About the new OLED iPad Pro M3

600 600% that's a that's a very welcome upgrade 13in display curved edges the new design that sounds crazy right the one feature that Apple knows can still draw users to the pro and yeah I think it's great and at this point like the biggest limiting factor again remains ladies and gentlemen welcome to the second episode of our brand new show here at phone Rena which still doesn't have a name which I think is totally fine yes at this point the nameless podcast that's the name we should probably settle with this but yeah so far no name my name is Vic and Brad so welcome to the second episode just quick recap first episode was about the Appo Vision Pro yep must see so watch it very exciting new product probably the product that might replace the smartphone somay someday someday but not right now definitely not now but there is another product which had a bit of a quiet year in 2023 yep but is now up to make a grand comeback which is the iPad right that's true we are expecting two big new announcements for the iPad we have the iPad Pro and the iPad Air and first the launch was expected to happen in March but then some delays happened at least when it comes to the leaks and rumors uh speculations were that to see it in March even dates were floated some people some analysts said March 26th that obviously didn't happen then April and now we have a what seems to be the final release date not official yet but coming from a pretty good source Mark German from Bloomberg says new iPads are coming on May the 6th which is pretty soon so which one are you more excited about the iPad Pro or the iPad Air well if you put this way of course the pro because it's rumored to have that new design all at displays I like the promotion stuff High refresh rates but then again the pro is already kind of an expensive you know tablet that's true and it's rumored to get even more expensive now with the new special special feature that's coming on uh so the air it was kind of like the the the iPad that looked like the pro but it was you know not quite there but still more expensive so everyone bought that so yeah but definitely the pro I think that that's the the most interesting one definitely that's the more exciting model of the two but the iPad Air is also getting a pretty good refresh and maybe we should just step uh a little bit a little bit backwards and take a look at what happened in the past few years for iPad so 2023 no no updates with the iPads whatsoever and that was probably the first year ever since the Inception of the iPad that we didn't get a new model right and that was because Apple was busy doing other things we already mentioned the Apple Vision Pro and that was clearly the biggest Focus so the Apple Vision Pro was announced in 2023 but only arrived in February of 2024 and there was another big project that I wanted to mention that Apple was working on and we recently heard that that that was also cancelled that was the Apple killed forever and probably for the better because for the better yeah it's a very difficult market and apple seem to realize that it effort efforts are going nowhere so anyway back to 2022 that's when the last big update happened to the iPad Pro but probably big is not the right word the last update the last update so what you see right here is an iPad Pro from 2021 in its bigger version 12.9 in and that was the first iPad that got a mini LED display yeah which is a slightly upgraded version of the regular LCD screen that that most iPads these days have and the benefit of that maybe how quickly go through go over that the benefit of mini LED is that you get many more uh discrete lights that are packed into different zones so you get a far better dynamic range and brightness and it was kind of like comparable to OLED basically right or that that was the whole point here with the mini with the mini right so it's a different technology it's still kind of LCD based it doesn't use the organic light emitting diodes that OLED is known for but I think rad is a big fan of this technology because it looks very similar to an allet screen uh I mean the dynamic range and the only issue the bigger issue is uh the kind of when you look at the screen uh in very dark scenes then you notice a bit of blooming what's called and you don't have that on an ol that screen yeah and then the other thing is the 11in one like it never got the miniet displays right true stuck with IPS that was exclusive to only the bigger model right and now the new iPad Pros B the 13 in drum roll both the 13in and the 11 in are getting OLED screens W nice so uh yeah that's that's good news and just wanted to quickly recap so back in 2022 we had we got the M2 Chip inside the iPad Pro and in 2021 the big upgrade was the mini LED screen and now both are getting ol that both iPad Pros are also getting a new M3 chipset Y and maybe we should just get into it what else is new and why should people upgrade right and I believe uh one of the biggies here is a new design right so this thing hasn't been redesigned from what 2018 which is six years six years ago I mean it's a beautiful wonderful design but it's he been here like for a lot of time and probably we're hearing Apple has something really great in store they're going to make it even thinner than that that's already a pretty thin design it's around 6 mm thick and rumors are that you it will go down to even further to 5 mm so this will become very very thin uh impressively so hopefully also lighter yeah because the iPad nowadays like the magic keyboard was like a successful experiment right people are buying these yeah and are using them but what's the trouble with that you put your big ass iPad into the magic keyboard and it suddenly weighs as much as a MacBook Air it does even more it does and especially uh when you look at the 13inch form factor now you can probably see a bit of uh