Amex Business Platinum Review 2021: Is It the Best Business Card?

Show Video

what's up everybody logan alec here with another card review today i'm taking a look at the business platinum card from american express some of you may have seen my recent review of the american express platinum card that's the consumer version of this card link to my review of that card it's at the top of the screen and in the description below the business platinum card comes with some of the same features as the consumer version but it also offers employee cards and some other features specifically for business owners i actually just got my new business platinum card myself earlier this month so i was obviously excited to get it and to share with you my thoughts on it what i like about it what i don't like so much about it hence this video as usual this review video is going to be broken up into a three parts first i'm going to go over the basic features of the american express business platinum the rewards the fees etc then i'll focus on a few specific pros and cons and finally i'll go through some examples of kinds of people and situations where i think this card would be a good fit along with some examples of kinds of people and situations where i might lean toward getting another business card of course i'm gonna give you my real impressions and thoughts hopefully i can clear up any questions you might have about this card and if you are interested in the business platinum then i would really appreciate it if you use my affiliate link in the description below if you use my link and you're approved for the card the channel will get a small commission that will come at no extra cost to you but will help support me and the channel so i can continue creating content like this for all of you let's get right into it first i want to mention that this card does come with a pretty hefty annual fee 595 dollars and on top of that each additional business platinum card you get say employee cards is going to run you an additional 300 each there are also fees of 39 dollars for both returned and late payments although your late payment fee will switch to 2.99 of your past due balance if that amount is greater than 39 with that being said there is no foreign transaction fee with this card so you and your employees can take it abroad and continue to spend money and earn rewards without having to worry about any extra charges like most other cars from american express the business platinum provides rewards on spending in the form of points called membership rewards points that can be redeemed for other rewards and i'll get into those redemption options in a second but in terms of earning points on everyday spending when you use your business platinum card you'll get five points for each dollar you spend on flights and prepaid hotel reservations that's a great perk but the trick is you have to book those arrangements through amextravel.com or you won't get five points per dollar spent you'll only get one so the bonus rate doesn't apply to anything other than flights or prepaid hotels booked through amextravel.com you'll also get 1.5 points for each dollar you spend on purchases of 5 000 or more and finally one point for each dollar you spend on everything else so basically when you make a purchase of at least five thousand dollars you'll get an extra half point per dollar spent on that specific purchase that benefit is limited to a total of one million extra points per year one extra half point per dollar spent that means you'd have to spend two million dollars per year just on purchases of five thousand dollars or more to max this benefit out in terms of a welcome offer the amex business platinum is giving new card holders 100 000 bonus points right now when they spend at least fifteen thousand dollars on their business platinum card in the first three months after opening it this is one of the better introductory offers right now you can get on either a personal or a business card but right off the bat i want to point out that not every business can obviously muster up fifteen thousand dollars of credit card eligible expenses in a three-month period right i'll talk more about this later but this speaks to one thing you need to know about the annex business platinum and that it's it's really for larger businesses not large businesses like big corporations but at least businesses that do you know maybe have some employees they might have some larger travel expenses if you're a very small business like a one-man one-woman show and you have really high margins right because you don't have any employees or contractors you basically maybe just do consulting from your laptop or something like that i wouldn't want to be tempted to get this card and try to rack up fifteen thousand dollars of expenses in the next three months just to get that sign up bonus there are other business cards that could be much more appropriate for a smaller more lean operation one example is the capital one spark cash for business that gives you unlimited two percent cash back on every purchase that card is currently offering a one-time 500 welcome offer if you spend at least forty five hundred dollars on the card in the first three months the link to that card is in the description below as well there's also a travel version of that card called the capital one spark miles for business link to that card is in the description too but back to the amex business platinum along with points this card also comes with some additional perks you might not use every single perk every month or even every year but overall there's a lot of value in these benefits first you can get a 100 statement credit to cover purchases at dell every six months you can't stack those credits or anything like that kind of use it or lose it so you'll have one 100 credit you have to spend between january and june and another 100 credit you have to spend between july and december there's a similar program for something called clear that uses biometrics like eye scanning fingerprinting to give you a touchless id for admission to select airports and stadiums uh this clear product is available in major airports and stadiums in around 30 cities around the united