[Music] welcome to tech talk thursday season five episode six today we feature the final chapter in the four part series on dr co and the company he founded ko young the title of today's episode is the present and the future of ko young so let's turn our attention uh to to some of the newer developments coming out of ko young uh i mean you you you can you tell us a little bit about some of your other new product series like you know the the neptune for example um what sort of um new areas are coming out in inspection technology from from your stable oh well uh as you mentioned actually uh you see the situation is like this in order to keep our promises to the market so in order to complete the aoi system development we had to uh invest a lot into optical system design and emotional vision technology ai technology uh something like that so our cost structure became very heavy so we sacrificed the kind of profitability of the system uh to actually realize the real uh true true trustworthy aoi system development and uh to provide kind of uh industry other what is it running for kind of a process optimization solution we have to invest a lot uh so our course structure went up so uh it became indispensable for us to expand our business domain okay so that uh you see we we make a lot of uh rnd investments still in order to maintain still reasonable profitability uh we need to expand our business domain so increase our turnover okay then uh that was our intention okay then customers will be happy and uh shareholders will be happy in the same time uh i got some i i'm getting some pressure from shareholders about profitability so i asked them hey give me one or two more years then i will return to the much higher profitability don't worry about that something like that so uh the uh we expanded our uh apply apply the same technology but we need a new market right so uh we had we developed kind of a semiconductor packaging inspection system very special uh and it's recently uh packaging have been done on waveforce temperature so the uh and awakens have uh neurosurface types of uh optical characteristics and they put uh you know the uh what is it passive chips uh condensers and uh capacitors and uh what is it registers on the vapors and uh they have a random reflection characteristics so optically exactly opposite but we are supposed to measure in the same time both of them without those capabilities you know it won't be working so we had to invent something and uh so we invented the new optical system but the rest of the technology software motion vision or mechanical system or say we just uh reinvented the optical head replaced the optical head then it became uh newest uh packaging inspection system okay so with all these shiny devices and things that you reflections that you get off of the wafers yes sir that's it so uh so we are uh we are now pioneering uh you know packaging market and uh our next step uh uh the uh the conformal coating [Music] uh you know engineers uh i've been asking kind of same types of cd5 cd5 you know conformal quality inspection system uh sometimes uh the ems company sometimes got requests from their customers to measure their thickness of a coating on the leaves or something like that and they didn't have any solution so they visited us and they asked us to do so we follow customers that's slogan of coil technology so we followed the request and we found a good uh good technology to realize those uh those targets and uh we applied it actually this technology was developed for a medical purpose actually yeah really yeah you know we applied it but the technology we developed for a medical business and it was working great so actually uh so neptune uh neptune can measure uh not only uh component coating uh but also any uh transparent material okay uh surface geometry and a bottom geometry so measure anywhere on the board yes yes yes so uh so we started selling this neptune series last year september or something right uh we around the september last year we introduced this to the customers and then uh the uh what is it the feedback has been great uh in the first quarter we already sold as much as we sold last year congratulations yeah thank you so uh that much successful so uh uh the uh uh you know as i mentioned uh i think uh we'd like to be uh technology leader in providing a smart factory solution and the whenever a customer needs kind of a process measure and inspection system then goyong will be there so uh we need to expand our business domain and so that's why we started the new businesses so these two are typical examples for example of our business explain expansion efforts um one one of the things that uh a lot of or quite a few inspection companies have is they have um they have a an x-ray component uh so that they can look under bottom terminated devices and bgas and this type of thing um do you think that that's something that needs to become part of of your portfolio as well going forward oh well you see uh the uh you know we follow customers so you know and uh uh we are dealing with uh you know more than uh 3 200 you know electronic manufacturers in the world and many of our customers have been asking us to hey why don't you deliver a kind of x-ray system too something like that but actually you see uh the x-ray players uh you know x-ray system market have been there for uh more than uh 20 years 30 years wasn't it becoming a commoditized market yeah oh so uh that's why we have been wondering uh if uh we need to do it or something like that so our conclusion uh if we if we find that kind of additional values from going x-ray system then we may we may get but however we don't have any idea i mean from the existing players right it's not worth right it's not worse even for customers it's not worth for coil itself it's not worse for customers and uh it's not words for industry set right so uh when we find kind of discriminating technology about the x-ray system then we'll start about lache actually actually