Rad's MacBook Pro which is a 14in model but just look at that the size is pretty similar it's almost the same so uh not a huge difference and if you close the iPad and you see it becomes quite thick with the magic keyboard so I guess that new design which is supposed to be even Slimmer than that hopefully also lighter I think actually that's a that's a very welcome upgrade to the iPad Pro yeah that's one of the bigger upgrades and uh we should also mention that this is not just any kind of OLED technology that is coming here so that's probably one of the reasons why this iPad was delayed this is an OLED screen but not a regular one it's what is called a dual stack old or double layer double layer double two two stack all it yeah yeah so basically the idea is you have kind of two panels stacked on top of each other and this way they can work to achieve uh the same brightness at a much lower power consumption so they're much more efficient maybe I guess the the rumors or the the space that we have which probably won't apply exactly one to one with the iPad but from maybe some of the phones that we've seen yeah with the Dual layer AMOLED what was it like 40% more efficient that's that's a good point you're bringing I just wanted to quote we had one phone that is already that already features this technology from a brand called honor in China and I'm just going to read a quick excerpt from our article about that phone and probably you can find the link in the description to this video as well so 600% Improvement in screen dur durability which probably refers what 600 600% which probably refers to the probability of getting ghosting bur burning yeah exactly so the burning chances of burning is reduced significantly and then you have a very significant 40% increase in power efficiency which is definitely a good thing to have but then on the other side so this was probably why the iPad was delayed this is new technology takes time to scale it up but then the other uh thing is that this new technology also costs big money and the rumors say that the price could increase by nearly $160 up to $200 so that's a pretty big price increase don't you and and and like the 11in iPad Pro currently it already started what is it $800 yeah dollar so we have $800 for the 11in iPad Pro $1,100 for the 13 in that's the current pricing so this could go to$ 1,000 for the small one for the small one and what is it300 for right so the the bill becomes quite steep so how does that compare to like suddenly as a proposition um how does it compare to the to just getting like a MacBook Air for example which has the 13in display yeah modern new high resolution curved edges the new design it has already a keyboard a large trackpad yeah what do you think that's that's great comparison because uh I'm not a big iPad User but recently I started using this iPad a lot more and um now you notice there are some drawbacks but in many ways the 13in iPad you would buy it as laptop replacement cuz you you need to get a keyboard the 13in size is just too big to hold comfortably to enjoy media so most people would probably buy it as a replacement for their laptop right uh and uh the price here kind of stacks up because the base model comes with 128 gigs of storage which probably is not enough for most people now in comparison the MacBook comes with 256 GB so already right laptop standard which is not also not a lot but if you want to match that you're looking at currently at $1,200 and then you need to get the keyboard in order to have the full laptop experience and the magic keyboard cost $350 so currently yeah the price comes to $1,550 and then you have a Macbook here an M3 MacBook Air which cost $1,100 so uh the iPad Pro is much more expensive uh and you still have iPad OS on it so it is still a limited OS in many ways it's gotten better but still limited so the and now with the new iPad this cost of the whole package grows to around $1,700 probably or even more who's going to buy this thing it's a uh we're proposition I mean yeah and all of a sudden like if you close that with the keyboard and everything it's pretty much as thick as a as the MacBook if not thicker yeah ways as much or even more yeah and okay it's it's a versatile the whole point of the the iPad Pro at this point is it has it gives you a degree of Versatility that the MacBook supposedly cannot because you can detach it from the keyboard then okay it's all of a sudden it's 700 gram around there maybe and you can take it everywhere to the bathroom with you and so on and you can use put it on the table and you can draw on it notes and all that stuff but at that point with that kind of pricing strategy does it even make sense all of that versatility yeah apple is kind of trying to build up iPad OS we've seen it added Final Cut Pro yeah some more PR grade apps are coming but the experience is still not quite the same as on a Macbook so it would be interesting to see and there's a very interesting fragmentation when it comes to the capabilities of the iPad and the Mac MacBook because for example on the iPad you have the advantage of being able to touch the screen which the Mac never has and probably never like at least in the foreseeable future it won't get it uh so you have that and you have a couple other uh additional things like for example this here apple pencil which remains a unique accessory to the iPad experience so that is one selling point of the iPad it is and even if you get it like a touchcreen on the Mac you'll never be able to use the pencil in the SC way right you need to put the display lay down on the table so you can take notes you can draw or whatever you want to do so for creatives the iPad Still Remains kind of like um the only game in town especially if they want to be in the APPA weico system uh okay so this brings us to the next topic which is that we not not only get the new iPad Pro but we