'REAL' MINIMALISTS DON'T OWN TECH

'REAL' MINIMALISTS DON'T OWN TECH

Show Video

a while back I got a comment on my channel  that I'm only actually using as a sort of   topical debate for this video because it did  actually despite me not really fully agreeing   with it it did really bring to the Forefront  of my mind not in the sense that they meant   which I'm about to tell you so a while back I  got a comment that said that real minimalist   didn't use Tech or even further still electricals  now that just blew my mind it blew my mind and   at the time I did just think how ridiculous you  know everybody is entitled to their own opinion   if you do think that great for you but my personal  opinion was that it was ridiculous because we live   in a modern society there are definitely some  things that I enjoy about modern conveniences   while still I can appreciate some of the more  Simple Times of not having electricals but they're   definitely a lot of the things timesaving now I  started to think about whether the person because   they wasn't that specific meant just technological  equipment or things that we use for entertainment   or even further still Things Are around the home  and I started to really imagine what a home would   look like without any electricals I started  thinking about all the electricals that I use   every day and how much time would be taken up if I  didn't have those electricals anymore but to begin   with what I have actually been thinking about  after this person said this to me was the tech   that I have because as a lot of lovely people did  support me in the comments and said was well hold   on a second she makes videos you know she works  online there are she's going to need a laptop   she's probably going to need a phone probably  a camera so you know they they three things   already but what I did actually start thinking  back to was in the early days of my channel I   did just use an iPhone and sometimes I find S  missing that Simplicity because you can just   get it out whenever turn it on and record a video  like what I've been discussing really in the last   couple of videos but as somebody who is very very  interested in film making and video making and has   a little bit of a background in it I enjoy quality  as well and that's what was mentioning you know a   few videos ago I'd like to balance that sometimes  do low F quality sometimes do high quality quality   and my new camera you know my newish camera that  I got sort of around what 6 months ago now I'm   really enjoying playing around with it I love the  fact that because I do live in a very dark home   it has natural lighting abilities you know to open  the aperture make it appear lighter when it isn't   and in a way that actually cuts down on some of  the equipment that I need and allows me to be more   minimal in a broader spectrum of the things that I  earn for instance now you know I've never had one   but I don't now have a need to ever have one of  these big lights that people have on their faces   because it's so small because I went for one that  wasn't completely ridiculous and needs like loads   of different lenses by ridiculous I don't mean  the people that have those lenses are ridiculous   I just mean for my own personal needs I wanted one  that was practical didn't need loads of lenses and   that I could easily carry around discreetly if  I want to start vlogging outside and that does   doesn't weigh a lot you know we've seen people  holding these massive cameras I definitely don't   want to have to do that it got me thinking about  all my tech so as you all probably have seen I   have this box of personal possessions that are not  clothing now as you're about to see about 2/3 of   that is Tech and even if you count just the tech  items themselves the thing is to go with that Tech   there's other stuff to go with it charges and  things and I started to think about the comment   ringing in my head of what this person had said  and I started to think well actually if I only did   go back to having an iPhone which I know there are  minimalists out there that do you would not even   have a need for this whole tub now don't get me  wrong I am not going to get rid of my tech I enjoy   the tech that I have but it really made me think  about everybody's own personal choices of whether   we decide to have cut down on a whole perhaps  box of stuff by not having Tech because they   just perhaps prioritize in you know doing pieces  to camera chats and talking to you guys or whether   they want the videos to be high quality and what  other things they hope to do in the future and   obviously I'm contemplating a second channel that  I'd want to be also high quality now the one thing   that I've learned on my minimalist Journey with  the tech is when you do film with just an iPhone   and you use just the iMovie app unless you are  dropping all your Clips onto the timeline Maybe   boosting the volume and uploading it is very  very hard to edit out mistakes it's also quite   damaging for your eyes you know you have to edit  on a very miniature miniature screen it's not even   the full screen of the iPhone it's within that and  some of you who have used the app probably know   what I'm talking about you can't edit out the