College of Business here at the University of Oklahoma it's my pleasure to welcome our graduates their family members and their friends here to the Michael f price College of Business fall 2022 convocation ceremony at the University of Oklahoma now I emphasize the University of Oklahoma because it's highlighted in my script I have a Post-It note up here because very recently I was in an event some of you may have been there where I welcomed everybody to the University of Washington now you might be wondering why did you welcome people to the University of Washington while I started my academic career there some 20 something years ago at UW and I don't know I had a senior moment and I could feel the word Washington come across my lips and I knew it was wrong but I have to tell you there's nothing like welcoming people to the University of Washington and half the audience shouting at you Oklahoma just is a nice reminder so welcome to the University of Oklahoma everyone so to the class of 2022 I want to say from everybody up here and myself congratulations you made it [Applause] so before we get started with the evening's program I'd like to point out that we've gone digital with our convocation program this year so please take a moment to scan the QR code that's either on your your flyer that was on your seat or on a sign in front of you in your seat uh that way you can follow along with the program tonight which should be pretty efficient if our first show is any indicator you can also request a printed copy of the program as a Keepsake information on how you can go about doing this in terms of a printed version is included in the electronic program and is going to be emailed to your graduates here early this week now with that bit of housekeeping out of the way I'd like to begin the program for the evening the national anthem this evening is going to be performed by Emily Dirks who is a double major in vocal music education and vocal performance in the weitzenhoffer family college of fine arts and is all herself a soon-to-be graduating senior so Emily would you please join us at the podium [Applause] [Music] twilight's last gleaming whose [Music] some of them [Music] foreign I don't know about you but every time I hear her sing that I have to reserve the temptation to say play ball but all avoid that tonight so thank you very much person's effort I am thrilled to see so many family members and friends that have joined us tonight with these graduates because you've supported your graduates throughout their time here at OU this is also your day to celebrate their achievements graduates please join me in giving your families and friends a big and well-deserved Round of Applause I'd like to take a moment to reflect on this class that's with us tonight they make my colleagues and me incredibly proud while some of your OU Journeys may have started later a lot of you know price College before and after the covid pandemic began and while I arrived at OU early in the days of the pandemic nothing about this place has been diminished or watered down as a result of this and that's largely because of you you kept pushing you kept showing up to classes whether they were on Zoom or in person you kept showing up to your clubs and your organizations because you knew how they important they were to you you kept meeting with your advisors and professors because pandemic or not you were going to find a way to continue thriving you are what makes price College special and gives me confidence in our future one of the best parts about being a Dean is the Fountain of Youth that awaits me every day at work and the energy and commitment our students bring to learning there's an old joke that faculty members tell usually when they're facing their class for the first time and it goes something like this I keep getting older you stay the same age now I know it's not a very good joke but it's true because we keep getting older as faculty members and we get the great benefit every year of seeing a new group of 18 to 22 year olds a new group of people in their late 20s 30s 40s in our master's programs so it literally is a fountain of youth for all of us I've watched price students launch and run their own businesses successfully compete in National academic competitions present groundbreaking ideas to c-suite Executives from National companies plan and Lead meetings and conferences for local Business Leaders the list goes on and on if you ever want to feel inadequate how you spent your time in college I encourage you to sit down with a group of these graduates here and let them share their OU experiences with you if you're anything like me you'll be absolutely amazed and impressed from what you hear and also if you're like me you'll feel like a total slacker from when you were an undergraduate or a graduate student our students are setting a standard that has attracted more High Caliber Learners and thinkers to price College making us the fastest growing college at the University of Oklahoma we're bucking the national Trend while enrollments in higher education across the United States are declining price College enrollments have grown nearly 30 percent in the last five years your incredible work as graduates is the reason that price College recently Rose to number 64 in the national rankings for undergraduate business programs in the United States as well as being ranked a total of 23 times by 12 different National Publications in the past year alone our accomplishments are a testament to your efforts before I close I have a single request that I'd like to make of our graduates as many of you know our College's namesake and major benefactor Michael f price recently passed away last month in early may we celebrated His Life and Legacy in a ceremony just inside Dodson Courtyard next to price Hall this was an incredibly uplifting event held right outside as I just mentioned price Hall more than a hundred guests from across the country joined us 10 of Michael's family members were here friends that graduated with Michael back in the early 1970s were here and many of his former colleagues were here as well back to Michael who came to the University of Oklahoma from Long Island New York we don't get a lot of students from Long Island New York because he saw an incredible opportunity and that opportunity was OU football true story Michael came because Michael had become a die-hard OU Sooner football fan growing up in Long Island and had the desire to play for the Sooners unfortunately that didn't transpire but what he did do was in 1973 he graduated with a bachelor's degree business administration obviously from the College of Business and he promptly returned to New York where he launched what would turn out to be an incredibly productive career in finance however he never forgot where he started here at the University of Oklahoma OU and the college that would eventually bear his name had made a profound and lasting impact on him Michael loved OU and its business college and he wanted better for both he pushed us he motivated us and through his immense generosity he has allowed us to be better so here's my request graduates as you go out into the world I encourage you to be like Mike find something you love outside of your family and career a Cause an organization a movement and help make it better because we aren't the college we are today without the help of Michael f price we aren't in a position we're in today without the support of people who see the value in giving not just with money but with their time and their talent to build a better future for something bigger than themselves class of 2022 in all honesty I am inspired by you I know your time in college wasn't at all what many of you expected I know the tremendous sacrifice and effort that you made to get here today you stared adversity in the face and you kept pushing forward and you made it we couldn't be prouder of all of what you've done and all the success that awaits you and here shortly we will have the privilege of calling you price College alums like we say around here there's only one Oklahoma and there's only one of each of you and I can't thank you enough for making price College part of your life's journey now as we prepare to recognize our graduates I would like to take a moment to acknowledge three notable groups that are with us tonight first are the families with multiple Generations of OU alums the legacy of sending