Al also get the new accessories so first we get a brand new magic keyboard which is long overdue and we also get a new Apple pencil so maybe just get the new Apple pencil out of the way first this is the apple pencil second generation as you can see it has this indentation snaps on top of the iPad quite convenient uh but in terms of functionality apple is adding something new to the apple pencil three which is a squeeze gesture okay so uh last year Apple added a double tap gesture to the apple pencil which allows you to quickly quickly switch between tools and now with this squeeze gesture you probably be a able to customize it and uh do some gestures for example you you should be able to start writing a new text field by squeezing the apple pencil so this one is not going to get the squeeze right it's just for the new one guess that that is what leaks say and that is what Apple would typically do it adds new functionality and this probably requires new hardware to squeeze functionality and also the new one that recently launched which was the pencil USBC Edition it also doesn't have the squeeze right exactly yeah so the squeeze would be a brand new functionality coming to the apple pencil 3 and we're yet to hear if the apple pencil 3 will cost more than the $130 that apple is currently asking it might but it would probably be a smaller price bump compared to compared to the magic keyboard maybe or the magic keyboard now probably you can tell us a bit more about the magic keyboard upgrade because that seems to be a quite exciting upgrade for is an exciting like the magic keyboard as a whole has been an exciting accessory to the iPad um like it's coming was long overdue I I almost felt like apple was like okay guys there it is your touch your touchpad and your keyboard in one for the iPad now it can you can make it look like almost like a laptop you wanted it here it is and people bought it actually I think I've seen a lot of people using these and it looks really cool you know the iPad is kind of floating in space has that Apple yeah floats in space magnets looks very minimalist apple design language it's great it's great um and the keyboard is actually pretty pretty decent uh typing experience the touchpad yeah also great it has that Apple extreme low latency stuff but it's but the obvious drawback to it is it's tiny it's really tiny compare this to the MacBook compared to the MacBook like one tiny trackpad that's ridiculous and and now for the new second generation uh magic keyboard that is rumored to come along with the new iPads one of the things apple is uh said to be uh bringing to the table is larger trackpad how much larger I don't know but that's going to be one of the updates that's a good update what was another one is it I think there is rumor to have a function row key yeah and that was missing because for some common uh actions that you want to do like reduce the brightness tweak the brightness or the volume you need that uh function roll which you have on the MacBook and you don't have it here and you also don't don't get the Escape key which is driving me nuts on the iPad you don't have an Escape key and you're probably going to get that uh yeah and the other thing that uh is also exciting some rumors claim that this new attachment that this new magic keyboard will also be made of aluminum that's not a certainty it's a possibility but that would make for a much more premium look to the iPad even closer look to a Macbook experience at this point basically the iPad is morphing into a MacBook with a different operating system and yeah that's exciting to see what what what we'll see in yeah I think it's great and at this point like the biggest limiting factor again remains iPad OS yeah iPad OS is is probably not changing fast enough it cannot keep up with the demands of iPad User because apple is going to do the magic keyboard only when it sees that people want to use these devices but they also want to want to use them like laptop Replacements right yeah and to be a legit laptop replacement it needs to have certain things that been developed like for decades now on desktop systems like the mac and the iPad is new operating system it does have them yeah uh so and they're trying to remedy the situation you mentioned uh Final Cut they released it on the iPad they released I believe logic pro if I'm not mistaken for serious you know music making it has the Venture resolve also and many other sort of it has at this point it has Photoshop it has Lightroom the Adobe things so everything's on here but there's still something about it that isn't quite you know I don't know what it is is it the efficiency of how it works or multitasking experience is probably still not yet there and apple is in a weird place uh with iPad OS because first it's still has the the iPad Mini it has the 11in iPad it has the uh iPad as a media Machine versus the iPad as a laptop so it kind of split between those two realities and it kind of has to serve both users and I guess that's probably part of the reasoning why uh it keeps improving but uh those people who want to use their iPad as a laptop will find that the Improvement comes too slow while the other users they don't really care too much about those improvements really because you're just using it for media there's like a very broad spectrum of iPad users right because in all of the iPads they run iPad OS yeah and so you have the the base iPad just the standard the 10 gen one yeah you have the mini you have airs and then you have Pro and so it's a really large spectrum and for someone like younger younger person they would probably take it get some not taking on on it with the pencil they'll get a base iPad and it still runs iPad OS and the pro which is the magic keyboard that laptop replacement style of usage it also has the same OS yeah I would imagine that that's why apple is still late to