In the previous program, we talked about AI, artificial intelligence. Other than AI, 5G is also a hot technical application in recent years. But 5G sounds difficult. However, many startup teams have very outstanding performance in terms of 5G application. With the technical assistance of Qualcomm, so we also invited an associate from Qualcomm and three startup teams today.

To share with us the infinite possibility of 5G. Let’s welcome Mack, the senior marketing manager of Qualcomm. Also, there are three outstanding teams from the Qualcomm Innovate in Taiwan Challenge (QITC). We will talk about how innovation in digital transformation has unleashed the unlimited potential of 5G. Shall we first greet our audience? Hello everyone! Hi, my name is Mack. I’m the senior marketing manager of Qualcomm. I am in charge of 5G and related products.

Hello everyone, this is Kristy, the co-founder of Nestech Corporation Ltd. We are responsible for the autonomous management of 5G smart buildings. Hi everyone, I’m Jackal, Senior Vice General Manager, R&D Department of QT Medical. And I am in charge of product development and design. Hello, this is Duncan, the CEO of Yallvend.

Yallvend provides solutions for smart vending machine upgrades. OK, Welcome! We have just listened briefly to what the three teams do. But we are still curious and want to learn more.

So would you please introduce your products and services to us individually? OK, in terms of Nestech, we specialize in commercial Internet of Things. Focusing on the smart buildings and smart lodging. In the future, we seek to move towards the direction of "smart city". What we do is smart environmental sensing technologies. And we’ll integrate biometric identifications in the future, transitioning into complete autonomous management of smart buildings.

Which is equivalent to that we give each building a brain, so that they can make decisions on their own. Then the AI algorithm will offer each building their own patterns. In this case, It’s not human beings who control the machine, but the system will make decisions autonomously. How about QT Medical? OK, QT Medical mainly focuses on the ECG system. We transform the giant ECG machines that we often see in the hospitals into very compact and portable devices.

In addition, we have patented digital patches. The design of these patches will make the use very simple. In the past, you needed a trained operator to affix these patches. But now, anyone can do this at home.

As a result, we bring the 12-lead ECG from the hospital or clinic to your home. Yes, telemedicine is very popular now. So this would make remote medical care more accessible.

So the doctors, like in the U.S, we have a service called “Xpress ECG” The doctor placed an order with our company. We will send the ECG system and patches to the residence of the patient. And the patient can complete a 12-lead ECG test by himself. And then send the results back to the doctor. For diagnosis by the doctor.

So, doctors and patients do not need to meet in person. Yes, and they can just complete a 12-lead ECG diagnosis and interpretation. So this is very suitable for telemedicine. Especially when the pandemic is raging like this now. Telemedicine has become very important.

It means that, when doctors and patients are mired by the epidemic, When the circumstances do not allow in-person doctor's visit, With smart healthcare, telemedicine, and technical assistance, coupled with 5G, a large amount of data can be transmitted quickly, which can deliver outstanding medical outcomes. Alright, how about Duncan? Well, we actually provide a module of the Internet of Things. It can be installed in a vending machine in three minutes. A solution to upgrade traditional vending machines to smart vending machines. After the vending machine is upgraded, it can then quickly support functions such as mobile payment.

We support more than 42 types of mobile payment methods throughout Asia. Another important point is that when the vending machine is connected to the Internet, we can then in fact provide our customers with various sales figures and inventory data accurately. which allows for better decision-making. Last year, due to the pandemic, We let the vending machine identify you and let you know who you are. The Ministry of Health and Welfare and Taipei City Government have completed the application on the mask vending machines.

We currently proposed such solutions in 7 Asian countries. And more than 1,000 vending machines are using our services. So with what the three of you have shared, Whether it is applied in smart cities, smart healthcare, smart retail, or in different sectors. we have witnessed that since last year, we are facing the so-called “new normal”. Digital transformation is extremely important, and it doesn’t wait for you. When it comes to you, you have to face it head on and adapt.

I’d like to ask, Mack, that Qualcomm as the pioneer in 5G, How do you see the 5G development trend in the next 5 years, and what are the market opportunities? Well, I think this is a topic that everyone, in the audience today cares deeply about. In fact, we regard last year as the first year of 5G development. The first thing that people approached might be the promotion of 5G smartphones by the telecom providers.

Such a product began to promote the so-called 5G. According to the latest report of IHS, to a production value of more than 5 or 10 years, It will even reach an amount of 13 trillion U.S. dollars. The number of jobs created by the population may exceed 20 million. So What kind of condition is such data based on? We see that in the post-pandemic era, we find that people may have to be separated from each other, whether it’s medical care, or healthcare, or employment, or communication, which might be done without contact. Under such a premise, in fact, we must rely on a leading advancement in technology. In fact, Qualcomm has always been in such a leading state in terms of 5G technology.

