currently she is the vice president of product planning and mobility strategy in hyundai motors north america and is responsible for guiding the strategic direction of their us vehicle lineup leading long and short-range planning as well as developing their u.s mobility strategy including it business solutions connected car technology and future innovations bc thank you so much for joining us today hello miss katie i'm glad to be here you know i'm reading through your bio and we had a chance offline to chat a little bit but i would be remiss to just not write out the jump i'd love for you to share a little bit about your background because you have had such extensive credentials but really you have worked girl after my own heart from the ground up which has built so much character well thank you katie you know i i have this little saying um i call it uh be built up and you'll never have to worry about being puffed up and what i mean by that is getting a core foundation and skills getting a core foundation in character and being ready to persevere and be resilient because you're built up and so in in my career in the auto industry i started out in the plants at ford i worked in body shop i worked in trim chassis final and got to get a core appreciation of the fundamentals and the fact is that is where all the parts that are designed and developed get put together for the customer with quality on time without shutting the line down and then moves to engineering in product development at ford and at chrysler worked as the chief engineer for the the minivan and got to learn working with the body chassis interior powertrain electrical team of how we build a product on time that gets third party recognition and is delivered to the consumer at the best value um and then moved uh to silicon valley and worked at visa in san francisco and brought in-car payments to where we could have a virtual car that is tokenized that um in a vehicle can send payments to various merchants on your commute giving you a little bit more productivity and so getting to learn the innovation and the tech iot tokenization ai machine learning associated with in-car payment combined with the experience of developing vehicles really gave a great foundation now as we work on delivering great products here at hyundai for our consumers and so i think it's very important to get built up because now you have the foundation as you work with your team to understand what things need to be done so that we can deliver products the best in the world i'm going to be using that be built up so you don't have to be puffed up and i'll give you credit don't you worry about that so we flash fast forward to present moment and you just alluded to it you're developing new cars with hyundai perhaps you can kind of pull back the curtain and share a little bit about what that process is like you know one thing that's really important to us is putting people first the consumer the the driver the passenger these this is the priority so you want to immerse yourself in the the community that you're delivering your your um products for as you really work to understand the the the product you sort of go through the inspiration phase so what is that white space that delivers on a challenge and delivers use cases that are going to be um prominent in people's lives so that their product is your product is integrated into their lives in the best way that works for them then you sort of uh after your inspiration phase you go through your ideation phase where you develop the concept and and and show and sort of get response to how that will work for consumers and then you go to let's call it the implementation phase where you have design development the positioning of the product um and then testing and validation and then eventually production but what is key is always keep the consumer at the heart of product development because that is when you deliver the best products i love that people first always and you know as somebody on on my end covering the auto space for so many years and somebody on your end now working in the auto space from so many years i bet we would have one common denominator if not many but in realizing especially over the last three to five years how the vehicle now has really become all about personal mobility and when did you first realize that it's not just about being a car anymore per se but really almost a mobility platform if you will you know i so agree with that comment um one of the things i learned or so the epiphany i had with iot internet of things these are devices that can communicate with other devices over the internet and it enables all these use cases that can solve challenges in people's lives so when we move to mobility and transportation what are those devices especially clean devices that give us a planet friendly world evs electrical vehicles avs autonomous vehicles uams urban air mobility um both in battery ev and both uh in uh fuel cell ev so you have the devices you combine the devices with the right services and the right apps and you can prepare us for this transition that we're going to go through in mobility and transportation over the next few years and i'll give you an example in the future i i suggest that it will have to have mobility trans transportation solutions that are people-centric and are multi-modal and we have the devices to be multimodal so i'll give you an example of what we could picture um i might live in lagos nigeria but i want access whenever i go wherever in the world to transportation and i just need to get from a to b and i might have to use multiple devices so i'm going to land in lax in los angeles and i don't want to drive an hour and a half because i want to go to orange county and downtown laguna and i might take an urban air mobility from lax that lands in john wayne airport that takes me right to orange county and it might be powered by ev or fuel cell a battery ev or fuel cell then when i land there in a verta port i transition to an electric vehicle that's also autonomous that takes me