states so it's a nice thing to have particularly if you're frequently flying out of the participating major airport the full price of a clear subscription is 179 per year you might be able to get it for less than that but when you charge that fee to your business platinum card it will automatically be covered by the annual statement credit american express will also cover the cost of applying or renewing your membership with global entry which cost 100 or tsa pre-check which costs 85 those statement credits are available every four years for global entry or every uh 4.5 years for tsa pre-check that gives you enough time to renew before your membership lapses so as long as you keep your business platinum open you want to pay for global entry or tsa precheck unless they change the terms here business platinum also comes with an annual 200 credit to cover incidental airline expenses these are things like drinks check black check bags in-flight wi-fi whatever but those will only work at one specific airline that you choose at the beginning of each year on the american express website and it's important to know that like i said this credit is only for incidental expenses it doesn't count toward the price of your tickets themselves so obviously this will be most easy to use if you mostly fly with one particular airline but even if you can't take advantage of it every time you can just pick an airline you know you'll use here and there and still get a lot of money back over the course of an average year if you're a frequent flyer before i move on to the business platinum's other features i want to quickly explain how american express membership rewards points work some of you may already be familiar with the system but it can be a little confusing in determining exactly how much each one is worth so i want to make it clear to you how much these points will actually be worth for you when you redeem them for rewards if you just want to use your amex points for a statement credit uh there were six tenths of a cent each for each point you redeem in other words that works out to a 60 credit for 10 thousand points which means you can get a credit for six hundred dollars through the welcome offer if you get those one hundred thousand bonus points you can also spend your points on gift cards or use them at checkout with specific brands and in general you'll get between 70 and one hundred dollars for each ten thousand points you redeem in these ways the specific redemption value varies depending on the brand for example amazon best buy and walmart will give you seventy dollars per ten thousand points but other places like william sonoma bed bath and beyond an old navy will give you a full hundred dollars per ten thousand points which comes out to a penny per point so obviously you wanna look for a brand that offers the best exchange rate on those points but even at seventy dollars per ten thousand points that's more efficient than the statement credit which would only give you value of 60 beyond that you can use your points to book travel arrangements like cruises rental cars hotels etc most of those options are going to come with the same 70 per ten thousand points but you can also get a hundred dollars when you book a flight upgrade an existing flight or make a reservation with one of the amex fine hotels and resorts partners but remember you have to do those through american express travel and any business platinum booking at those fine hotels and resorts will come with perks like late checkout daily breakfast room upgrades and credits to spend at the hotel they say the average value of those perks is 550 for a two-night stay i don't know if that really represents the typical experience but it's still a nice benefit uh you'll get from this card there's also a special bonus 35 percent back when you use your points to pay for flights well certain flights so let's say you spend 20 000 points on a flight 35 percent of twenty thousand dollars or seven thousand dollars so you get seven thousand new points back in your account after making that booking however this perk is only available for first class and business class flights as well as economy flights with the one specific airline that you'd have to choose so you do have to be careful about how you use your points in order to maximize the overall value there this benefit is also limited to a total 000 extra points per year you would have to spend just a little over 1.4 million

points in a single calendar year on qualifying flights to pass that threshold finally the last way to redeem your membership points is to transfer them to another rewards account here's a list of supportive partners most of these will let you transfer points at a one to one ratio but a few are adjusted to fit the value of the points or miles on a particular rewards platform so here's the full list i'll read them out now air lingus era mexico club air canada aeroplan air france klm flying blue al italia a a mileage club avianca british airways cathay pacific asia miles delta sky miles emirates skywards etihad guest hawaiian airlines iberia plus jetblue true blue contest loyalty singapore airlines chris flyer and virgin atlantic and the three hotel partners her choice privileges hilton honors and marriott bonvoy like the regular platinum card this is one area where the business platinum really really shines if you use any of these programs frequently you can use your business platinum card to generate extra points or extra miles and take advantage of whatever redemption opportunities that are being offered at that time with that particular travel partner you will also get automatic enrollment into hilton honors gold as well as marriott bon voy gold plus memberships with avis hertz and national rental cars without having to pay or meet any other requirements so you'll get extra perks like additional points free nights and room upgrades just by getting a business platinum card and requesting access to those programs another perk that's really helpful for frequent travelers is automatic access to airport lounges and the american express collection along with partner lounges like deltas overall the business platinum unlocks over 1300 lounges in more than 