right so today is the dx dx commander expedition  speed challenge because this is tom he's going   away we're not telling you where he's  going he's got a 90 minute a 90 minutes   90 mile island remote trip portable with solar  power that's coming up he's taking an expedition   with him all right so see how fast we can  build this lockheed's the cameraman today   but sometimes he might have to stop to  help us do the fast soldiering all right   and josh from ham radio crash course  sorry mr cool okay right i'll uh see   you in a minute is there any other dx10 other  than just here oh here there's some some here okay unravel that tom three metres here three meters to there so if  we just rattle off wire okay fine so we've got   four together i'll twist them together right  and we'll just see how many long basically there yeah yep we can put a bit of self-harm on there  yeah what do you think afterwards i do want to slip them all exactly at the same  length at the very end do you want two or no i'm   not bothered i'm gonna bother drying okay he's not  bothered it's like your haircut yeah okay oh yeah   well they're all the same then through  hopefully okay so that's about 10 minutes   and what we've done is we've got three bunches  of radials um we've used three four connectors   there's three meters on each radial there's six  radials in each bunch three sixes are eighteen   18's 3 8 24 74 meters is that right no 72 meters  oh six three sixes are 18 right okay so we've got   six radials three meters long and that all into  one full connector 18 meters so each bunch of   radials is 18 meters and how many bunches do we  have four four to four 18s is 72 because 218 is   36. that's how i did it you see now we're going  to just get a little bit of self-amalgamated tape   just to make the end of the forks look nice  tommy's now going to demonstrate how to do this so the trickiness is getting the back off this  yeah and how much of this stuff do you want   not too much bloom you are using a lot  that's very expensive tom   marx had a 10 in the comments for  tom's ability to self-amalgamate i haven't evolved that far  what bands do you want on this   uh we're gonna go for 40 20 and 10 40 20 10 and  18 as a backup yeah all right okay all right we   can do that how do you turn it around there we  go that's a really unflattering angle of my face   okay i'm ready okay then you hold  the end and just throw it out what you didn't see is the special trick of how  to wind your radials up not how to wind your   wife up so i hold one of these in my left hand  because i can only do it one-handed and i put my   hand down that backwards down there and i lift  up and i'm cool i'm causing a little anti-turn   if that's an anti-turn that's a positive  turn then an anti then a positive and then if there was any more you could  do an antique right and the idea is   is you can grab hold of the end you can take  that together put a zip tie on it whatever   and then it all untangles that's how you do  it so this is my favorite tape 3m 10 flex   10 millimeters that's probably 10 meters a lot  of you are gonna have is oh you should use velcro   for doing this we don't have any velcro i'm sure  tom is capable of getting some little velcro ties   all right in the meantime all we're going to  do is we're going to take these radials up   uh there's your tape sir thank you some bloke once  taught me this oh what leave a fail detail yeah   let's feel detail and you can always  find the end lovely okay so we're in what   15 20 minutes in and all the radials are done  is that right yeah and you said you wanted 10 20 40 and 80. yeah okay so we need the chart ah  lookie could you dial up for me uh dx commander   user guide please right scroll down we  get a bunch of length somewhere on here   and a table with a little chart whoa there  it is two and a half 502 eleven fifteen [ __ ] put the fork connectors on this  just like an so239 single wire 2.5 meters exactly there tom's just carrying on doing the rest of his  self-amalgamating tape and tom had four radials   before connector we could have used glue lined  heat shrink and that's the reason why we're   not using a glue line heat shrink on this he's  doing his self-amalgamating tape and stuff right that's 10 meters done uh that's 20. no just one

have end got those little sorry mate that's the  other one if you can find some you can take them without you if not what we'll do do you  know the colors of the rainbow now tom   does fancy some of those little kiddie  bracelet things we put on these sometimes   but we can't find them so what  i'm suggesting we do is we   do the colors of the rainbow red orange yellow  green so red is going to be for 10 meters orange so we'll give them red at the bottom but  when the elements are lined on the floor   he's going to want a little one somewhere  near the top so we'll do that as well   tom is desperately hunting for those  little um kids cubes that use for bracelets   and their little number so we could have like 10  20 things like that but i'm going to show him the   less weight and more adult way of doing it is  why just gotta go to your elements like that   let's go and see how he's getting on why is that  placing such a tip oh okay it's not in that box definitely not in that box they'll be on their own somewhere what sort of autistic adhd person   has a workbench that you can't work  on it's just a horizontal storage area i'm gonna tidy this up not today  you're not you can come back   and good news is he's found one of the analyzers  all right not all of them just one of them okay tom we can start to reel off a 10 meter oh 11 oh how much 439 inches where's 10 meters what do you  say 11 15. 