to downtown laguna and i go to downtown laguna when i'm there i want to go the last mile of my trip i might get an e-bike or an e-scooter and i want to go to the last mile of my trip i have an app and a service that gives me access to all those devices wherever i am in the world even if i live in lagos nigeria and then um i can use it if i'm going to munich if i'm going to san francisco if i'm going to new york city and how do we bring the devices the services and the apps together that is a mobility platform and it will power the way we want access to get from a to b wherever we are in the world and and sort of that was sort of the connection for me that we're going to have all these mobility devices service and apps that we need to bring together and what's great about hyundai we are playing in every space that i mentioned and so we're really preparing ourselves to be that smart mobility solution provider i i almost have to laugh because as you're saying this and it's so high tech it's almost like a jetsons era it's like the only thing that you missed in that timeline was like spacely remember george jetson's boss like calling and yelling at him on the journey maybe we're dating ourselves but but it's incredible and it's so exciting for things to look forward to but you touched on evs and electric vehicles of course and hyundai has big plans for evs and i think when it comes to the consumer and for evs in general there's still a lot of hurdles to tackle and it'd be interesting to hear from your point of view how those hurdles are being met well you know there are hurdles but they're not insurmountable over time there are uh there's range anxiety there is uh access to charging there is the price of the ev there is battery life um there's um how do we come and there's charging time how long it takes you to charge and so we again being people-centric want to understand what are those barriers to ev adoption so we've actually developed what we call the egmp platform electric global modular platform that takes into account takes into account these types of hurdles and so we can now charge with ultra fast dc charging in 18 minutes 10 to 80 percent we have a 300 mile all electric um we want to make the interior experience of the vehicle um fantastic so we now have a dedicated ev platform not a reconfigured ice platform or internal combustion engine platform we have a dedicated ev platform that has a flat floor that moves that puts the motor and the power inverter all together in one small package that moves the hvac controls to a different part of the vehicle so i can use the interior more so it allows me to do a lot of things in the interior have seats that recline all the way back have a center console that slides out of the way and allows me to work from the passenger side to the driver's side so you get the technology you bring the interior experience it has vehicle to load capability it allows me to charge things outside the vehicle and so basically my car becomes a power strip on wheels and i can charge camping equipment quick equipment so we want to bring the ev the next gen ev that we're doing with our ion ir ionic five that comes out this fall and have that be the example to take us from the technology that gets over those hurdles and also has the interior you like in the meantime we also know that uh charging infrastructure needs to be ubiquitous so partnering with um big access uh providers to infrastructure so that you can see one in every corner um and in every apartment building parking lot and um at every rest stop and so you need to work with government you need to work with uh infrastructure access players you need to commit with dollars to an ev platform that's going to address those concerns and we're doing all of those things in hyundai incredible stuff and you know when it comes to hyundai's development of autonomous autonomous vehicles and advanced driver assistance features perhaps you can touch on that a little bit some exciting things happening behind the scenes so um on autonomous vehicles we're we have a partnership our our hyundai motor group and active with emotional and we're looking at already we're um uh looking at uh vehicles that can be tested for level five that we started doing in 2020 and so we want to make ourselves ready such that we can provide level five uh autonomy available to oems and to robo taxi firms in 2022. so we're looking to to get to level five we're testing now and we're working to 2022 to have it avail that technology available to share with oems and again another place where we've committed av battery ev fuel cell ev all of that it'd be interesting to hear your perspective on you you probably chat with so many different people and then also friends and family about what their thoughts are on evs and avs and how they're feeling in terms of meeting them where they're at so again with putting people first we're definitely doing all the right things with respect to the technology and the testing and the validation which is critical but there's another piece that has to work even when you're dealing with evs when you're doing with avs there's sort of the cultural mindset am i mentally available does the ev work for me every day in my life and i'm going to be able to charge it from an av am i comfortable that no one's going to be behind that car driving it and so what is critical when you are delivering technology is not to just do technology for technology things technology has to serve people and so you want to make sure that while you're doing all the validation and the testing that is absolutely required on the tech technology front you are also making sure that you're doing the things working with government setting the standards um working with partners so that we bring the awareness and make sure people are comfortable with the technology before we just launch it and so it's a guiding principle for us take care of the security take care of the data privacy take care of what we can do to work in conjunction with with partners to make sure they understand