140 countries so there might be some gaps depending on where you're traveling but you should be able to find a lounge at most destinations and before i move on i just want to mention one last travel benefit personally i don't think i'm ever going to use this but american express actually offers discounts and credits for private jets with wheels up again private jets and all this might not be relevant for most of you watching but hey for all you billionaires out there you could save some money on those private jet bookings finally another perk that's really helpful are the insurance and coverage policies that come with the business platinum some of these are better than others but overall i think they're pretty robust and you'll appreciate having them if you're a frequent traveler trip cancellation trip delay and cell phone coverage are available through a third-party insurance provider called new hampshire insurance company while the others are underwritten by amex assurance now i don't have any personal experience with these insurance programs i've never filed a claim through american express so i can't quite speak to that process or how easy it is to get compensation if anyone watching does have that experience it would be great if you could leave a comment to let me know way down there under this video let me know and let everyone else know what that process was like and how simple or complicated it was to make a claim and get your money but i want to mention that you will usually only be able to file a claim if you use your business platinum card to make the relevant purchase so for example you won't be able to file a baggage insurance claim if you book the flight with another card there are quite a few uh policies here and obviously a lot of fine print so let me go through a little bit at a high level here these policies before i start talking about the employee cards and expense management options first off business platinum card holders get automatic loss and damage insurance when they reserve a rental car now this doesn't include liability coverage but it will cover you for theft injury death etc keep in mind you have to pay for the booking with your business platinum card you have to put your name on the rental agreement and you have to decline the rental car company's collision coverage in order to be eligible for any insurance through your card also when you book transportation with your business platinum card you will also have access to baggage insurance with up to two thousand dollars in coverage for check bags specifically and three thousand dollars in coverage for the entire trip again there are some exclusions and restrictions with this policy for example there is a maximum of a thousand dollars in coverage for high risk items like jewelry or computers which personally limits the upside for me since those are the kinds of items particularly my laptop right that i would need the most coverage for but regardless it should kick in as long as the situation was mostly out of your control and they should pay the replacement value for your stuff up to those limits the next insurance policy is for trip delays so if you have a round-trip flight that's delayed for more than six hours then you may be able to get money for things like necessities like food toiletries medications lodging right if you're delayed overnight this benefit is limited to 500 per claim and no more than two claims in any given 12-month period obviously all these policies have a lot of exclusions and fine print but if you book with your business platinum and you're delayed for some reason out of your control i don't think you should have trouble getting them to cover any necessary expenses there's also similar coverage for round trips that are either cancelled or interrupted for a covered reason they'll pay for any missed travel arrangements uh any transportation you need to get back home etc the limits are much higher for this one you can get up to ten thousand dollars back per trip and twenty thousand dollars total per year and there are separate limits for cancellation and interruption which suggests that you could end up with an annual maximum of forty thousand dollars another nice perk is the cell phone protection policy this will cover you for up to eight hundred dollars per claim if your phone is stolen or damaged as long as you pay the wireless bill with your business platinum you will have to pay a 50 deductible for each successful claim so it's not going to cover everything but still it's a lot better than being out you know an iphone 12 or something and having to drop you know 800 close to a thousand dollars on a replacement phone and you can actually claim this twice in each 12-month period so you don't really have to worry about this unless you manage to damage your phone or your phone get you you have a phone stolen three times in one year uh there's no coverage for loss no coverage or cracking your screen or anything like that there's also no coverage for abuse which is a little unclear uh so i don't know if they would consider dropping your phone to be abused or what exactly would count as an eligible claim but unless you do something completely reckless you should have the money for a new phone if you break your current one or someone steals it on top of that amex also provides warranty and purchase protection for general spending the warranty policy will extend most manufacturers warranties of five years or less by one additional year so if you buy something with your business platinum that comes with say a three year warranty uh that fourth year will be covered through amex assurance and that's not a a new warranty from amex or simply extending the manufacturer's warranty with the original terms so whatever coverage was available available from the manufacturer right will be identical to your amex coverage and the purchase protection plan covers you for up to ten thousand dollars per item and 50 000 per year when a new item is lost stolen or damaged within 90 days of making the purchase so again you might not use all or even most of the business platinum insurance policies in a typical typical year but when you're running a company right over time it's nice to