fix that that whole situation yeah and I don't know if it can even fix that because because it comes with limitations right right right so it would be really exciting to see what gets announced at wwc in June because that's when we expect the new iPad OS 18 to be unveiled and of course it will roll out to devices in late September so it will be sometime before we see that new version but we're only talking about the iPad Pro and I Al also wanted to touch upon the iPad Air which is the other big announcement and that is exciting because we're finally getting the iPad Air two sizes we're getting a small 11in model which we had which is just up upgraded and we're getting a brand new bigger size sort of a 13in size slightly smaller than than 13 in and that means that you're now getting this U iPad as a laptop experience at a lower price point so currently uh let's take a look at the pricing the iPad Air currently starts at $600 okay the 11 in model so that price might increase a little bit but we don't expect to see a huge price bump it's not getting the OLED displays it doesn't get the more most expensive component the olet screens and it's going to have a cheaper Pros it's still going to be upgraded right the M2 but it's not the M3 that's going to go into the pros yes so the the air is getting the M2 and the big question is will it get more storage because currently the air still starts at 64 gigs which is embarrassingly yeah but for I guess for people who are just using it to watch videos on YouTube it's fine sure it's also like U Apple's apple way of getting more you know of making you pay for storage right because it's 64 embarrassingly low amount of storage but then you can jump all the way to 256 yeah that's a big jump there is no Midway point which most people would want so basically if you need storage yeah any storage you have to get the 256 one right yeah which is a costly upgrade $150 on top to get that higher storage tier so yeah and in terms of new features on the iPad Air no OLED screen we mentioned the new chipset but also uh no promotion so the iPad Air remains stuck at 60 Herz which I find uh promotion that is annoying but I find the promotion to be super uh like one of the features I enjoy using the most on the iPad Pro and that is the one feature that Apple nose can still draw users to the pro and it is not easily uh it won't give that away either for sure and we see that also with the iPhones the iPhone 15 the the regular model still stuck at 60 Herz because everyone knows that the smooth experience is kind of the one of the few things that it has that can kind of draw people to those more expensive iPads I bet Apple also knows that's one of the features that is that like Tech savy users and pro users are really into and they notice the difference absolutely whereas there's this strange situation where I've talked to many people who are not so like T Savvy let's say just more regular consumers and they're like oh I didn't even notice it yeah like the difference between the refresh rate which is very weird to my eyes because like it's almost like a different type of product comparing like promotion versus 60 HZ yeah it's a whole different Universe it is and then someone says oh yeah yeah uh I didn't even notice it which very strange to me yeah for someone who is spending a lot of time uh using their devices this is a feature that really matters and for people who are not that invested in the experience not so much I think Apple knows this and is using it to its Advantage yeah yeah at least though one thing that's rumored to be fixed finally in the iPad and I believe it's a rumored both for the pros and the new airs is the placement of the webcam so what we have right now is that the front camera on the iPad Pro is on the short side so when you place the the iPad as a laptop and this orientation it uh it is really weird and the camera belongs on the longer side at the top it doesn't look good like if you want to use it as a laptop replacement you're going to want to make like C online c on it and then it looks really weird on those yeah and I guess Apple finally realized that if you're going to use this as a laptop replacement which most people will that is the main use case so that is one more uh confirmation that for 13in laptops uh sorry for 13in tablets and also probably for the 11in this use case is becoming more and more prevalent so many more people are using it I just wanted actually to add something here which is a a statistic I heard somewhere is uh when Samsung was asked about how many people are buying the keyboard with its largest tablet which I believe is 14 in the percentage was really high above 70% okay so it means that most people who buy the larger size tablets are using them kind of as a laptop so which once again proves that placing the camera at the top the the long side the right decision right one thing that prevented it from doing so so far was like because you put the pencil on here right and it attaches magnetically charges from here so I think I've heard that this is one of the things that hasn't allowed to put the webcam right here because you need the components for the pencil to work so probably going to move somewhere else where exactly I don't know or maybe Apple can sign somehow change the magnets and the location probably that's why we have a redesign of of the whole thing because first with the thinner allet panel you can get the thinner uh body yeah and now this is an opportunity to also tweak other things inside the design which hasn't changed in six years so that's a that's a perfect uh uh opportunity for Apple to do that what I don't think will'll be changing is we still get the same excellent sound quad speakers on the iPad Pro maybe slight improvements but I guess this will stay and this will be interesting if the apple pencil moves to the side this could be an issue with the