we have been trying to do it find it so we have uh uh we have a special team to develop kind of a new types of x-ray souls itself but it's very difficult it's not easy so we haven't been able to uh reach into the conclusion that's frankly speaking um yeah we will get stage yeah we'll keep your eye on that space but i fully understand that until you have some special technology that is worth bringing to the market there is no point to to be there [Music] so let's move on i mean what what do you think of the biggest challenges that our industry is going to face uh over the next five to ten years uh in terms of manufacturing ah you see recently we have been observing kind of uh real happening of a convergence between smt technology and semiconductor packet technology packaging technology their combustion so i think either it will bring about all the smt equipment players to prepare themselves with new solutions so it's we are now really in the transitional period from traditional technology to new technology and there are coming even very new technology in the semiconductor backend process so the i think uh we are supposed to uh invest into rnd a lot again uh to prepare ourselves with a new uh request from our customer customer groups so uh the uh you know what the pcbs smt pcbs but there are many dyes on there jesus christ if we have never seen kind of those uh you know bell dies on the you know pcbs right yeah it's appeared only on the but in the what is the packaging process on right or that uh customers or something like that but you know syllable pcbs dies and uh do you see a lot of smt companies bringing in um more clean rooms actually into the into the smt factory oh well not that much but uh definitely the uh the required cleanup degree uh must be higher higher and uh you see the uh the mountains are supposed to place their dies and you know print first guys underneath dies there is a very much smaller bombs so printers are supposed to deal with the much smaller approach of science something like that so uh it's uh it was a hard job even for goyal to prepare ourselves with new solutions uh for this kind of specific situations yeah so everybody's moving to that sub five micron space and uh it's getting very very small uh not just to place uh these dyes accurately and even for inspection it's it's a challenge and you see the uh the semiconductor industry has been moving very fastly right they are they are what is it producing in uh what is it a seven nano uh you know process and they are they are now moving into five model and uh they are targeting to suriname or something like that right that means you see that means ties will be will become smaller and smaller right yeah yeah wow so uh i think uh it's a definitely transitional period so we need to uh what is it uh what is it we need more accurate uh measurement based inspection system even in spi and aoi and semiconductor obvious ideas that's right and the customers will ask us to deliver a smart factory solution step by step and without it i think we won't be able to uh you know dominate the market at all so we need to prepare ourselves with uh you know smart practice solution uh in any way uh so uh it's uh it's quite uh you know situation becomes quite demanding for equal to manufacturers uh it asks us to invest a lot more than before right so i it's saw a demanding industry yeah i guess so we but we have opportunity in the same time of course so yeah market smt market i think has been growing uh faster than we expected yeah so uh yes well i mean it continues to grow even even though we've had all these i think so yeah even though we've had all these world shocks recently you know the the us-china trade war the pandemic you know the the the conflict in ukraine and russia uh you know all these shocks to the system have still continued to to let electronics grow um and uh in fact i had an interview with uh a gentleman from from siemens recently uh who told us on the design intent side uh they've seen a rise in the last year of 227 of people with design intent to introduce new product uh so that so that just means more growth more demand the demand is growing growing growing all the time so how do you think uh you know with the pandemic and all these challenges i've been facing business how is ko young adapting to that how are you how do you see that affecting you you know a lot of what is it screen meeting uh something like this we have we are having a meeting right we are already something like this inside the company even inside the company we are doing this way the business this way and uh uh so uh the marketing and the sales activities uh you know have been based on webinar or something like that online so we had to uh the jd and uh regina uh you know have to develop their own you know methodology for remote marketing and a remote sales and uh service especially service you know we we couldn't travel overseas so uh in terms of service i think we train the local engineers and uh let local engineers take care of their own customers something like that so headquarter engineers uh don't have to travel anymore okay so that's good thing uh you know we we can reduce travel expenses a lot yeah uh but so you're training you're training the local engineers over zoom calls and things like this on how to calibrate the systems and how to do this how to do the work in the field so exhibition source exhibition shows used to be used to be prepared by headquarter marketing team but now now uh from two years ago uh we let local orchids take care of their own exclusive shows yeah [Music] we provide we provide financial aids only so what is it air force labor efforts you know bad aspects and good aspects they exist in the same time [Music] well i mean it's been it's been an amazing 20 years uh and i have to say uh congratulations and and happy birthday on your your uh your 20 year anniversary um and uh i hope that the next 20 years are going to be equally as as exciting for you and uh we we