To provide an application for people to get closer to this society. In these 5 years, we’ve seen that 5G is all about high-transmission. Under the premise of low latency and multiple connections. At this current stage, in the past two years, everyone’s main focus is on the improvement of high-transmission. But in the next 3 to 5 years, we will see that Low latency will make 5G differentiate from other generations. This is a cross-disciplinary and cross-generation advancement of communication.

The so-called low latency shall be applied to the remote medical treatment like the one we just mentioned. Suppose you imagine if a person, who is currently in the situation of COVID-19, If he couldn't reach rapid and direct access to the medical resources, How does he access the medical treatment in the manner of remote, without interval? In addition, low latency is actually inseparable from high transmission. So it also involves a characteristic of the so-called millimeter wave. How to combine its large bandwidth with low latency? So Qualcomm has also been committed to the development of millimeter waves. This is also a part that will gradually develop in the next 5 years. Wow! This scenario and case that mentioned by Mack is exactly what QT Medical is doing now.

That's right. Yup, if I don’t feel well and I need a diagnosis of ECG. But the first hospital I go to may be a high-risk place in terms of pandemic. And the second doctor may not have time to see you in-person.

Therefore, the solution like QT Medical is actually very suitable and can be done. But it must be combined with what Mack just said to be capable of high transmission and low latency. Yes, by all means that can actually implement the effect he wants to achieve in telemedicine. Let’s go back to talk about the applications in the retail industry. I think that Yallvend is not only the excellent team of Qualcomm, Last year in our Taiwan Mask National Team, like what Duncan just said.

They made some contribution. In fact, zero contact is in the context of the epidemic, We see that zero contact is also a trend for retail business as well. Including mobile payment, like Japan. In Japan, they are encouraged not to use banknotes. Because paper money is easily infected with viruses, thus everyone is encouraged to use the mobile payment.

This is one thing. Besides facing the pandemic, The transformation of the retail industry includes data like how Duncan just mentioned, how to determine the sales data, etc. This is what Yallvend seeks to do. So Duncan, would you kindly share with us? Which trends can be seized in the digital transformation of the retail industry in the future? And what are the opportunities for startups that want to develop? Well, I will share the digital transformation of the vending machine retail industry that I am more familiar with. In terms of vending machines, it is actually an industry that has been over 30 years. The Internet was not popular in the past, So most of the management is still in the stage of paper copy.

The biggest issue we’ve seen recently, as reported in the media, that the vending machine sector in Japan emphasizes the application of AI. To increase their overall sales volume through AI analysis. Before you start the AI analysis, The most important point is to receive the data. How to calculate AI if there is no data? This is the first pain point for the digital transformation in the vending machine sector.

This is why we launched our solutions. To enable the data of the vending machines to be transmitted to the cloud rapidly. The next step, actually before the sales upgrade. Another big pain point of the transformation of vending machines.

In fact, the vending machine is a certain level of logistics. How to efficiently transport goods and replenish vending machines? It needs to be retrieved from the previous data. And use the data to compute for the optimization of the transportation and replenishment, the accuracy of goods to be replenished.

So by our collection of data, the effects may be strengthened. As a whole, the most important thing of the digital transformation is the data collection, for them to analyze precisely. I’d also like to share that with the transformation of vending machines or conventional industries. The biggest challenge we’ve encountered is not the technology, But the rejection of the frontline workers to the technology. So when we have the background of this technology, we have to consider how to make the user at the first line to accept the new technologies painlessly.

So for this part, we will emphasize on users’ feedback. For them to accept the new technologies painlessly. OK, let’s talk about telemedicine. We know that QT Medical have been approved by FDA in 2019.

Yes. Would you please share with us? In other words, due to QT Medical’s 12-lead ECG, how to use this system to improve the health, or the medical care? OK, we’ve started selling in the U.S. market since 2019 after being approved by the FDA. And we’ve also been approved by TFDA this year and started our sales in the Taiwan market. Besides the sales, we also emphasize on our services, so one service we’ve just mentioned. Last year, due to COVID-19, doctors and patients...I mean, the patients were not allowed to go to hospital. Right, the lockdown was imposed.

Right, but through this remote delivery of medical instrument and measurement, and remote diagnosis, These measurements can be done without in-person meeting between doctors and patients. In the U.S., our services have been adopted by many major hospitals, like Stanford. And they are very satisfied with the outcomes. What we hope for is that in the future, when we have bigger development, We’ll have an AI diagnosis in the cloud, and an assisted interpretation system. Yes, this can help the doctor to have one checkpoint and one method in front, for the doctor to measure how urgent the patient is, And then pass on to the doctor.