speaker so I don't see that happening right and one other rumor is that if we get a new magic keyboard it might have a slot for the apple pencil somewhere here or some that would be convenient that would be pretty cool and right now you see that when you close this and you have the magnetic connection and it's really EAS you bump it somewhere the pen goes absolutely and so if the pen can go in a dedicated slot or Silo much like the uh Galaxy S Series now do uh this would be a pretty elegant solution I think yeah yeah yeah for sure makes sense all right so let's jump to our next topic and probably the final one which is what is happening to the other iPads so we have the iPad Mini so we have the regular iPad for a second I was what other iPad I mean we talked about the air about a pro yeah there's actually an iPad Mini yeah which is fairly popular with some people so and there's a successor coming at some point and then we also have the base iPad as far as we know though new models not coming soon not coming soon but still expect new models to arrive at some point obviously and that would be the earliest around the end of this year right and pro possibly even uh they could the launch could stretch into next year 2025 right because the base iPad already has the webcam in the right place right and it already kind of has the new design so uh what else can you tweak on the Basse iPad uh it's the the the only thing that Apple could do is probably add a slightly faster chip set and the price is low so I will tweak the price a little bit because at some point it like it closes in on the air price and that doesn't make too much sense with it because I I don't know anyone who like go for the base iPad compared to the air right it's similar prices so so the weird thing about the base iPad pricing is that right now Apple keeps two models available for sale so it has the 10th Generation which is sold for slightly more than $400 as far as I can remember and then has the ninth generation one which is a pretty old iPad but that one is still sold for $330 which is pretty affordable and it could keep the same strategy going forward it could keep kind of the iPad 10th Generation as a cheaper model and introduce an 11 generation at around $400 so we could still have two base iPad models and as for the mini uh again well not much to tweak there new chipset refreshing it to become slightly faster and fixing one issue that was kind of a commonly mentioned with the iPad Mini which was a strange wobbly jelly effect when scrolling around which was due to the positioning of the olet screen on the iPad Mini Apple might tweak the design andix does it have an OLED screen oh my bad screen but it's not mini Le right just normal IPS display it's a good IPS display but it's it's an IPS display but it's ANP not right yeah yeah and so that's what's new on the iPad front one last thing to finish this off a foldable iPad o that sounds crazy right it makes sense though to me at least I think it makes more sense at this point compared to a foldable iPhone phone okay so I really dig the idea of having like maybe 11 in or maybe 12 13 in iPad that folds in half and becomes something like a like a iPad Mini in terms of the footprint because you can really easily take this with you in a normal bag uh so I like the idea although if I have to bet money on it I don't think it's ever happening well rumors are that if it happens it's still a few years in the future uh and uh one thing that Apple like again this comes from Mark Gman from Bloomberg uh he says that if Apple cannot make this without eliminating the crease which is that like bump in the middle you folded basically in the middle yeah uh if it cannot eliminate the crease from this foldable supposed iPad it won't ever launch it why is that though is it just because you know Apple polish Perfection style or that's probably one thing but the other thing is that I think many users who want an iPad are also creatives and Apple has the apple pencil which uh is a pretty unique accessory and when you have that crease right in the middle that would interfere with the apple pencil experience with the drawing experience yeah would be one other thing to because the pencil is a central use case for the iPad right right right yeah I think so but um doesn't the fold the Samsung fold have um an Spen as well it has right yes absolutely supports one yeah it's also has the crease but it has the crease I guess for Samsung that's okay uh and we've seen other foldables from other companies which have reduced the crease to U almost non-existent it's still there but barely visible uh so they use different technology for the hinge to in order to achieve that so that's also a Poss ability but uh we'll have to see and I actually wanted to uh disagree with you a little bit about uh you said you're more excited about a foldable iPad I would say that maybe I would be more excited about a foldable iPhone just because it would add something fresh to the to the lineup and uh we don't know if that's happening but rumors say actually that it's not there's like the only possibilities for flip style iPhone far off in the future but so do you envision it like a flip or a fold I would prefer it to be a fold because of the added functionality but right now rumors say that apple is uh considering a flip design but it is a very distant possibility in in the far off future better buy an iPad and a phone and the Apple Vision Pro and The Vision Pro and a Mac right well uh let's get all things Apple yep thanks I think that was a wrap for today's episode everything on the new up and cominging iPad pros and iPad Airs it's a good time to end it it's a good time to end it hope to see these devices actually launch on the market in about a month yeah so yeah thanks for watching see you next time expect to see the full reviews on phonearena.com yep see you in the next one