know that you have all this coverage available in case something goes wrong okay that covers all the rewards that come with the business platinum you might also be wondering about some of the expense and team management tools so i'm going to quickly explain how that works as a small business owner or manager then i'll move on to the pros and cons of the amex business platinum remember each business platinum you need for your employees is going to run you 300 per year so that might not be worth the investment if you don't expect your employees to charge much to your account right but american express does allow managers to track account activity through online statements as well as the amex mobile app you can easily configure account alerts to let you know about any suspicious or unusual activity you can actually link your card directly to quickbooks so that new purchases will be automatically categorized in real time without having to input them manually and if you don't want to oversee all that yourself you can also designate someone as the account manager which allows them to do things like make payments uh dispute charges etc without actually taking over ownership of the account so again i haven't used this system personally please leave a comment if you have experience with american express employee cards but there are some tools to help you manage those employee accounts more efficiently all right before we discuss the kinds of people and situations the american express business platinum would probably be a good fit for as well as the kinds of people and situations this card might not be the best fit for let me quickly go over the pros and cons of the american express business platinum card i'll start with the pros for number one is the outstanding travel reward structure first off you get five points back for each dollar you spend in the categories of flights and hotels as long as you make the reservations through amextravel.com now that is obviously somewhat limited uh you won't get that bonus rate on things like airbnbs trains taxis or other forms of travel but if you're mostly flying and staying at hotels you can get a lot of points back with an amix business platinum and remember you can get additional employee cards added to your account for 300 uh each per year it's roughly you know roughly half the the overall annual fee so you can earn even more rewards by letting your employees book their own travel arrangements using your business platinum account on top of that you'll also get two hundred dollars in covered airline fees access to airport lounges around the world a free application to pre-check or global entry periodically premium memberships with hotel and rental car companies special perks at destinations in the fine hotels and resorts collection etc so yes uh this card it's it's expensive it's it's not for everyone or for every business but you really do uh get a lot for your money when you consider all the travel perks to come with the business platinum the trick is to take advantage of them all right or at least most of them for number two is really robust insurance and purchase protection i went over just moments ago there are a lot of cars that might come with a few types of that coverage but not many offer as much as you get with the business platinum just to reiterate this card comes with policies for trip delays trip cancellations and interruptions car rental theft and damage baggage loss uh damage uh baggage theft right baggage damage cell phone protection purchase protection and extended manufacturer's warranties as i said earlier each of those have various exclusions restrictions limitations etc there's a lot of fine print like there is with any insurance policy but you should be able to rely on your business platinum card in most situations where something goes wrong in one of those areas for a reason that was mostly or fully out of your control so obviously you hope that you don't have to file any claims but anyone who's lived life long enough knows that sometimes bad stuff happens right and if you run into an issue it's nice to have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that you're covered finally number three is all the ways you can redeem your amex membership points now some of those options are a little underwhelming right you don't want to redeem for a statement credit and only get six tenths of a cent per point right sixty dollars for each set of ten thousand points but if you're smart about how you redeem or amex membership rewards points then you should be able to get at least a penny per point each simplest way to do that is probably to redeem your points for a flight that comes with an exchange rate of 100 per 10 000 points you'll also get back 35 percent of the points you spend when you book either a first or business class ticket or a regular ticket with your selected airline so let's say you spend a combined twenty thousand dollars on flights and hotels per year with your business platinum you get five points per dollar on that spending and those hundred thousand points will turn into one thousand three hundred fifty dollars if you redeem them for flights and then get the thirty five percent bonus you can even continue to roll that bonus into more and more points thirty five percent of the original hundred thousand will be thirty five thousand thirty five percent of thirty five thousand is twelve thousand two hundred fifty and so on and if you'd rather not use your points to book through american express remember you can also transfer them over to one of the third party rewards programs here they are on the screen again so depending on what programs you use and what benefits they're offering you could get an even better return than what's available through american express yes the point system can be a little confusing there are a lot of different ways to redeem them but you can get an excellent value for your points once you start to understand how it works and where the best deals are at this point i want to put my cpa hat on and just mention one thing really quickly sometimes if you have a take a business trip it's better to actually just pay for that business trip with a credit card or from your bank