this technology will be safe and it's brought to them in a way that they feel comfortable using it and so you need to watch both fronts and it's really important to us at hyundai amazing to be able to chat with you bc thank you so much for your time and just so cool incredible it is awesome it's like we're in a spaceship john i'll start with you you know this episode is focused on as i noted the new frontier of product development explain to me why you think we're entering into a new era katie biggest year ever for a change in product development how it's done biggest year ever the pandemic forced every product developer to face some new realities and some companies were more successful than others and how they responded but everyone faced these new realities and some of the changes we're seeing we're going to talk about like like agile process digital thread those were already starting to happen pre-pandemic but the pandemic really accelerated and kicked him into high gear i think everyone here would agree with that and kevin weigh in on that too yeah i do agree i mean the pandemic changed a lot for everyone you know not just our customers but their customers so their markets are changing their customers are demanding more innovation of course there's always this cost pressure in product development and so what i would add to what john says is that transformation was happening and now people have focused their transformation on overcoming pandemic related obstacles i would say take it the next step further and just accelerate your digital transformation at this point in time right rather than just trying to overcome the pandemic while you have the patient on the table let's finish the operation i'd say and just keep that momentum going for many instances as well linda i want to bring you into the conversation you're a member of ptc's chief technology office what's your perspective when it comes to this new frontier you know kevin and john's comments are are just spot on we have been on the cusp of this new era this transformation we've seen companies having to innovate having to differentiate faster unimaginably because of the the pandemic and because they're competing in this global economy the good news is the technology advancements have been exploding and that's driving these new solutions and it's really helping companies to to drive better solutions john when we talk about this word agile a lot in this episode and the data suggests that companies that were more agile during this time they fared better but for anyone tuning in that keeps hearing this word perhaps specifically you could expand upon that and really what do we mean when we say agile and agility yeah so what we mean by agile is a different way to run a project okay so the fundamental idea is to take a traditional way to run a project would involve steps that are each maybe months in duration you have a bunch of them laid out over time and with agile you change it so that you have a lot more smaller steps so instead of taking steps of months you might take break it into sub projects of of days or a week and then you take a small step and then you check in and assess where you are and maybe adjust or correct what you're doing to reach the goal better so you're taking more frequent small steps and more frequent corrections it's a very popular maybe dominant process for software product development that we've seen for years in fact i first learned about it because in my role as a in the software development business i wanted to learn about agile and the person i went to see years ago to teach me about it was linda because she was years ahead of me in this this agile she was on more of the cutting edge agile and she we went to linda and said tell us about agile we learned about it in software now in hardware relatively new but it's actually got good roots in hardware engineering theory in a way this is a little observation back when i was in mechanical engineering school i took a control systems class and i learned if you're trying to make a high performance machine a robot or an aircraft that's going to be super high performance or a car you want your control systems to have more frequent higher sampling rates more frequent corrections and adjustments that makes a higher performance machine it makes a higher performance product development team too so what we've seen in the past year whether people wanted to be agile or not they were forced to be agile whatever plans they had long term all got disrupted they had to respond quickly if business was good you had to ramp up the volumes of manufacturing needed maybe redo your supply chain if business was bad maybe had to take a dramatic sudden pivot to make a different kind of product i'm hearing that from some of our customers wow we had to change what we were making super fast whether business was good or bad you had to learn to work in different places everyone did work from home work remote team distributed so what happened was the world forced agile to become this reality i think now that the agile genie is out of the bottle it's not going back in you know people have discovered agile they've been forced to learn how agile they can be it reminds me of the scene in star trek where like the captain's like go to warp 9. they're like we've