odd  little ad lib thing that you've said because it's   not precise enough in the iMovie app so I enjoy  the Precision of having a camera and my laptop   I mean you could do that with your iPhone and say  a laptop but something bigger where the Precision   allows for a little bit more sorry if I keep going  out of focus it doesn't like me doing that I'll   have to come over here so let me show you now  I'm going to put the things to the side that I   keeping here that are not Tech because obviously  as I've mentioned in the shorts and things this is   all my personal possessions that aren't clothing  so let me just put the other things to one side even my partner's passport so what's left  is really Tech all I've got is my paperwork   and um oh sentimental items jewelry the rest is  Tech so in here I have my camera obviously this   is the case the case lens I'm using my camera  this is the sunny tripod that comes with it where should we put this we'll put it here I have  this pouch that I actually keep my laptop charger   in because I don't know whether all of you know  but the Mac laptop charger it's huge and then I   have a couple of other little wires to go with  that I have this other clipon extension for my   tripod for if you want to use your phone with  it instead of a camera and then I have a wire   pouch for all the other wires so it's not it's  it's not just the tech it's the tech stuff now   I do not intend to downsize this stuff because  I value having a camera and ironically I had so   many people in the comments of some videos say  to me oh well you don't have any hobbies as an   extreme minimalist but the filming the filming  and the editing as much as I love it and perhaps   maybe one day it might become a full-time  career or as evenly as with my academic   writing this is a hobby as well so really the  camera equipment itself that I'm actually that   I'm actually making these videos with is my hobby  so I find it quite bizarre when people when people   have said that in the comments before and also  I might just point out although it's a bit off   topic there are as I'm sure many of you will know  that are watching that are also minimalists there   are many hobbies that we can all have that are  not to do with necessarily earning stuff for   instance I candle make that involves getting  a little consumable kit in that I use make the   candles use the candles up it's gone I sometimes  have gone to classes and make Ceramics and then   you know you can use the Ceramics as gifts for  people you don't need any stuff for that you   can make herbal remedies using essential oils  they get used up they're gone there there are   hundreds literally hundreds of hobbies that we  can all do that don't really involve earning   much stuff macrom I do macro sometimes and they  involve just buying the kit once making the macro   macro piece and then perhaps gifting it away if  you don't want to keep it but it's an enjoyable   activity to do that you can then give away so  my camera kit is what I'm getting at to bring   it back in is all my camera stuff is my hobby  my enjoyment and sort of a bit of a side side   career as well I definitely need my laptop though  because that is where I work I work online I do   academic writing there's no way I could ever be  completely tech-free because what I'm getting at   in a roundabout ways I started to think about in  the future I would like to fully see and embellish   the idea of what was mentioned in the comments  of a short period of time with no electricals now   obviously I have to have an element of realism  as that in that we've got lights in our house   I'm not going to start getting rid of all the  oven you know or not using the oven for a week   and starting a fire outside in the street cuz we  don't have a garden but what I mean is personal   electricals that I would normally use so obviously  I've mentioned my hair quite a few times in the   recent videos and I wondered what that would  truly be like to not cuz I already don't have   a hair dryer I let it dry naturally but to not  straighten my hair perhaps for a month to do I'm   already thinking should I make it a week should  I make it a week I don't know if I can do a month   so but you know what I mean to to see what that  would truly feel like and see what else we are perhaps what creativity or creative designs with  my hair would arise if I couldn't straighten my   Fringe and smooth it out you know from  time to time would be forced to do other   things I've not even got all my electricals  here cuz I've left one out from before Oh sunglasses oh that's actually currently empty but  normally I have my airpods in there as well so   let me just get let me get all the electricals  out and then we'll see what they look like one second right I'm back I'm going to use this as  a little perch so that you guys can at least   see at the side of me so the laptop for me is  absolutely essential I use it for work the airpods   are a growing essential thing for it because  people are just getting noisier and noisier   when you're outside and it's just a great device  to be able to block that noise out now don't get   me wrong when I go out for a walk that is away  from people I'm loving the Sounds of Nature and   you know