account okay rather than points because if you pay with with your credit card or with your bank account you can get a tax deduction for that business trip assuming it is actually a bona fide business trip however if you pay in points you won't necessarily well you won't get a tax deduction for that trip okay so one strategy here is maybe you know pay for all your business travel uh you know with with the american express business platinum right but then save those points and use the points on non-business trips that you couldn't get a tax deduction for anyway and finally pro number four the amex business platinum is that sweet hundred thousand point welcome offer they have right now of course to get that you must spend at least fifteen thousand dollars on the card in the first three months of having it to qualify for that offer this is a pretty lucrative offer as mentioned previously one hundred thousand membership rewards points can be uh worth up to a thousand dollars on the amex platform itself if you redeem uh for flights or flight upgrades to american express travel or if you redeem uh for gift cards that do in fact give you a penny per point valuation on your amex points and these hundred thousand points can be worth even more when transferred to an airline or hotel partner but you really have to do the math to make sure the transfer works in your favor make sure you're getting more than a penny per point value by transferring all right let's move on to the cons of the business platinum con number one is the high annual fee as i've said you get a uh pretty expansive feature list for the money but the business platinum is on the price the end at 595 dollars per year and 300 for each additional card so ultimately that value is going to come down to how much you spend and how much you can take advantage of all the benefits that come with this card i can't say whether or not it's worth the money for your specific business uh but i will say that if you're kind of on the fence you're not sure you think the annex business platinum is a stretch there are a lot of cheaper lower annual fee cards available for small businesses okay i have links to plenty of those cards in the description below for you to check out right they got the capital one line uh the chase line amex even has some that are that are more appropriate uh for a much smaller business so check out all the cards in the description below if you're not completely sold on the amex business platinum at this point con number two is a relatively low rewards rate outside the bonus categories obviously it's great to get five points per dollar on flights and hotels booked through amex but on the other hand you'll only get one point per dollar on everything else aside from purchases of five thousand dollars or more which will give you 1.5 points per dollar spent now these aren't necessarily bad deals one point per dollar is still better than nothing but it is a little underwhelming for such a premium card and it might limit how much you actually end up using your business platinum you might even want to pair this card uh with another business card that offers better rewards rates in the non-bonus spending categories again links to all those cards in the description below finally con number three is how complicated some of the rewards are to figure out personally i don't think it's that bad once you kind of get used to the amex framework but there is a lot to learn with this card and with amex rewards in general the first issue is figuring out all the different options you have for redeeming your points what value you're going to get per point for each of those and whether you'd be better off transferring your amex points to a travel partner or redeeming them within the amex system itself beyond that there are also summer rewards that you need to use at specific times for example you can get up to 200 in dell credits per year but that's broken up into 100 for the first half of the year and 100 for the last half of the year right so you have to make two separate purchases of at least 100 each in order to maximize this credit similarly the 200 airline credit is a nice perk to have but it only works with the one airline that you pick at the beginning of the year and that has to be the same airline that you select for a 35 bonus on flights well certain flights booked with points so this isn't to say that these aren't good rewards as i said there's a lot of value among all of them but there's also a bit of a learning curve that can make it a little complicated maybe a little overwhelming to really make use of them the first time all right before i wrap up this review i want to get into a few situations where i think this card is a good fit along with some situations and kinds of people where i might recommend going in another direction in terms of a business card first i would say the business platinum makes a lot of sense for big spenders particularly big travel spenders who are booking lots of flights in hotels five points per dollar is a pretty outstanding rate when it comes to hotels and flights reserved through mxtravel.com especially when you take into account that you can get 35 percent of your points back when you use them to book business or first class tickets through american express travel or even economy tickets as long as they're with the same airline you chose for your 200 airline incidental fee credit on the other hand if you only book a handful of flights per year you only travel maybe a few weeks in the average year then you might not have enough spending to take full advantage of these rewards quite frankly so in general i would say the more you spend on flights and hotels obviously the more useful rewards you'll get out of the business platinum and the easier it will be for you to make up the cost of the annual fee throughout the year second situation that fits the business platinum is for people who have accounts of one of the travel rewards programs now you might get into one of these programs later on when you're planning a trip or booking a trip i wouldn't say you need to have one of these accounts already for this card uh to be worth the investment but it might be easier if you already have