harvest and then how do we try to how do we try to ensure that all our raw materials maintain its freshness its properties uh at the same time how do we actually farm it in a efficient manner especially in singapore where we are really talking about urban farming um at the same time we also have students graduates in the manufacturing sector where they are involved in food engineering food processing of different materials and then finally if you actually look at the supermarkets you see rows and rows of products these are actually a lot of this are actually the products the projects of many food scientists they work with different people within a food company to actually come out the different tastes different profiles different types of food that you you buy and at the same time they're also involved in consumer studies to try to understand what uh what makes you buy their products finally we also have graduates within the health care industry they are involved in uh nutrition they are involved in pharmaceuticals and so on so you see on your right there's actually a whole list of different types of jobs that our graduates actually do within the food industry so this is just the industry the industry itself within the government sectors we also have our graduates working there in food related jobs such as sfa health promotion board nea and also uh health science authority we also have our graduates working in uh edb uh economic economic development board where they're actually also involved in attracting um external invest investors on food companies who come over to singapore so it's actually a very diverse range of jobs that our our graduates take and then finally we have this ever-growing food sector that is actually currently very exciting because in singapore we are considered the the asian silicon valley for food tech and agritech it's growing and there's a lot of investment a lot of interest that comes here and um our graduates actually is part of this whole food tech and agri agritech startup system um if you look around the the only food science degree program that has the longest running running track record is really the one at nus so we have been around for over 20 years as a first major in food science and technology and that actually has a lot of impact later you'll see as i go along other than that we also in more recent years we also provide a second major food science second major nutrition and so on uh and at every any single time we do have about 230 undergraduates um and also 200 postgraduates these 200 postgrad graduates are graduates that are either doing masters or phd in food science and technology and then all together we have over a thousand over alumni that is in food sectors or related sectors either locally or overseas um if you if you come to visit our our science program you will actually get to meet uh quite a few uh academic staff that are involved in different aspects of food science and technology fst um right now we have 11 full-time academic stuff so this this photo is a bit outdated already but you see actually you'll see much more number of people and faces new faces out here um some of us are involved in food chemistry analysis and toxicology there are also people like me that is involved in human nutrition um there are also people that are involved in fermentation biotransformation how they transform food waste to something that is higher value they also ensure food safety how what are ways to to detect uh microbes within food or how do we keep them fresher for a longer time and so on of course there's also our food engineers and food that's involved in food processing and so on so so these are actually our full-time staff that are present within our department that does teaching so that we come and teach our students as well as doing a lot of top-end research the research that we do actually you might you might have some impression because uh along the way when you look at newspapers when you look at social media platforms and so on uh you do see a lot of my colleagues talking about different aspects of their science their research um this these are not only just within our local newspapers but it's also being reported overseas and also on professional food science platforms besides this i would want to also make a point that within the teaching staff that we within the other professors that you will be interacting with um it is not just professors that uh works in research works in academia we also have professors that are actually bosses or people from at higher management in the industry so here are actually our industry professors what they do is that they actually come in to teach you the students certain modules that is relevant to their expertise okay it's actually very important because they don't just come in and give one talk and then they're gone they're actually here to design a curriculum they're here to design a lab experiences here to design exam questions and so on that are relevant to what the industry currently needs so here this group of uh ladies and gentlemen actually do instill all the industry relevant skills that you will be exposed to so in all we actually have 21 uh professors and industry leaders that are here to actually carry out the curriculum for you um on this curriculum we have about more than 20 fsd modules it's actually quite understatement already i think there's about between 30 if you go and count this quite a lot okay it's many different types it's under food safety it could be under food processing new product development or nutrition if you want to have the whole list you can actually scan the qr code on the on on the right okay this will actually bring you to the list of different modules that you'll be exposed to within the within within the food science and technology department so how does that actually fit into chs okay um food science fsd first major when they come into nus um although they are actually emitted directly you guys will still be under the college of humanities and sciences and therefore you would also need to also complete the whole structure of chs meaning that other than taking let me just get my other than taking the fst modules okay you have a whole list of 15 modules under ffc that you have to complete for your first major you also have to complete your common core modules that is under the chs these