being in the reality and feeling all  my senses but in a town center when people are   talking at like a 100 DB and putting them in new  one this is this is going to be a part of the   outside vlogging because of the reason that I've  just said microphone kit so that I can walk far   away from the camera not hit not worry about too  much of about outside noise and noise interference   so a microphone kit wires an extensions for all  that stuff the actual camera now don't forget I   also have the tripod but I'm using that review  guys my straighteners I did used to have some   cardless one guys but they weren't powerful enough  for my very curly hair they got sent back and just   swapped for some of a little mini straighteners  cuz I like them to be as short as possible for packing finally the Kindle now I've saved this  one until last because really this is the biggest   area of contention for myself now I do like  real books I am a sentient person tactile I   like to touch things but it's just the amount  of space that books take up now luckily I am   also the type of person that once I've read a  book I have no problems giving it away because   I very rarely want to revisit a book and I remind  myself that should I want to read you know a book   again one thing that I do actually really love  is far from the Madden crowd that is a book you   know by Thomas Hardy that I can constantly revisit  but the one good thing about Kindle is any class   like that are often free on the Kindle unlimited  so that's one perk to the Kindle they're often   free from libraries though so what I enjoy  about the Kindle is that it can keep up to   6,000 books without us having books all over our  home especially if we're the type of person that   likes to keep books and does you know does have an  issue with giving them away afterwards but this is   a growing thing that I've been thinking about now  what I'm getting at is if I didn't work online and   need my laptop I would highly consider having an  iPad instead of this because then the iPad would   be two items in one there you could read on your  iPad you can now even get a little keyboard that   you know goes with them you could do a little bit  of word processing on there and you'd also have   a perhaps a little screen for if you did want to  watch watch you a movie or something it would be   the perfect Allin one item they're also very small  for packing but I haven't I've got my Kindle but   it's something that in the future I would give a  lot more thought about because I even thought we   could read on the Kindle app on our phones but I  don't think it's particularly good for his iight   even if we use the black screen just how how  small it is I think would give us a lot of eye   strain so whilst I'm not advising this I'm saying  I have seriously been reconsidering my tech and I   would advise or ask the everybody questions when  I really thought that I had and I'm still happy   with my choices because at the end of the day I  want to make videos but if you are not going to if   you are not going to ever want to make videos of a  particularly high standard or quality and do lots   of editing on your videos I think it is perfectly  okay to make videos on YouTube with just your   iPhone and just using the iMovie app but I like to  play around with my editing and that's definitely   better for your eyes on my laptop I also do you  know academic writing coaching and my own academic   writing and creative writing so I need something  bigger to do that but I can understand why there   are many many minimalists out there that just  stick to to a phone it would definitely simplify   life and what I actually got a while back is if  you did decide that you wanted a little bit of   a microphone because one issue on the iPhone if  you are filming is as soon as you get more than   2 MERS away it is really really hard to pick up  the volume sometimes even if there is a lot of   outside space so what I have for that which sort  of goes with my iPhone is I have a mini microphone   it simply plugs in to your iPhone and you can  move quite far away from it you can get these   leads longer up to 3 m away and it's a real good  way of just simplifying your Tech now what I am   getting at cuz you may think I've waffled on quite  a lot in this video is obviously I said I want   to try a time with no electricals but I obviously  want to continue to make videos for YouTube while   I did that for perhaps a week or a month so I  would I wanted to see what it would feel like   to go back to basics after having had more so I  would perhaps just use my mini tripod my phone   and this microphone for just a week and especially  because I'm beginning to think about how I might   experiment on a new second Channel and being able  to constantly carry around my tech with me so that   I can vlog spor radically anywhere and anywhere  that I like unplanned just whip it out where is my   phone actually while I'm talking about this let me  go get my phone I've not even included my phone in this right I'm back so this is what I'm  calling my new Mini Tech kit it is going   to be what I attempt to perhaps use for I  haven't set the time period yet it might be   7 days it might be 14 days it might be a month  and I