For saving medical resources. So along with the development of 5G, for the smart healthcare, we’ll enable all the data. Whether it is ECG or even more medical information, they are all connected to the Internet and collected altogether, for assisting the complete computation for disease. So smart healthcare will be more automatic, smoother... Because we are worried about the crash of medical resources. Yet, through the algorithm, 5G, and AI, (the crash) may be greatly prevented.

I think that in Duncan and Jackal’s sharing, we all see that 5G can help our technical application or technical development, to another level out of the original league. So after we've heard from retail applications and medical applications, Let’s hear from the smart city and disaster prevention. I know Nestech in Taipei, have installed a system named FIND, in the Qualcomm Innovation Center, Taiwan. So Kristy, would you please share with us and introduce what FIND is ? I heard the system can detect the safety parameters of a room.

So what is this function in detail? Why do you wanna apply your technology to such services? Well, the full name of FIND is “Fuzzy Intelligent Detection System” Behind this, there is a model of fuzzy mixed with other algorithms, in which it manifests is actually the sensor. What differentiates us mostly, is that In the past, you needed wiring for these sensors. But we are plug-and-play because it uses wireless technology directly. Just plug it into the socket. Yes, just plug it in. Well, either plug it into the socket, or just leave it as it is, because it is battery embedded.

It can be configured. But the most important thing is what kind of sensors you need to install in each space. What kind of parameter coefficient do you want to sense or adjust? AI comes from labor’s intelligence, We will input parameters for it to learn. After learning, the model is specific to this space. So in fact, it seems that we have installed our equipment in Qualcomm’s R&D center or the three major museums in Taiwan. The equipment detects the parameter in different environments.

Nestech was originally an unmanned front desk management system. With the recent contactless trend, The FIND system will follow our system for direct installation and deployment. That decreases all the costs significantly. What we do is...It’s not that we said that when there was a fire, we started the alarm,

That’s not what we do. We send people to check when the risk parameters reach the level of alarming. Previously, you needed people to check on it. Or you check on it when you hear the wailing of fire-engine sirens. Now these are not the cases.

Now we detect the environment, using system to monitor the environment directly, If the problem is built up, and alarming value increases, We can notify the relevant authorities to check the environment to avoid the disaster. OK, so other than Qualcomm Innovation Center, Taiwan where FIND is actually applied, Kristy also mentioned the museums. Wow, museums do need such systems. Because even if there is a small disaster, It could result in great losses. So other than the museums, in the next 5 years, Are there any opportunities, business opportunities, and needs in the disaster prevention service market? In fact, because we are an unmanned lodging and a management system, When installing FIND, we add some other things, like the millimeter waves which Mack mentioned. We add this to detect such biological features.

The reason for this is when travelers choose to stay in here, what people care about is the quality of living. And hotels and lodging providers, they need their guests to be in healthy condition. Nowadays, everyone needs to register with your real name.

But there were some unexpected accidents. We add some functions. For the administrators of these commercial spaces to ensure the safety of their guests or of their own. OK, the last question I have for Mack, is that 5G, in what everyone shared just now, its application must be more extensive and more important. And as the leader of 5G technologies, Qualcomm have cultivated in Taiwan for more than two decades, What kind of advantages do you think Taiwan has in terms of 5G? And if such advantages are to be maintained, what are the most needed resources? For this question, I’d say it’s very exciting, in the past two or three decades, Taiwan has taken off with technological advancement. Many excellent technical talents are developed, I myself am a technologist.

What excites me is that Taiwan has moved from OEM to self-owned brands. And we’ve seen many, like the guests today, form the startup teams, and this is booming. With the current 5G, What we’ve seen is not the development of transmission applications, like 4G and 3G in the past, It provides different scenarios. Like the transmission rate, or AIoT we’ve just said.

Or so called IoT or V2X. In this regard, all kinds of spaces are for the technicians in Taiwan to develop new innovations. As Qualcomm have cultivated in Taiwan for more than two decades, We’ve always been infused with newly created ideas, to support them behind the scenes. So we have numerous innovation challenges. The purpose is to stimulate more soft power in Taiwan, rather than the hard power in the past.

How to integrate these two, and use Taiwan as a base, to promote the technologies worldwide. Now that the world is slowly undergoing a new transformation and stepping into a new normal. But the application of the technology has to be able to overcome the changes in the environment. I think this is very important. Whether you are attending this session in person or virtually, you'll continue to keep at it.

OK, thank you Mack, and thank you, the three startup teams today. Namely Nestech, QT Medical and Yallvend for sharing with us today. Qualcomm applies the professional technologies in 5G and AI areas to support startup teams continuously.

We look forward to more outstanding teams to be discovered in the future. Thank you everyone online for joining our 5G Mobile Generation, Connection, and Innovative Future Forum. See you next time.