is actually the two standard standard uh part of the pie or a doughnut so so here you see a doughnut right generally these four years you will complete 160 mcs or about 40 modules and you can actually separate them into three parts one part will be your common core one part will be your first major and then you have this other part that is called unrestricted modules it's unrestricted meaning that you can actually have the you you can actually have a lot of space to think about how you want to uh make use of this unrestricted space okay i'll give you some examples of how uh depending on how you make this unrestricted space you can become very versatile or you can integrate two different types of subject in a deeper manner or you can actually become a very specialized food science uh food science graduate okay i'll give you some examples in the next slide okay so let's say you want yeah you're thinking about some uh doing a more doing a few things okay uh you want to be a versatilist so other than being a first major in food science okay you want to use this unrestricted major to do other things what we will advise and really encourage is to use this unrestricted space to do a minor there's actually quite a lot of minors around uh within chs um and here i actually saw the list of miners that we actually have our previous students um although they are not under chs previously we have actually quite a lot of other students that is under food science that had taken some of these modules a minor in entrepreneurship is something we definitely would encourage because uh from there it gives you a business perspective and then it may actually help you form your next food tech setup yeah you never know okay there's also students that go for uh minor in public health life science or even minor in nutrition which is something that we manage within the food science and technology department and then overall what you will have would be for example um you will get a bachelor's of science degree okay with honors that is an fst major with me a minor in nutrition or at a minor in entrepreneurship you can do one minor two minor there is still enough space under the ue unrestricted elective space for you to make use of that okay but then you might think that okay maybe i i want to learn another subject in a deeper manner and hopefully from there i can interweave everything together my food science together with this this um second major this other subject that i want to learn at a deeper matter so these are people that we usually describe as integrators okay uh what are those people these are people that would use this ue space and restricted space to read a second major okay depending on what second major you do okay there are second majors that's available under science okay within the same faculty and also there are second majors that are available under fass faculty of arts and social science depending on whether you are taking something that comes from asian studies and humanities group or the social sciences group you actually get slightly different degrees at the end for example if you take something from science so no need to eat that you have food science like technology as the first major and then after that you take another major your second major is a contrasting one meaning that comes from um uh f-a-s-s okay uh if you decide to for example take take psychology double you will actually get a double degree in food science and psychology okay uh what the title would then be is a bachelor's of science um and a bachelor of social science on the other hand if you actually take a second major that is under science okay under faculty of science um it means that you will graduate with a double major under a bachelor's of science with honors so one example would be a double major in food science and data science okay so these are the different types of possibilities finally you can also still use this space to do a deep specialization so with this specialization it actually sets you quite well prepared to actually be part of the whole growing innovation food sector and also the current industry r d sectors because if you look at a lot of companies uh food companies in singapore they actually have a r d center or they have r d department uh they do value a lot of this research and development type of experience that students would have when they join them and therefore this would be suitable for such students at the same time because of your advanced knowledge you will be able to contribute in a very meaningful manner in terms of driving deep tech within our ecosystem here you actually are examples of some of our full tech startups that started by our staff staff meaning this this is prop 13 he started his own uh food tech startup um and students alumni they actually have been quite active within uh supporting this whole new ecosystem of food technology and agritech and so on so overall you see that in terms of our the way we want to teach students um or prepare them for the future their future future jobs we generally start with foundation building and then skills building and then we will then teach you all the applied related sciences that related to food science and then something more advanced so all these are competency building but we also encourage students to get more from your nus experience a lot of our students um have a lot of uh that do go on to have an overseas experience either in the form of exchange um summer school or noc noc is nus overseas college later i think uh muslim gi uh our alumni will actually share a bit about some of her experience under this nus overseas college and then there are students that would explore internships explore research opportunities and also pick up other types of student activities just to actually have a holistic education and then make you uh ready for your future jobs here are actually some examples of where our students have been to um you you'll see that you have opportunities to go around the world okay in various different different formats and at the same time you will notice that some of these universities where students go to are actually very well recognized food science uh universities or food science and technology university so it's actually quite a good experience for many of them when they come back we also have very well established uh relationship with the