never gone to warp 9 before and then you know they do it and it holds together and well once you've gone once you've experienced the warp 9 of agile you're never going to settle again for warp 8. okay are you a trekkie no a little bit i'm learning so much it gets more exciting by the question speaking of question kevin i hate to do this too but i'm gonna put you on the hot seat right out the jump because we're talking about companies and becoming more agile and faster and better and a question from one of our viewers and it's a loaded one how do companies become faster and better especially right now yeah i mean john said a lot there and i i agree with everything he said the one thing that that i would add to it really is that the bridging between the digital and physical is also important about becoming faster and better at what you do to really know what's happening with your products in the field great linda on the heels of that we've used this word as i've said agile quite a bit in this episode but how would you say in your mind at mind's eye how companies can become more agile well the first thing that that we need to keep in mind is being agile is not about a specific department or just a few teams it's applicable across your entire enterprise and john really touched on the the key parts you know first define those those objectives you know as we heard in the first segment on the the different steps that they were going through you know take those steps break it down into small pieces and uh execute on the first step evaluate it pivot if you need to take the next step and have all your teams start working in this manner in the beginning it seems slow you might uh you know you might question are we getting there but the more you do it the faster the more momentum that gets built and you start seeing that momentum across the entire enterprise what's really exciting is uh as changes start happening changes to your business you know think of the pandemic you had to pivot by being agile you're able to respond much more quickly and the the key thing about agile is it becomes a habit it's a habit that you have to build into your culture so we all know habits they take time they take a lot of practice so i encourage everyone to if you haven't started get started if you're ready agile keep going because there's more momentum there's more acceleration and there's more benefit in almost a word i feel that we're going to probably all agree that it's non-negotiable as we've been having this discussion and kevin obviously so incredibly important to every company is this word agile but since this focus in this episode is on product development how would you say that new technology and tools are really helping a business become more agile in that specific area yeah so i mean when i think about agile i think about little framework you understand the situation and then you understand the cause and then you go to take some action and from a product development standpoint to understand the situation for real you want to know what's going on with your product and so the technology there is of course iot connect your products in the field so you can understand the situation you know how your customer's using the product you understand if it's reliable if it's failing you can do all kinds of things once you're connected to the product um so from that perspective product developers can look at how it's used to make the next iteration a very very agile concept um also you know we have an example of a customer they make atvs and those atvs they get used everywhere but let's say they get used in the mountains which they do and they get used in the desert which they also do now the conditions in both of those places are completely different and so now that customer needs to decide well are we going to make a vehicle that can actually handle that range of conditions or could we make specific variants for those different use cases if you will and that's all using iot and knowing what's going on with your product really in the customer's hands i'm constantly amazed by how many different businesses and clients and different partners you touch in so many different realms it's so impressive john let's close the loop here on agility because you know when it comes to the necessary changes for companies to implement their product development process and for any company that is tuning in what are the tools that you personally would go ahead and recommend okay so tools for agile you know you you you want the tools to match the process so some of the tools we're seeing successfully use well it starts of course with my favorite software as a service applications deliver over the cloud you know just about any sort of cloud sas application is going to be on my list for agile but i'll admit i'm a little biased because that's what i spend my days building and i love it um but but also uh simulation we're seeing a lot more simulation going on in the product development community i think it's because of all the factors we're talking about accelerated by covid for agility for speed for innovation and i also think the progress in simulation technology that's happening in the industry at ptc and other companies um work that linda's doing kevin's team has produced some really cool products uh that that brings simulation to new levels to new access we're working on some things not released yet in my group that are pretty exciting simulation and all of it means better tools more demand for it and it helps people find out what the design is going to do earlier faster get a better design moving the next step beyond you get to generative design a lot of interest in that a lot of exciting new technology coming across all of us linda is working particularly on that and we're seeing customers really excited about the system not just evaluate evaluating simulating a design that humans come up with but telling the human here's a new idea that often can be the same a ton of time that people would have spent finding a similar performing idea or will come up with ideas with performance beyond what any human could come up with and that's super exciting in in in the future by the way great use for cloud compute to power that generative design there and then finally don't forget those are tools specific to product development don't forget about general tools that are not specifically aimed at product developers but can be really impactive and useful for product development things like general communication tools like microsoft teams slack those are great product development tools for agile teams cloud-based document editing tools done in the the google docs model things like smartsheet we're seeing a lot of that being used project management tools like jira and asana not specifically aimed at industrial product