11.15 meters okay hold on then damn oh it is that's all right that's all  right so we're not on youtube we need some of his black shed not that i'm gonna fold that in half that's all the soldering done so we'll get one  of when he's rather than going into the shop and   getting 16 bolts and 14 washers and all that stuff  we'll just have one of wendy's bags should have   i should have pre-done one of these so  one of these boxes got expeditions in it   expedition checklist lovely so all the  bits we're gonna need are gonna be in there   right you wanna do do your trick with  this now the thing is so tom with dx10   you could probably just curl that up  normally throw it out and it'll be fine   all right so we'll do a test in a minute out  there but we need to assemble the plate set   tom's recording hey thumbs are good he's  the cameraman so tom's on the camera now   and what we're doing is we're building him  an expedition kit so if you bought this   it would arrive in a big box you'd undo the  box and part of that box apart from a reel of   wire which you've already seen us play with i'm  not doing a demonstration of what all this is   what we're going to do right now is just build  it but to do that we need a box which i think is   this that's a smiley face that loki does and that  little triangle at the bottom i happen to know   means it's the plate set for an  expedition kit the lock is packed   as an so239 we've got some self-amalgamating  tape instructions tells you where to get them ah you get a poll lucky where are the  expedition poles are they pre-wrapped at the and moment above you okay so we'll need this as well we'll test this out  in a minute and make sure it's going to work for   tom but in the meantime tom if you come closer we  get our screw some nuts bolts and washers together   here and to do that i'm going to put my glasses  on i'm going to screw these up there and i'm just   i'm not doing that middle one right oh and  i will that will be for his so2394 connector and he wants four we've got 80  meters as well so we'll put 80 meters on that one i'll just get my spanner the thread's a bit sticky that's  all right so they're all ready to go right so all i'm doing is just tensioning them  to the point where they're not going to fall out   or when tom does out his wing nut everything  just you know it's not going to rattle off   that's all i'm doing probably about a half a turn lovely right i think we want to put this  oh let's get the so239 on that tom i thought i had some scissors now i'm suggesting don't need the ground tag  but optionally people might want the little   the little serrated bit and we'll tension this up we'll use a huge great  set of pliers on that i normally just do that   by hand but anyway that's in it's not going to  fall off i'll just check is that big enough yeah nice lovely okay now we can put  that on the bottom of your pole i'm just anticlockwising let's find the thread  so i can tighten it up now question for you tom   are you going to be dismantling this every time  you put it away or you're gonna like put it in   your backpack sticking out the top like that  i suspect yeah okay fine do you want washers yes you do please oh i forgot to put on a washer why is it when you're filming me i can't put   a wing nut on a thread and i just spun it  off well is there a medical term for that   yeah stage fright isn't it oh is it stage fright  i don't know you should be good at this by now ah done it okay the trick is just use two  hands all right it's a lot easier   so that's them on now i think we should do is if  you're going to keep this on permanently we will create you a little right yeah and for this one  here i'll see if i've got one of these but with   a big wing on it but the charts are it's only  gonna be up for a couple of hours at a time   isn't it yeah so you shouldn't need anything  else i'm gonna suggest tom that instead of   trying to guide us all the time i've just lost  a wing nut on the floor somewhere instead of   trying to guide us all the time you are going  to be in place in a place with trees aren't you   yeah trees or fences and things yeah so you just  better lean it up against the fence yeah i think   i'll have plenty of bungees and things like i can  put it up against with fence posts and things i   mean you could dye it if you want to but i'll tell  you what because you're a special friend we will   use some nice black rubber hose so this is this  is non-standard right it's kind of kinky all right i would love to be able to supply this but it is it's far too expensive but  you bought coffee so smart what actually is that gun it's pure rubber tubing we supply that with the nebula kit the 18 meter there it is screwdriver basically it's very rubbery okay so  once that's you know just stick nicely   this we could put anywhere but  i would probably put it there well what we haven't done before we go out is   we you get in the kit some glue lined heat shrink  to do your loops but we don't know if we want to   shorten or lengthen i don't know so i'm just going  to create the loop now with a little bit of tape on 20 meters is a bigger fallback isn't  it did you ask lucky to go and check   i think it's six centimeters  but i thought it was 20 on there the user guide thing yeah red orange   dollar chart the foldback was six  centimeters i've just put a bit of tape here   eventually look at some glue-lined heat shrink  that's 10 meters i'm making a 20 meter element this is it here and 20 meter element that's a 20 centimeter which  is about eight inches but it's all on the chart   okay what we'll do we'll take everything  outside now rope it together we will need   some shock cord some clips some cutters which i'm going to give the cutters  to tom so we'll just uh got a checklist going   tom's got the elements radials are down here  we've got little spreaders we've got a backup   analyzer we'll need the pole obviously  as well to hold the elements in place   right it's cold and windy outside so i think  what we should do is do is cue some music so so   dominique okay fox 4 hotel uh hotel  london london dominique yeah okay 10   watts both ways lovely 57 south of france  very good at qdhs near birmingham over echo delta hello this is a mica zero x-ray x-ray yes okay ed as i said just well 13  watts on the radio about 10 watts on   on the uh on the um antenna and we're halfway  between birmingham and coventry yeah dover we're taking the expedition back down now it's  all working fine when are you off um going up   to scotland on the 26th of february tom's gonna  try and call in you know i know 11 o'clock 12   o'clock whatever he's got cell phone curry  coverage so we'll be able to fix up a scared   you'll be able to talk to him as well he's got  a little camera like the one i'm holding now so   he's going to take some footage when he  comes back we'll edit it all together   and we'll show you tom's trip all right tommy  uh all the best we tried 10 watts we got that   working yeah swi was fine good man all right  i'll see you next week i hope you've enjoyed   this i mean it works and everything else the  next video is coming up here in the meantime   have a great time remember to enjoy your radio  have a jolly good fun all right bye for now you
