaiming that truth that is liberating we've served our our mission in so many ways that this is real if it speaks to people in the most desperate situations has something to say into that reality the network has a mission and has a value and importance I was in Ethiopia a couple months ago I met people there that watch EWTN that's powerful to me I have a guy come up and say hey Father Mark Ethiopia I met people here that from India from Europe from South America from the Philippines I watched