development but incredible tools that you really have to look at in addition to the tools that say we make that are more industrial specific i have to go back to the beginning of your answer john because you initially mentioned sas and you set yourself up is what you don't know because i don't know if you know this but he's kind of a big deal he was the founder of the world's first sad cad company so i think you're qualified to answer this question from our one of our viewers what are the benefits of sas he's like i need an hour you know big benefits success i'll try and give you the highlights first is collaboration okay collaboration people love cloud sas tools like our our cad tool for for collaborative benefits the first why collaboration let's dig into that a little the first thing is if you're going to have people collaborating they have to be able to access the system okay just basically how many people can use the system and with a sas based system you can get everyone to use it you know it's so easy to deploy to large quantities of people you don't care what computer they're on or even if they have a computer we could we could put on your ipad or your phone everyone can jump in and get involved first of all with sas secondly they're all looking at live data in real time and so you can see what other people are doing it encourages creativity speed innovation all those things come out so big big one is collaboration second one is speed everything happens faster with sas everything from deploying the system you know how long does it take to get a new person on the team up to speed sas it's instant you know versus what could be weeks customers will tell me to get a computer and install stuff and everything we got to get people past that the other thing is speed when it comes to communication i kind of mentioned that everything and de-provisioning when someone comes off the team how quickly can you remove their access to data that's important too all that happens faster with sas finally cost as you know total cost to ownership incredibly lower with sas you're going to save money everyone wants to save money but also you save people's time the the time customers spend in ministering dealing with the system we're all on a quest to reduce that for our customers and i think then they get that that that people time back that they can put to real value-added tasks in their product development teams amazing stuff linda coming back over to you john also mentioned generative design and i think it would be interesting for you to touch on artificial intelligence ai and how it's really starting to change the way that engineers are working as john mentioned about generative design you know it's it's about giving the engineer the opportunity to to specify parameters and to specify their objectives and get multiple options back because of course and with the power of of cloud compute you can really experience many solutions now the the challenge and here is where the the power of artificial intelligence comes into play you know because you specify all of these parameters the number of possible solutions can become huge well how as as an engineer how do i figure out how to sift through all that data well artificial intelligence is there to help to to to work to determine what is uh what are the optimal designs that the engineers should explore so you can go from hundreds of of designs down to that handful that really matter that's just one example for artificial intelligence but let's kind of look out even further and start thinking about what happens as i start specifying those parameters what happens if the system can help give suggestions on other other parameters or how to refine those objectives well if the system can prompt all of the sudden the engineer has even greater control greater innovation and it can really accelerate their design time thanks to the power of artificial intelligence as part of that generative design you know we're going to hear more about generative design later i could go on all day so i'll stop here we are going to see a really amazing example and you know you're touching on some great examples yourself but how would you also compare what we call essentially the old processes of design and manufacturing to today's more collaborative if you will versions well if we think of the the traditional where where we are today and you design you work with your analysts and you you go through this process then you send it off to your manufacturer and you get oh i can't manufacture that well what do you have to do you come back to your designer with the the new modifications you work with your analysts you iterate you give it back to manufacturing hopefully you can manufacture but typically you have to iterate yet again so it's better let's refine it continue that that cycle we all know that cycle the the goal here where we're moving to is to remove some of those barriers and to really accelerate the the cycle and john touched on you know some of the technologies it's it's about bringing simulation up upfront into the design process it's about leveraging generative design and engaging the the analysts and the manufacturer the collaboration is is also a key element the more you can bring each piece together the faster you're going to get to your product solution so the faster you get to market and i think right off the heels of that i think we could all agree that creating a digital thread throughout the enterprise is exactly what's happening and kevin we hear this digital thread now more than ever perhaps you can just dive in and share why this is important right now well it's important because it makes you faster and more efficient and also it can help you greatly improve decision making so first you know a digital thread it's it's literally a thread of information between major systems that you have in your company your plm system your erp system mes crm even out to your product and so how does it make you faster and more efficient well if you're a company where the product is the center of value