an airline or hotel account set up and you can just plug your points directly into that program now one thing i've seen with a lot of these programs is that they often have their own rewards credit cards for example you can get the delta sky miles business card if you're a frequent flyer with delta right so people who tend to fly with a specific airline often apply for those cars to get even more miles but the truth is in a lot of cases you'll be better off with an amex business platinum and just transferring your membership points over to delta or whatever other airline or hotel program you're using that delta sky miles business card for example only gives you two miles for every dollar you spend on delta flights well if your business platinum card you get five points per dollar you spend on the same flights if you book through amextravel.com and then you just move your points over to delta at a one-to-one ratio and spend those points over on delta now one thing you gotta do right is compare the prices on amextravel.com to what you would pay directly you know to delta or some other airline or whatever you might need to check a few travel sites to make sure you're still getting a good deal to amextravel.com

and you're not overpaying but if you go through a lot of miles or hotel points with any of these brands the business platinum can be a great way to generate even more rewards than you would get with one of those airline or hotel credit cards in general your mileage may vary depending on the specific card finally the third situation was the business platinum would be a good fit is for companies that do business internationally some cars do come with a foreign transaction fee or limit certain rewards to us only spending but your business platinum will let you continue to earn rewards while abroad without having to pay extra for those foreign transactions so if you're booking a lot of international flights and hotels then you can charge those to your amex and keep getting five points for every dollar you spend which makes this a great option for companies that do a lot of international traveling all right with that being said the amex business platinum isn't for everyone uh now i'm going to talk about some kinds of people or situations you might be better off with another business card first as i said previously this is an outstanding card for big spenders businesses that spend a lot of money well the other side of that is that is probably not a great value if you have a smaller business very high margin business which is great right but you also don't spend as much money um and maybe you don't spend very much on flights in hotels obviously five points per dollar in those categories is still good value that's effectively five percent back right if not even more when you use the points to book uh your travel partners right any redeemer point smart but it's still not going to add up to much unless you're spending a lot of money so let's say you only spend five thousand dollars per year on flights and hotels for your business that means you'll generate 25 000 points in those categories over the entire year sure it's a decent return but it's not even close to enough to cover the annual fee that's not to say there aren't good reasons to get a business platinum other than that again it comes with a lot of perks beyond just the points earned on your spending but you're going to get a lot more out of this card if you tend to spend more money in those bonus categories the second situation where i probably point you in another direction is if you're a frequent flyer with an airline that isn't currently a travel partner with american express overall american express when it comes to travel partners has a great selection of airlines particularly international airlines but aside from delton jet blue they don't really have partnerships for people who mostly fly within the united states in terms of airline travel partners so if you typically fly with american united southwest whatever the business platinum might not be the right choice for your business because you'd want a card that can help you earn miles for that specific program of your choice the best option is going to depend on the specific program you have in mind but i would highlight chase's business credit card such as the inc business preferred chase doesn't have quite as many travel partners as american express but it does support both southwest and united which aren't available with any of the american express cards this table shows all the travel partners that are partnering with both american express and chase as well as those that are only supported by one so hopefully this will help you make your decision if you need or want a card through which you can travel points from to a specific airline or hotel rewards program finally the third situation that's probably not a great fit for the business platinum is if you really just want a simple card set up where you can charge all of your business expenses to one business card now that's not necessarily the worst idea with the business platinum you'll still get one point per dollar spent outside the bonus categories 1.5 points for a dollar spent on purchases of 5 000 or more but unfortunately that's not a great return when you consider that you're spending 595 dollars a year just to keep this card open ultimately the business platinum card is designed for travel yes you can use it for other things but personally i would recommend having another card on hand for you to use for expenses that don't fall into one of the two bonus categories of flights and hotels booked through amextravel.com that you get with the business platinum and if you're the kind of person who just wants one go-to card for everything in your business i might recommend a more general card such as the capital one sport cash card which gives you unlimited two percent cash back on all spending there aren't any bonus categories to figure out or anything like that the annual fee is only 95 which is waived for the first year and maybe if your business is travel heavy right you get a card like the amex business platinum to spend on flights and hotels book through amextravel.com rack up points that way