industry so every year we we generally have about 60 over internship collaborations with the industry uh the big food companies global mnc's flavor houses all the big flavor houses around the world actually have r d center here we also send students out into government organizations global ingredient companies and so on so this this companies actually these examples here are companies that we have actually worked with for many many years we are around for 23 years some of them really we were working with them since day one so it's like over 20 years they know our students our student quality uh and and they actually have quite a lot of confidence in how we train our students because whenever we say we need we need internships then uh our students go and ask them for internships they are actually a lot of doors that will be open to to allow them to take up internships a part of this can be also seen in the way the industries support our food science students because they actually do also sponsor scholarships and book prizes these are some examples of them and this there's quite a lot especially the ones that has this star here that indicates that these are actually uh book prizes or scholarships that's specific for food science students you can get more information if you um scan the qr code on the site so that you can learn a bit more if you're interested so overall at this point we have more than one thousand over alumni that is various different sectors food sectors and related sectors either in business development nutrition government food industry so so here are just some examples of it it's they are actually part of this expanding food sector we say expanding because food science and technology okay um it's from your raw materials all the way to your consumer consumer health and so on and actually above that it actually does include agri technology aqua technology the production of all the produce that eventually makes food okay at the same time this food goes in the body and it becomes nutrition so all this is also part of this expanding food sector uh right now uh i think maybe some of the students might also be aware that we also have this particular goal of 30 by 30. we are trying to get 30 percent of our trying to be able to produce our 30 of our own food by 2030. so there's actually also a lot of funding a lot of support a lot of a bus really a lot of us um interests okay uh in different types of ways to to to um to be part of this expanding food sector and to reach some of these goals that is common with people in singapore and also around the world because if you look at this at the broader perspective it's not just singapore that's trying to be food secure the whole world is trying to do the same thing and then different different different countries different ways they are trying to find different solutions so you're not only just learning a skill set that is suitable for singapore it's actually suitable for the whole world okay so that's why i hope you would try you would want to consider taking uh the nus advantage because um our first major is actually one of the most internationally recognized degree food science degree program in singapore okay and it's uh it actually has a in this proven record with the industry the industry people know nus food science students so when you tell them uh from nbs food science they will they will know okay uh and then uh we actually have a lot of flexibility here with the number of combinations that you can get you can really find a way to make yourself a very unique person with unique skill sets that can contribute to this expanding food sector of course you we often encourage students to have a global experience have an industry attachment and so on so so this is actually a lot of the advantages that has already been uh instilled or set within this whole um whole system also within a whole chs system okay so my talk i think i am at the end of my slides so this is actually maybe one of the key slides that some of you would be interested in um one key thing here a few key things to note first um when during the your emissions uh when you try to apply for uh for emissions uh bear in mind that for fft first major as a first major is a direct emissions meaning that during your application process you have to apply for food science and technology okay so this is directly direct emissions but for food science as a second major and nutrition this you apply this is not under direct emissions so you won't find an option in the drop down list during your application this one is under chs okay so the meaning that you have to come into chs first for food science second major you have to come into chs and then and then be part of chemistry first major before you can actually apply for your food science as a second major for nutrition as a second major this is a bit more flexible because students would uh uh need to take fst-1101b the gateway module for for food science and also the gateway model for nutrition and then they can actually uh continue on so that there isn't a cut-off for this so likely uh likely our 100 cohort intake should be should be in nafla so but uh the income in comparison for your first major that's actually uh quite limited spaces it's only up to 60 okay and it's direct emissions and then for food science is about 20. so this one is the

true chs this one is also true chs okay the requirements are similar meaning that at a levels you have to have any two h2 pass that is either chemistry or bio or physics or math or computing okay but if you don't have chemistry or bio as a level or equivalent then you will have to take a bridging module in your first semester when you uh join us under chs okay so this is uh this is more or less uh most of the things that i i think would be enough to inform you to have a first thought about whether you want to uh come and join us at the uh at this food science and technology program uh you can we also have an instagram account okay you can uh go follow that and then you can see what are the things that we usually do uh sometimes it's about students sometimes it's about staff sometimes it's about the whole program and so on so you get a more fuller picture okay um right now i don't see there's any questions but uh also so so i will leave maybe if you have questions we can leave it at the end first i can let uh yeah