that you're delivering to your customer it can start in engineering with everything that you create there think about you know requirements and systems models and engineering bill materials manufacturing bill materials service bill materials all of those things can be used to create a digital threat here's a couple of examples you can take manufacturing bill materials and send it to erp and it'll become the material master and you can create a digital thread between plm and erp in that case likewise you can do the same with crm you can send a service bill materials to your crm system or to your service parts system and create a digital thread between those so all everyone is working on the same source of information so you're faster and more efficient in creating the digital thread but then think later you want to make an engineering change and you want to do an engineering change impact analysis it'd be nice to know how much stock we have left in manufacturing where is it how much does it cost and same for service where do we have service spare parts around the world and so rather than copying that information into your plm system you want to use the digital thread to go get you know the stock the cost location from the erp system and from let's say the crm system or the service spare parts docking system so that's how you get faster and more efficient when you're creating it and then you use it for better decision making down the road that's why it's important and any company wants to be more fast and more efficient and so many benefits here for companies john just to close the loop oh yeah when i hear kevin talk about this digital thread vision it really it makes me realize how many of the old digital tools really just uh emulate paper-based workflows you know whether you realize or not you might think well we already have computers so what's new about digital thread well the pre-digital thread a lot of the workflows and computers are based on what we did on on paper years ago and for those of us who were around when businesses run on paper and you literally hear it in the computer terminology of of first generation digital systems they talk about files and folders and copies and and even mail email the icon is an envelope like a paper envelope it's just paper and so we're we're we're repeating the copy the copy machine and forwarding copies of old information around that's what we did on paper that's what we're doing the old generation of digital systems the digital thread is a quest to really capitalize on the full power of digital i think what kevin's talking about by not emulating a paper workflow and copying everything like you said but by connecting everything i think of it as i think the the reality of digital thread is emphasizing what i think of as three everys if you will every person having access every piece of equipment whether it's the product you build or the or the equipment you use to manufacture it and service it and every bit of data every person every piece of equipment every bit of data coming together with real-time interconnected access now that's not a step function where you go from the paper workflow to the digital thread right you do it gradually and that's what you're doing right with your products what we're we're doing with our products i think we're collectively trying to realize that digital thread vision i think it it really is a different level of productivity of benefit for the product developer the three everys you might be honest did you come up with that uh yeah just just listening to kevin makes me think about it i mean you know i'm thinking that that right there is book worthy i will be your hype girl i'm just saying all right uh we'll have you back to talk about those everything hold me to it on that note we've talked a lot about digital thread now let's see an example of how it actually works in the real world let's see a demo featuring a ptc customer staying competitive in today's market requires manufacturers to offer a wide range of product configurations to manage this complexity companies like volvo turn to ptc to enable the free flow of information between engineering and manufacturing creating a digital thread that is critical for designing improved components and bringing them to production quickly ptc's windchill plm enables this efficient accurate and traceable workflow for product development while reducing time to market lowering costs and improving quality leveraging creo's generative design capabilities a new cooling fan was developed and incorporated into an overloaded e-bomb replacing a number of different designs this new generatively designed fan is lighter stronger and compatible with every engine variant reducing supply chain complexity and increasing reliability through windchill's change orchestration process the affected suppliers are notified of the update through their erp systems at volvo a change task is automatically sent to the manufacturing engineer responsible for this part of the mac engine assembly process opening the visualized m-bomb and e-bomb side by side the engineer consumes the changes from the e-bomb into their downstream manufacturing planning deliverables by selecting view equivalent occurrence status the engineer can see the modifications in the e-bomb with control characteristics and parts added the engineer can save the changes propagate them to the m-bomb and then begin updating the assembly process for the engine after fully assembled quality inspectors leverage augmented reality to compare the as designed to the as manufactured engine catching errors before they leave the factory windchill further provides closed loop quality through mpm and thing works if an operator conducts a quality check and finds an issue with the assembly they can easily generate a problem report for engineering to correct the issue with a task in wind chill noting that the connected tool fails to adhere to the required torque setting manufacturing engineers can update the required torque in the process plan and push the change directly