[Music] oh [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] my [Music] i [Music] though [Music] is [Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] hold up a mirror to the city of los angeles and what is reflected a place where innovation thrives where opportunity abounds and intellect expands where creativity produces new visions where compassion heals where science and technology drive progress hold up a mirror to the city and what is reflected a place that embraces all people where we transform lives with each step up the ladder of prosperity [Music] where we energize communities where we reinvigorate our region and shape the future of our city our state and our nation hold up a mirror to the city and what do you see cal state l.a we are la join us as we soar to greater heights cal state l.a ranked number one in the nation for upward mobility [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome to the california state university los angeles commencement ceremony for the college of business and economics will the class of 2021 please rise to be acknowledged by your family and friends [Applause] now will everyone please rise for the national anthem please turn your attention to the screen the national anthem will be performed by the cal state la graduate choral ensemble and will be conducted by melissa aguilar gray [Music] oh [Music] i [Music] my [Music] foreign [Music] is [Music] is [Music] was [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] oh [Applause] please be seated now please welcome to the stage the president of california state university los angeles william a covino good afternoon class of 2021. congratulations give yourselves a round of applause and welcome home welcome home we haven't seen each other for a while uh and it's it's it's terrific to have you back here on campus to have your families and friends here with us uh it's a it's a great day for us all to share in this celebration i want to also say hello and have have them say hello to you the dean of the college of business and economics ty jackson and the dean of our library which is getting ready to re-open carlos rodriguez and they're sitting back there so they can wave to us i think they're there yeah okay our two deans are here overseeing the festivities and you know all that thank you to all of the university staff faculty students volunteers who helped organize this big deal this is a very big deal all those people with the white hats and the white shirts that you see around they've been working for days and days and days and days and weeks and weeks to pull this all together so that we could all celebrate with you and have a very special commencement experience i also want to acknowledge those graduates who could not be here today and who are watching via live stream wherever you are in the world right now you're a part of this celebration as well so congratulations to all of you here and everywhere else you all know that earning a cal state la degree is a life-changing achievement with your degree comes a unique identity you are a university graduate and you are forever a cal state l.a golden eagle as a cal state la golden eagle you are powerful you are brave you are tenacious you're resilient you're resourceful you're innovative you know the value of service to others class of 2021 that is who you are and we need you now more than ever and we know that during the pandemic you illustrated what it means to be a cal state la golden eagle life changed quickly and you had to adapt to it just as quickly and it wasn't easy i speak for everyone within our reach in the cal state l.a
community and beyond to say that we're very very proud of you and uh proud of the success that you've achieved during this very difficult period you didn't give up your dream of earning a university degree you continued studying learning serving others caring for your family striving toward your goals in spite of every challenge that the pandemic caused and it did cause any number of really strenuous challenges even as the world around you seemed to be falling apart you worked and prepared to create a better world and it's this foresight this focus on a better world is what is uh this focus is what it means to be a cal state la golden eagle it allows us to see beyond the illusion that gains power when these challenges add up and seem overwhelming they become overwhelming and we get the feeling that they cannot be solved that the world has changed that the world has changed for the worse homelessness injustice inequity disease it seems sometimes like that's just the way it is that nothing will ever change but golden eagles soar above the commonplace golden eagles have a view of the future in which the world is suffused with social justice in which we have defeated so many of the challenges that we see today golden eagles are a force for good in a world that desperately needs goodness you are uniquely equipped to serve and lift up our community you have super powers care for one another is your superpower compassion in the face of suffering is your superpower knowledge and skill to make a difference is your super power someone told me that you guys are better than loki uh and i didn't even know who that was until all the superheroes were explained to me marvel has the avengers but we have you the golden eagles you are the superheroes that the world needs now now every superhero has an origin story your story includes the family and friends who are surrounding you today those loved ones and mentors and partners and helpers who supported you on this journey who kept you going when times became tough who kept you believing that you could achieve this moment even when you wanted to give up they sacrificed so that you could continue moving forward so yes this is your moment golden eagles but it also belongs to those whose love and support helped you achieve this goal in that spirit as i look around i'd like to ask all of the parents of our graduates to please stand and let us thank you all the parents mothers and fathers there you are all right stay standing stay standing and let's have all the grandparents who can join us stand as well if you're able the grandparents the aunts and uncles the sisters and brothers the nieces and nephews the spouses and partners and children and all the friends of the class of 2021 [Applause] thank you so much thank you so much your support has in so many ways helped to make this day possible for your graduate the class of 2021 also includes military veterans who have served our nation with valor who have returned to earn a university degree and along with our veterans many of our active service and reserve uh military colleagues have been a great help to cal state l.a recently you were maybe part of the big mega vaccine center we here at had here at cal state la that was staffed almost entirely with active service military and reserves and they without them we could not have delivered half a million doses of covid vaccine to you and your families and the community so our our military colleagues do great good in scenes like this and all around the world and a number of them are graduates of cal state l.a past present and future i'd like to ask any of our graduates today who are veterans and anyone among our family and friends who is a veteran to please stand and let us congratulate you any veterans there we are there we are all right all right thank you very much thank you for your service so graduates this is the day right this is an unforgettable chapter in the story of your life and you get to write the future chapters and as you write those chapters i hope that you'll never forget the faculty staff and fellow students who were part of your journey that you'll never forget the lessons you learned during your time here that you'll never forget your own bravery power tenacity and expertise no one can take these from you they will serve you well in the years ahead wherever you go in life remember you are a golden eagle and you will soar congratulations the university grants the baccalaureate degree with latin designations summa laude magna laude or laude two students who maintain an outstanding academic record while earning their degrees these students wear gold braids draped on their black gowns to mark their outstanding academic