might do a little bit of everyday Vlogs or   even just making the general YouTube videos with  it but I want because I'd be making more it to   be as simplified as possible I still would like  to do the video each week that I put effort time   thought into and use perhaps my high-tech stuff  and do it all very well edited but this is so   many I think I found the world's tiniest tripod  like it is as big as my hand so I'm minimizing   my tech for a month I haven't decided when it  is yet I wanted to show you all this really to   really make us all think about what tech we have  what tech we use and I even went further obviously   and even started to think about all the tech in  our house uh is it on camera there but we have a   little projector we have you know even the ovens  are electrical if not Tech but some people could   say it is technology because at one time it was an  oven was advanced technology I mean we don't have   many kitchen appliances but you know now with all  the slow cookers blenders microwaves you know at   one time they were all Tech we've tried to limit  that as much as we can in our kitchen obviously   I've discussed my partner as an air fryer we have  a coffee machine we now even have a blender or is   it a juicer I don't know the difference so we  have actually three things in our kitchen that   would be considered appliances but there are so  many things that you know other people may have   and I just found it bizarre that somebody said  that they didn't use any Tech or electricals   as a minimalist and what what would that life  look like so out of just sheer entertainment   and bewilderment I'm going to at least try to do  it on a personal level for 7 days to a month no   hair straighteners no big bits of tech you know  just my laptop for work my phone and this mini kit I want to know what that feels like and in  in indirectly maybe it will make me appreciate   my other Tech more because I know that when I  went to wear to grease for 3 weeks and I did   only take my phone to do videos with I look back  now at those I think it was two or three videos I   filmed in Greece and they were incredibly hard  to film trying to prop the camera up with no   tripod so obviously that made me appreciate  having a mini tripod being so close to the   camera and worrying about outside noise even more  because I had no mini microphone and then trying   to edit on there is a task all to its own sorry  again for the outside noise so if I was going to   advise anybody to get to the point if they were  make thinking of making a YouTube video ever I   reckon all you really need is your iPhone and a  laptop so you don't get I strain if you want to   do a little bit more Precision editing if you're  happy to just load it up as it is or drop it on   a timeline and load it up that's enough I hope  you've all you know found this video food for   thought I will announce on the community post  when I intend to do this little trial run with   the um with the mini with the mini kit and  what I actually thought not to not to go on   for much longer but the mini kit Vlog for a  week might actually even be an experiment of   what the second channel would be like like  a preview for you all going around making   it really realistic vlogging just with this  using a different style and it would give you   all a taster for if you want to come over to  the second Channel as well but what I'm very   mindful of with the second Channel that I am  thinking about doing is I am not even going to   get stuck just in vlogging you know it's going to  be about lifestyle it's going to be about topical   discussions and debates yes it's also going  to be travel when the opportunity arises for   me but there are a few things that are highly  topical that I want to talk about that I'm not   sure whether some of the minimalist crowd and  public viewers here on this channel would be   interested in but there is some big discussions  I want to perhaps discuss separately that would   be maybe considered very off topic for this  channel so yeah so I want my channel to be   a mouthpiece really for everything and everything  everything and anything that I want to talk about   and show you all because I mean just look guys  that Tech takes up half of that box the other   stuff in my box I don't know why my passports are  separate today I must have been looking at them   for something onethird of the Box half of the Box  Tech a quarter other stuff and there is about a   quarter currently free space so what do you think  guys do you think that real minimalists don't have   Tech I think the answer to that for my personal  opinion is it depends on their lifestyle and what   they do nobody said that as minimalists we don't  have to have technology you know one of my Joys   and passions is film making video making writing  so some of the tech I value and it's essential   for my lifestyle and if you know your value of  minimalism is Going Back to Basics living with no   sort of modern conveniences then fair enough but  nobody ever said you know that real minimalists   had to have no technology I think it's just being  about being mindful just like with everything   about what of these items we really use and we  really value see you all in the next one bye