to the work instructions ensuring operators continue to have viable information by connecting upstream and downstream stakeholders from design all the way to the shop floor ptc provides the backbone for an industrialized digital thread i think we can all agree that was an incredible example maybe it's my inner nerd but i get really excited about good visual demos now the final word in this new frontier of product development is disruption and linda over to you how do you feel the old way of doing things is just being disrupted well when i think about it think about parametric design it was considered disruptive to the the computer-aided design space and as i look at it i look at what are some of the common threads the most notable thread is all of this advancement in technology i mean think about it we've been talking about it artificial intelligence cloud compute edge compute for iot um you know mobile augmented reality the list just goes on and with all of these advancements in technology there are these new solutions that are coming to the forefront to really help people solve problems and create their their products augment their products in in different ways you know you saw great examples in in that volvo demo so that the disruption has already started and it's going to continue and it's going to accelerate excellent thank you linda john any more examples of how disruption can be beneficial i think we've you know we've covered it we've said it you know you get you get you're going to take your organization you're going to move it to a new level of responding to the change in the world faster produce better products more innovative products the competitive advantages of the new world are different than the ones of the old world it's not anymore about how much capital you have what your location is it's going to be more and more about your agility your innovation the information flow in your company will become a competitive asset and that's going to all be disruptive to put companies ahead of their competition when it comes to companies and their competition in the future linda back your way from your viewpoint curious to your thoughts of what do you see it's kind of a loaded question but what do you see in the future you know we're we're definitely going to see advancement in the mix of digital and real world experiences things like augmented virtual reality that has huge potential we're already seeing it and it has even more potential going forward we were talking uh i think it was kevin was talking about the the data that that we have across the digital thread the the connection the collaboration you take those pieces and you bring artificial intelligence into that mix the solutions that are are we're just beginning to see and the solutions that are really going to come out in the next three to five years are are just going to be amazing and really advance and you know advance the ability uh across the product design cycle and we'll see some really cool products you know as we talk about things like you know the ev card for example you know especially in my world of consumer technology in the media it's always fun and exciting when you're talking about new innovations and new advancements and what's out there but at the same time i think there's this realistic point where you just have to appreciate when there's a great product already out there but it's just you can make it better and you're iterating off of something that already exists and how would you say that some of the tools that we're discussing today really play a role in that process that is such a great point you know the tools that we've been talking about it is about improving so it's not just a a clean sheet you have to to start from scratch it's taking what you have and improving on it for whatever is important for you is it do you want to improve uh fuel economy you want to make products lighter weight you want to get it to market faster you want to be able to service on you know the product that's out in the the wild the the tools the technologies you know things that we touched on the simulation the sas applications that are out there and uh generative design everything we've been talking about across the digital thread are there to help improve those products great stuff thank you linda as we start to wrap up our conversation kevin i just want to come back to you for a moment because something i know that you're very proud of at ptc is talk in the talk and walk in the walk and when it comes to disruption perhaps you can share a little bit more about that sure yeah i mean we we have a proud history of disruption you know i think linda mentioned it we were the first to market with parametric based cad we're the first to market with uh with web-based plm we got into iot early in 2013 people thought we were nuts but we saw that as a plm concept we got into augmented reality uh now we're the first in in sas based cad in sas based plm but that's less important than us actually bringing those technologies to bear for our customers to disrupt themselves you know being able to create an ar experience from from a cad model or being able to connect to the product out in the field like i talked about before um and really transform their their their customers experience through their products all right since your last any final words you'd like to leave the audience with as we close well i'd like to say really if you haven't started your digital transformation you really ought to it's no time like right now my goodness it's it's just as i said earlier i think the word we could all agree on is maybe non-negotiable correct yeah or imperative maybe that's the other thing non-negotiable i like though you give me credit for that thank you to kevin to linda and john for helping us find our way through the new frontier of product development well how about a different kind of frontier outer space there are few engineering challenges as complex as the design of the next generation spacesuit you have to create something that safeguards human astronauts from the harsh conditions of space but every ounce of protection has to be calculated for so many reasons our next guest is in the process of solving that problem right now kelly bryant thank you so much for joining us today it's my pleasure katie my goodness having the opportunity to learn more about you and the project that you're working on it is fascinating i'm so excited for our audience to be listening in on this conversation but first tell us what you do in your job at jacobs engineering i do the engineering support for our design teams i help do the training any kind of new product i help support them make sure that they learn how to use it and do it all correctly and efficiently and it's my understanding there's a massive project going on right now that we like to say it's cheesy wait for the pun it's out of this world okay i said it i said it it is out of this world that's right nasa has launched the gateway project and it'll be a an orbital station orbiting around the moon and it'll be a place where the astronauts can go to and then they can go from there down to the moon a lot easier than having to come all the way back to earth and eventually it'll be a stopover on their way to deep space such as mars unbelievable not many people can say that they are working on a project of this magnitude and you shared a little bit about your world and your role in engineering but it also has a very human element to it if you will sure you know obviously we're since we're working on designing these new spacesuits and in particular the portable life support system you have to be able to reduce the weight because mass matters as you're sending it up into space but you know the first thing you have to keep in mind is um you have to be able to support a human life so it has to be uh exactly correct so that there are no problems with that it's incredible too to hear you say that because it's there's room for iteration and room for failure and projects but in a in a time like this there is just zero room for error because of the magnitude of the project that you're working on but i'm curious to hear and i think for anybody tuning in they would find it fascinating what tools that your designers and your engineers are utilizing to work on the project well we're using uh the generative design tool we also use the simulation and the simulation live with generative design we can do a design on a project where you can enter the loads and constraints of what this piece has to be able to support get everything set up tell it to go you can go to lunch you can come back and it'll have some options available for you that you can evaluate further and see which one of those is actually the best we've been speaking a lot in this episode about generative design and it helping things in the process and i imagine as you just alluded to a little bit it has been an integral part of the process yeah it's it's one of the key things that you know it's a new technology we're learning how to use it and and trying to see what it can really help us with um on our design projects i have to say as somebody that is a a nerd and has a background in technology proudly i've always been adamant in my subjective point of view that technology is amazing but there is nothing like the human heart and the human touch and i imagine that that is something that you've found effective in your collaboration yes we want great technology and to use it seamlessly and efficiently but also make sure that is working with people and people first sure you know like like we said you know you've got a an astronaut life you know that's that's depending upon this thing that's gonna that you're designing so you've got to obviously make sure that it functions correctly you know the the safety is the critical importance on that thing but you want it to be lighter so that they can do their job better um you know mass matters as you're sending things up into space and you want it to be flexible enough that that they can do their job um you know maybe better than they could before step back with me for a moment if you will because i want to go back to generative design and i'm curious if the engineers that you're working with are they ever surprised with the generative design tools that you're coming up with sure you know as as mechanical engineers we like to a lot of times think in terms of straight lines or circles or you know obviously easy things that are that you can machine but with generative design it comes up with organic design shapes that you would not have thought of before and yet they're stronger you know lighter they're able to do the job better and it's something that you wouldn't just think of normally as a as a way to do a a design you're a mechanical engineer and i asked you when i first met you did you ever think that you'd be in this position in this job doing the project that you're doing in a million years no this this is a dream job you know i think as a mechanical engineer you know anybody with any honesty would probably say they would love to have anything to do with uh the aerospace industry working you know with uh with nasa with a contractor for nasa or whatever and uh just the opportunity to be able to do that to help these engineers to do their job better and easier um you just you couldn't get it any better and by the way maybe it's an overshare but for our audience you know you got to be the coolest dad your son thinks that you know the gig is awesome and you've hit up nasa gift shops and brought them stuff back autographed that they just think is really cool that's pretty fun i i like to be able to you know show them some of the tools that that we're able to do and you know share with them videos of you know potential um things that we're designing that are going to go up into space and you know now with all the new um things that nasa is sending up you know to the space station and all it it's a lot of fun amazing stuff kelly bryant thank you so much for coming with and changing the world you are the featured individual on the
